Xbox's upcoming RPG Avowed is nearing the end of its development, with Obsidian gunning for a February 2025 launch for the Game Pass title. While the team says that optimisation is still underway, and the game's specs won't be 100% finalised until closer to release, it has confirmed that Avowed is aiming for a 30FPS frame rate target on Xbox.
As part of an interview that took place at Gamescom 2024, a member of the Obsidian dev team talked about its frame rate target, and why the team opted to go for 30FPS.
"Performance is one of the last things we figure out, right? Our core target is 30 frames per second bare minimum - that's the expectation. It's a first-person, single-player game; you don't necessarily need that 60 frames - and that allows us to get a lot juicier with the effects, lighting and all this other stuff.
It's a trade-off we opted to make relatively early and we're really happy with that. I mean, the game's running pretty smooth for how visually dense it is, and that was always our goal. As far as a greater understanding of performance spec, we're still figuring all of that out - it's one of the last things you do."
So, for launch at least, it's looking like Avowed will be a 30FPS game on Xbox Series X and S. We've seen other titles launch with this target and then get a high frame rate mode later down the line — Redfall for example — but it doesn't look like this is part of Obsidian's plans with Avowed for now.
If the game is hitting a correctly frame-paced 30FPS we don't think this is too much of an issue to be honest, even if a 60FPS option is always welcome in our book. The rest of the game is sounding pretty fantastic anyway, going off a recent selection of previews that also hit the web during Gamescom week.
How do you feel about this Avowed news? Go ahead and discuss down below.

"you don't necessarily need that 60 frames"
Yeah, sure...
Absolute rubbish no.excuses whatsoever in this day and age every games should have a performance mode as well Microsoft are a joke
I've been looking forward to this for a long while, I think it'll be great. Pretty disappointed it was delayed till next year, particularly as it was just due to scheduling issues.
Cool, no problem, I swear xbox studios are like a different species when you look at sony first party games..another year of lulz I guess *sigh
Redfall - 30fps
Starfield - 30fps
Hellblade 2 - 30fps
Avowed - 30fps
One can't be this dense..
It's a trade-off we opted to make relatively early and we're really happy with that
If we can have a 60fps mode for Starfield I'm sure we’ll get one for Avowed in due course 😉.
I think its down to the Devs to decide whether they would rather have the visual impact or sacrifice that for frame rate. 30fps has NEVER been an issue for many games and the majority of Game of the Year winners are 30fps games on Console - only playable at 60fps once newer/better hardware comes out. The XB1/PS4 era games are '60fps' now on newer hardware...
Many games offering 'Performance' modes aren't often delivering 60fps consistently (if at all) and some even run at XB360-like resolutions (720p internally) that look ugly - especially in motion. FSR3.0 Frame Gen too adds more lag/latency making it feel worse to play than 30fps despite delivering a more 'consistent' 60fps frame rate - so you may get '60fps' but 30fps feels more responsive to play.
Forza Horizon 5 is a fantastic example of 30fps done right - 60fps maybe 'possible' but the trade off in Visuals is to high for what feels like little/no difference in responsiveness.
Ah the pitchforks are already out. Phil shouldn’t have a talked about how important 60 fps is earlier in the generation, honestly. He sort of shot himself in the foot there. I don’t mind 30 fps, myself, but every time it’s announced, people are ready to attack. With the drop off in the amount of released games, I’m almost to the point where I’m glad anything is released!
It’s pretty disappointing that Xbox continues to just put out 30fps games at this point. As someone mentioned above, the last 4 have been 30fps. That shouldn’t be a thing at this point.
While HB2 wasn’t terrible with 30fps it certainly felt clunkier and would have been better at 60fps. HB2 is the ONLY one IMO that could even be argued would be OK at 30fps.
Sometimes 60fps is important and necessary. Sometimes it just makes you lose a lot of visual fidelity only to make things look like your dad hasn't turned off the uncanny Motion Smoothing on big fancy new TV.
Well 💩 I guess I am crossing that one off the looking forward to list. Shame it looked fun.
@Scirius don't give in. You can do it. 👍 😀
(Just a Friday joke, no offense).

Here is the Aaron Greenberg quote from 2020 yet again https://x.com/aarongreenberg/status/1258378640087060481?t=vKIEhu66eorRLDOcP9zDqQ&s=19
"60fps will be the standard output" when talking about series x.
Liar.
So disappointing coming from Obsidian. I hold them in high regard but this just seem like more garbage from Microsoft owned studios. Why have other UE5 games managed to ship with 60fps and Xbox owned studios are struggling and giving this "design choice" malarkey
And, just like that, I lost interest in another Xbox first party title
Because... "More Cinematic" right? That's the dev code word for it these days. Or could it be the discrepancy that as per Microsoft rules it has to be playable in Series S and they prioritized that for that reason.
I sort of expected this. People went into this gen expecting 4k/60 as standard and neither the Series or PS5 are specced to achieve this with new titles.
Will be interesting to see if this remains the case with the PS5 Pro but 30fps is just something I've come to expect with Xbox titles.
The game doesn't look good enough to justify not being 60fps. I'll play it on PC instead (and probably at a much later date on a steeper discount).
You know the 'Fast, good, cheap: pick two' triangle? Well for every game this generation the choice is 'Framerate, resolution, detail: pick two'.
Oh no, this is a huge disappointment for me, I was really expecting 60 fps for this game.
This means I will hold off on playing Avowed until a 60 fps update is in place (which is what I should have done for Starfield…)
Have you learned nothing Jon Obsidian Snow??? Series consoles shall go down in history as home of 30FPS exclusives (title most likely held by PS3 up to this point).
Today's consoles are low-end gaming PCs with a very tight price, they have their advantages and disadvantages, but being a closed and inexpensive hardware that must remain unchanged for several years, power is not one of the advantages. Series X may be the most powerful console on the market, but it does not escape this reality either.
Whoever wants to play at high fps rates needs a PC and to be willing to invest in hardware upgrades over the years.
@EthanMustDie Except there are many PS5 games with 60 fps as an option, which I feel should be on Xbox as well instead of the devs making that choice for us.
Many, @mac_da_man? The PS5 has had very few exclusives this generation, so I think many is stretching it. I'm actually struggling to think of a game made by Sony that has had 60fps that actually runs smoothly...
Perfectly happy with 30fps as long as the frame pacing is solid.
It’s not a deal breaker for me so assuming it runs well I’ll be playing.
But there should be options for those that want them. It’s a first party title, it should be able to be optimised well etc.
@Fiendish-Beaver literally every Sony made game supports 60 FPS mode that works, and a good chunk has a 40 FPS mode which I believe to be a blessing.
I like how they always have stupid excuse when they can’t deliver 60fps, always. Because we all know how cool it is to have a super blurry image when you move the camera in a fps.
Big L right there. Thank god it’s on GP
It’s just the current strategy. They release “incomplete” games, then when players numbers decline, they drop an update, and everyone is talking about your game again.
@Fiendish-Beaver I mean, you can check out digital foundry reviews of them which show they pretty much all run smoothly. From spidey 2 to ragnarock and everything between.
😂😂😂 People not going to play the game because it's "only" 30 fps. How did we survive and play games before 60 fps arrived?
I've played all of the Sony games this generation, @Cikajovazmaj. Having a 60fps mode and it being the fps of choice are two different things. Yes, they may have a 60fps mode, but that is not how they are best played...
They are not consistent though, @Weebleman. I have found the lower settings to be more optimal. Maybe that's just me, but I think people see that a game has 60fps and just assume that is the best one to use, which is not how I have found it...
@Nexozi personally I’m fine with 30. But it’s because of newer tv’s causes people more issues and more noticeable
Xbox Series X: Power Your Dreams!
*as long as you dream in 30fps
@Fiendish-Beaver preferences vary for everyone, of course. But to say none run at a smooth 60fps when there is clear evidence they do is disingenuous.
Myself, I find that 40fps is the sweet spot for me, but i have zero issue with games being 30fps if I'm honest. I played games with far less than that growing up and still enjoyed them. Sadly, I'm old 😂.
@Fiendish-Beaver let's agree to disagree on that, as personally I only play PS5 on 60FPS modes for quicker and driving games and 40FPS for a more story driven titles. Also, I have gotten nausea from FPS games in 30 FPS modes before and would not force myself to play a game that way if I feel bothered by it.
So once again, a game you're better of playing elsewhere. And Microsoft wonders why their console doesn't sell.
Even Starfield was already running at 60fps on PC on hardware inferior to the Xbox at launch. This is going to be another case of exactly that.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner Forza always looks fine for me. Think people just make a big deal out of it.
Xbox just keeps taking L’s. I didn’t care too much for the game to begin with but any curiosity is pretty much just gone now.
Un smooth and choppy 30fps.
Blurry when panning around for definite.
Yes years ago I knew and had played no different
But now I always play at 60fps it is so poor otherwise.
It’s like eating a Brussels sprout nowadays instead of chocolate.
I shall wait for the PS5 Pro version and if that is still 30fps I won’t be getting the game and of course won’t be playing on my series x with GPU.
Disappointing. I think the option for 60 should at least be available. I’m still not sold on this game and this news does nothing to get me interested, quite the opposite.
@OldGamer999 next gen seems to be 30fps or horrible FSR upscaled image quality in big titles, as well as devs being creatively bankrupt. This generation has been a let down in so many regards.
I’m not a stickler for 60 FPS and do get what the devs are talking about with making choices visually. But as is the case with other games, can’t you drop fancy lighting or whatever CPU heavy graphical enhancement in a performance mode?
Anyway, this is still one of my most anticipated games.
@Fenbops
This generation has been a disaster on many levels almost from start to finish.
I had started calling it the half generation from last week.
If you go back to the PS4 and Xbox one generation, the cost and the games we were getting, far more exciting and better value for money and the hardware and some crazy fun stage shows.
This generation is as flat as the world is round.
Fair enough, @Cikajovazmaj. I don't play driving games on the PlayStation, but all the other big Sony exclusives, I have ended up on Performance Mode, which is not 60fps. Ultimately, having 60fps, and it being [the[/b] way to play are two different things...
PS5 exclusives - choice of quality or performance at launch
Xbox exclusives* - choice of 30fps made for you, might patch in 60fps once the game is dead
Sick of it
*timed of course
I think that is fair enough, @Weebleman, but my main argument was the use of the word many, because there have been some, not many. However, what I was also getting at was that having a 60fps mode, is not the same as it being the way to play it. Every time I have ended up playing on Performance Mode because the 60 fps mode didn't quite cut it...
FPS really isn't that important!
@Fiendish-Beaver I think you meant to say Quality or Balance, as Performance is lingo for a 60 FPS mode..
Seems like Microsoft sucks at tech and innovative with Xbox
Yes, @Cikajovazmaj. More than likely, mate. It's usually the one in the middle! 😂
I agree with what you are getting at, @OldGamer999, however, I find it staggering how many people are suddenly incapable of playing a game at 30fps, when pretty much until this generation, that was all we had!
Yes, I get that it is disappointing to not put our fancy consoles through its paces, but that is not the same as a game being unplayable because it's not 60fps.
As someone that played games since the very first commercially available game (Pong), I find it kind of amusing that only 60fps is good enough, because, boy, have I played some games with low fps in my time, and still managed to enjoy the experience.
Thus, I can only conclude that for everyone else, this is their first generation... 🤣
I can't stand the stuttering with 30fps, it really grinds my gears.
Problem is that I notice 30FPS in a second when I play a game and after that I get annoyed with it when moving my camera around that it lags/stutters.
I will sacrifice graphics over FPS any day of the week.
It is such a dealbreaker for me personally so I really don't buy any games that are 30fps locked.
For you who don't care about FPS, more power to you, wish I was one of you.
@Fiendish-Beaver I get you pal. Different strokes for different folks. Similair to you, my first console had actual wood on it 😂.
I don't see the issue with 30fps. Especially when people class them as unplayable. Utter nonsense
Hilarious lol, Xbox really is a laughing stock these days.
Edit: Actually they have been a laughing stock for a long time now so I guess I should be used to it, still funny though. 🤣
Xbox isn't even trying, it feels like. They've had this discord enough at this point, what are they thinking?
Sony launches their games with options, fidelity or performance.
Xbox is just constantly trying to catch up. I am losing faith in their first party stuff.
@Fiendish-Beaver
Remember I go back decades and when 60fps came along it was excellent for me.
When you have the top TVs with VRR 4K 120hz you want your games as near to that as possible.
When I flick a game from 30fps to 60fps the panning around is so match better and clear and smooth and I just can’t play at 30fps, even if I do a little I think look at this blurry mess.
My son who is 19 won’t even touch 30fps if he can help it. It’s like a red rag to a bull.
Some of it is as we have experienced 60fps and a good few games especially on my PS5 Sony Studios games mainly, then we expect it on all games especially this new generation and also with what the big wig sales reps said it as the consoles got announced.
@DeadmeatSWE
Totally the same as you.
I won’t touch Avowed now until it gets a 60fps patch or maybe a PS5 Pro version at 60fps.
But of course it has to be a very good AAA game first and foremost as well.
It is funny how people talk about 30fps as if it is unplayable.
30fps is fine for games like Hellblade 2, Avowed and even Starfield. 60fps is a good addition, but 30fps it is far from being unplayable.
People complain for the sake of it.
It would be a problem if games like Gears of War E-Day released at 30fps, but I'm pretty sure it will be 60fps.
This generation is so poor.
Who remembers the release of last generation
£350 disc consoles and assassins creed also at 60fps open game world looking extremely good.
We have come no further really in all this time and definitely not with this new generation, which costs more, it’s a joke and us poor gamers pay the price.
The only decent thing they have done is given us quick loading times with the ssd.
@OldGamer999
There "should" always be a option between quality - Performance on all games.
I remember with Starfield before it was released how they defended "30fps" target. It is now 60fps but there is lot of bs everytime with Xbox when they try to defend 30fps.. I would believe it is more for covering up that there is not enough development time and resources to optimize it to run at 60fps.
The 4K 120fps concept has really not aged well .
@eduscxbox
It’s not unplayable but a blurry mess compared to 60fps and this generation should have 60fps.
It’s bad developers that make excuses.
Just like with Starfield. Which has a 60fps now after a patch.
@DeadmeatSWE
The problem with Xbox developers and I do sort of feel sorry for them.
They have to produce for series x and the dam s, also the pc world and cloud world for day of release.
If you take a Sony studio game day like the new Astro Bot releasing next month.
The developers focus on just one special thing the PS5 console only. It makes a massive difference to time and costs. And helps use all the power of that individual console.
That’s why Xbox will never release a game that takes full advantage of the series x and is a true quality AAA game. They have too many systems to develop for. Though some big massive third party studios do manage it.
If you took even 343i and said producer a new Halo campaign on series x only don’t think about nothing but series x, the difference would be massive.
All those developers and skills honed in on just one device and no other projects as well.
@eduscxbox "playable" isn't exactly how company should release their first party games, there is nothing to expect from them and not from 3rd party cross platform games, some arguably offering more in accessibility, optimization and graphics options...
30 FPS is good enough for gaming as long as it's generally stable but 60 FPS is always a nice bonus to have.
I will never fully understand why people get so incredibly upset whenever it comes to framerate.
It's a pass for me then. I'll wait for the future 60 fps patch or avoid all together.
@StylesT If someones questioning the absence of a basic feature for a video game released nowadays is equivalent to a crybaby by your logic then you're part of the problem.
@ChopstickPhilly Except 60fps is not a basic feature by any means.
I couldn't care less, if the game is good. Hyped.
@OldGamer999
100% agree.
Xbox and the game studio know that 30fps will scare potential customers away. So it is ballsy to stand and tell people that it will be 30fps. Either they just need to ship it without delay or they don't have the talent to optimize it properly.
As long as the frame pacing is good, I am happy with 30fps. So far Xbox has been pretty good with the frame pacing on Forza 5 and Starfield. I tend to prefer higher visual quality/RT over higher frame rates but that's just my personal preference.
Lets be honest the majority of gamers don't even know what 30fps means and don't really care. I only learned about fps/frame pacing and resolutions in 2020 when I started watching digital foundry videos ahead of this current gen because I was bored in lockdown.
I just found funny how first-party studios from other companies as well as some third-party studios get a pass when it comes to optimization.
Zelda BOTW = 30fps (drops to 25) no complaints (Excuse: Switch is portable; but according to some comments aren't first party games suposed to be optimized for the console?).
FF16 = 30fps (with a messy 60fps performance mode with a ton of frame drops) also no complaints because, y'know, it was a PS exclusive.
Now Starfield at 30fps was a Problem because first-party xbox studio can't optimize.
Avowed at 30fps is a Problem because first-party xbox this and that.
Complaining, complaining, complaining. Keep complaining everyone while I enjoy the game. The game looks great.
@eduscxbox Except Head of Marketing for Xbox clearly mentioned in this tweet that it should have been one
https://x.com/aarongreenberg/status/1258378640087060481?t=vKIEhu66eorRLDOcP9zDqQ
P.s Cheers @andrewsqual
Wow that is disappointing. PCs with equivalent specifications as XSX will be able to run the game at 60fps because the developers will give them the option to downgrade visuals. Evidently they do not deem console users worthy of having choice though. Shame.
@eduscxbox there was plenty of discourse around ff16 and continued to be so since the PC release.
Switch does get a pass because it’s 7 years old, switch2 probably won’t get the same grace.
@eduscxbox Zelda BOTW and TOTK have been universally panned for it's performance. They get a partial "pass" because they are genuinely greatest games of their time. Pure art level.
FF16 has performance issues in general play (inside VRR window), but locks to 60 during combat. I don't like this approach and consider it a fail, but at least you wouldn't lose/die due to performance and slower/lagier input.
@eduscxbox are you serious? Switch is a handheld, ff16 was considered ***** to play and had a lot of discourse until performance patches, your argument is disingenuous.
"they believe that since the game is a first person single player game you don't need a 60fps mode."
That's the worst justification by far and it's not even close 😂
I can't believe a human said that, so following this though no single player game really needs 60fps! So all the Souls games would be best in 30fps!! The person that said that should come out and apologize for treating us like idiots.
I'm glad all these new In-house Xbox devs keep tripping over themselves to make fantastic announcements. Indy going to PS5 just months after the Xbox release. Avowed having a not-locked 30fps. Even big Phil using corpo-speak to try and soothe his customer base. Just keep polishing the turd that is Xbox marketing at this point, so I can continue ignoring this.
News worthy of a Michael Scott ‘This is the worst!’ cringeface
@eduscxbox "People complain for the sake of it."
No this is something legitimate to complain about, I'm guessing the PC version doesn't have this 30fps is good enough disclaimer! I'll put it this way, if the Series S didn't exist all these games would be 60fps out the box 😐
@Scirius "Switch is a handheld". But according to some people in the comment section the first-party studio must use the best of the hardware, so in those people logic, Nintendo should optimize with the switch limitations in mind.
That's not my personal opinion, just going by the logic of some comments. The standard has to be the same.
For me Zelda BOTW was a great game, put more than 200 hours on it and so was Starfield that I also have more than 200 hours. But games should be judged by the same standards.
@Tecinthehead That makes no sense. Starfield just received a patch for 60fps on Series S.
@ChopstickPhilly it's blatantly not a basic feature though isit lmao
Would it be nice to have a 60 FPS option ...sure but the people who act like it's the end of the world....well makes me wonder what thier life is like that they get so upset/angry that a computer game doesn't have the precious 60fps
@eduscxbox if xbox has a handheld then you can compare on same standards, ps5 and series x are the two comparable 500$ home consoles
So if only running at 30fps.
Are we expecting something more graphically superior to say open world Horizon Forbidden West, Burning Shores in environments and detail and textures and enemies and effects and weather systems.
Because this older game runs at 1800p at 60fps on PS5.
Avowed won’t come near that and won’t even be native 4K at 30fps.
@ChopstickPhilly Oh, that famous quote always shared incomplete.
There was a follow-up to that a couple days lates: https://x.com/aarongreenberg/status/1260017717001678849?t=BsKqy7Gwlo_DoBOG-i8xGQ&s=19
I know one for definite is Avowed was produced by this very good developer with no restrictions for series x only. No other distractions.
We would be getting 60fps and the game looking just as good in all other aspects.
To many systems a Microsoft’s equality system.
@Scirius You're not getting the point. It doesn't matter if it is handheld or home console.
Optimization means to fit the game on the available hardware.
For example, they could lower graphics further, they could lower resolution even more or whatever else to make BOTW reach 60fps, but that would sacrifice the game experience, so they decided to go with 30fps for a more pleasant experience.
It is the same thing for every hardware.
@StylesT Why shouldn't it be? Obviously I understand that there's people out there that wouldn't mind trading off the framerate for higher graphical fidelity, however, and dare I say, the majority of people would rather sacrifice image quality for 60fps. Giving options to players is always better than restricting them to one sole option that will leave one group or the other dissatisfied.
Let's also not pretend that the current gen systems aren't capable of pushing out 60fps in these games. I find the lack of a performance mode in any of these games more of an excuse rather than an incapability on the dev team's side.
@Fiendish-Beaver I can assure you this is not my first generation!
Your point would be sound, except it doesnt acknowledge the big difference that the new tv technologies have made. On older tv techs Ive never minded 30fps and some games often struggled to get to that. But on an oled for example, many people will percieve the flicker, and for me, that can often lead to headaches or motion sickness. Its not about people being 'nit picky', its a genuine problem for many with newer tvs.. I do wish it wasnt.
Im currently playing wukong in performance mode, which is great, but on the other modes its genuinely painful to look at...
@OldGamer999 I don't think this is a issue at all, as PC games have been optimized for multiple hardwares for years.
That 'performance and quality' mode is just a simple variation of 'low, medium, high' presets PC always had to fit all kinds of hardware.
@Scirius a bit disingenuous. Redfall and Starfield are 60fps. Yes they launched at 30fps, but who cares about the past? They run fine at 60fps now.
@StylesT well makes me wonder what thier life is like that they get so upset/angry that a computer game doesn't have the precious 60fps...
That's turning things upside down a bit, isn't it? Nobody is upset/angry, people are just expressing their opinion that 60FPS is a crucial feature for them, and they would skip the game without it. Doesn't seem like an emotional thing to me at all.
@eduscxbox
So why don’t they do it for series x on release date of Avowed.
I just have to get over myself and understand Xbox studios is the house of average, good games don’t get me wrong but average.
I am not going to get my big quality AAA fix from them anymore like say Sony, GOWR, TLO2 or Nintendo TOTK, Mario Odyssey.
Simply because they put their studios games on as many devices as possible on release day and now probably PS5 a few months later.
The studios never get to focus on one platform like Sony and Nintendo, getting the very best from that platform with one single objective.

@jedinite tango wouldn't be dissolved if redfall launched with 60fps
I may get hate for this, but everyone who is defending 30fps needs to stop.
There is zero reason for the developer to not include a 60fps mode with lesser graphics.
There are many of us who ‘need’ 60fps. I literally cannot see the improved quality of graphics they are on about because it’s all hidden behind the shuddering blur of 30fps.
The main reason I went for Xbox at the start of this generation was the backwards compatibility that made old games 60fps. I played some of last gen’s games for the first time because they finally weren’t 30fps. Like Assassin’s Creed:Origins and more.
I will not be playing Avowed until it is 60fps.
I tried to make an exception with Starfield and that was a big mistake. I only now started playing it since their 60fps patch, but to be honest I’m hardly excited anymore especially after spending so much on it to play it early etc only to be disappointed.
Some people will call people like me ridiculous or whatever. But honestly, I’m not going to spend my time or money on games that limit my enjoyment when there are so many other games out there for me to experience that cater to what I want - one being smooth gameplay.
60fps is a big deal to many people. It’s not just a preferred option, it’s the difference between a game I will play and one I won’t.
It will be 60 fps one day on Xbox.
When Avowed is about to be launched for PS5.
@Cikajovazmaj Are you kidding lol ..always see people being overly dramatic when games are announced as releasing with no 60fps
I expect the game to get a patch liek starfield and redfall did but, why Microsoft feels the need to release their games at 30fps (generatig a lot of bad press) to then release the 60fps path months later?
I do hope that at some point they will announce something - anything - about this game that makes me want to play it.
@Pabpictu the thing is that first party devs like Obsidian should be aiming to make the best game possible for the hardware (XBOX) so MS's studios overshooting with the specs is just annoying, Nintendo's exclusive use the Switch in great manners (except pokemon lol) and Sony's first party games (and deals like FFVII and Stellar Blade) all have 60fps modes and even 40 in some cases, meanwhile MS does the most rubbish attempt ever
@Kienda - spot on, I’m exactly the same.
@eduscxbox The difference is though, that Nintendo has never marketed the Switch as "the world's most powerful console" and heavily promoted 60fps as a selling point.
Fair enough, @Titntin. What's Wukong like? I've been toying with getting it this weekend...
What was your first console, @Weebleman? The first one I owned was the Intellivision, though I first play Pong on an Atari console at the age of 9 in the Summer of 1972 whilst staying at my cousins for the holidays. I got my butt kicked by my cousins because they'd been playing it for months whereas I thought it was some kind of witchcraft...! 😂

@Fiendish-Beaver Atari 2600 was mine. A joystick with one button, a pair of paddles for pong and the start of a gaming passion.
@Ribbitsneed
That is the point they have to make a game for series x and series s and PC and cloud based gaming.
A Jack of all DEVICES and master of not the series x.
Where Sony and Nintendo development makes for that one specific console.
So we will never see a quality AAA full use series x power game.
I have said this since day one and it has all come true.
Xbox is the average good game for all devices.
Not for me but ok for some. Such a shame really.
Totally waste of the series x and its power and a total waste for me buying a series x really.
@Weebleman
Exactly the same as me Atari 2600
Pac-Man, defender, bezerk etc.
I'll say it again, no Xbox studio is targeting console specs. They don't care about it, so they are doing minimal optimization before release. They will do that when they are getting the PS5 port ready, so you can expect a 60FPS patch around the time they announce that.
So I'm going to take it from your posts that I remain the only one on these forums that is currently in their 60's, @OldGamer999 & @Weebleman... 😂
@Titntin Yep, not just OLED. My fast refresh IPS is nearly unplayable at 30 unless it's a game with no camera panning. Interestingly at 40 it's fine - played hogwarts that way, but at 30 it's unplayable.
@Scirius Let's just take a moment to remember Sony hasn't actually released any PS5 games other than a few games artificially locked to PS5. They're all PS4 games with a graphical enhancement pack for PS5.
Wait, @OldGamer999! As a Baby Boomer myself, where do I sit on this spectrum of hard working...? 🤣
@Fiendish-Beaver
Very hard working 🤣😊
@Fiendish-Beaver
Sorry I’m under 60 and just over 5 years away. 🤣
@InvaderFromSpace
Totally agree, all devices development and not a master of their own console the series x.
@Fiendish-Beaver Im loving it. Its rock hard, and things youve come to rely on in games, like mini maps, or even a compass, just arent there, so you need to adjust your approach. Its a little rougue like in that you can farm earlier sections to increase skills until you are strong enough to get by certain bosses, and I really need that as my old reactions are struggling. Its def a goty consideration for me depending on how far I get 😊
@NEStalgia
'They're all PS4 games with a graphical enhancement pack for PS5.' Thats a bit of a reach, and factually incorrect. Returnal is my fave game this gen along with Elden Ring and thats not a ps4 game. Or are you ignoring facts to suit your narritive?
Obsidian presents ‘Un-Wowed.’
you guys are funny, just enjoy the game? Sure 60fps is nice to have but 30fps will not stop me to have fun with this one.
Eventually they will probably develop a performance mode after release.
If you want more, play on PC...
@Fiendish-Beaver 45 here sir. I offer a pint of the finest stout in honour 😂
@Titntin I said Sony hasn't released a PS5 game only PS4 games with PS5 upgrades - Elden Ring isn't a Sony game. And Returnal's PC requirements are: i5 6400, GTX1060, SSD optional (recommended.) It runs on a Steam Deck. Very much a game built to PS4 standards.
Now, that doesn't mean that Avowed couldn't run on an X1 (or at least 1X, base X1 was worse than PS4 so it's a bad comparison.) But people comparing games never developed against X1 standards vs games built around PS4 with enhanced graphics running in 60fps mode aren't comparing apples to apples.
Of course Starfield shows a lack of effort with "no 60fps mode on console" followed by adding it, so there's more than one problem. But I still think for a fair comparison we need to wait for the REAL developed-for-PS5 games to someday (maybe?) arrive before comparing. If GoT2 is 60fps with PS5 gfx standards, there's something to it. If it's 30fps only, then it's an industry/hardware generation problem not an MS problem.
It'll run 60 fps on PS5.
Within six months of release, Avowed will be 60 fps. Lol. Especially when it's announced that it's coming to the PS5.
@Fiendish-Beaver If you remember Pong (which was 60fps), then you must also remember the 8-bit and 16-bit days, when 60fps (or I guess 50fps in your region) was the norm on consoles!
30fps was always a compromise used to push graphics that the hardware couldn't comfortably handle, whether that be early 3D before 2000, "HD" rendering in the 7th gen, or slightly "juicier effects and lighting" today.
I understand your point- that poor performance was commonplace from 2005-2020 or so- but it's really not accurate to speak of 60fps like it's some new invention that we didn't already have 30+ years ago, or that only young people would care about.
As for what changed to make people start caring about 60fps, that's a topic for a whole other rant. Personally, I've been grumpy and entitled for ~20 years, ever since I figured out why some of my games were so juddery and hard to see, while others looked smooth!
Yes, @smoreon, you are correct, Pong was a 60fps. Incredible to think that because we do tend to think of it as some new kind of level that we have only just reached. That said, these days, games are a tad more demanding than Pong was... 😂
Sweet, thank you, @Titntin. I'm thinking about getting it on the PC. Is that where you are playing it? I think it has some issues on the PS5 that make me hesitant to buy it, and goodness only knows when (if!) we will ever see it on the Xbox, though if it does reach the Xbox, it will likely have much the same issues as the PS5 is experiencing...
@eduscxbox What universe were you living in saying g nobody complained. Pushsquare communitu alone whined about FF and it's framerste/ along with DD2/ Ronin endlessly
Nintendo Fandom is surreal, they basically never complain. They let Nintendo pee in their cereal and steal their wallet while asking " please sir, may I have more"
WTF!
STOP THIS NOW!
60FPS OR DONT BOTHER!!!!!
This is getting ridiculous 🤷🏻♂️
Former BFF Phil: “we’re a business.”
And people here are your customers. It’s not unreasonable to expect finished games, exclusives, 60fps and general reasons to care.
Shows how out of touch game developers are, it's not xbox 360/PS3 era, 30fps is unacceptable and i hope they're prepared for the complaining from players like with starfield people don't care about 4k or ray tracing if it comes at the expense of frame rate.
Really not interested in the game at this point and i finished pillars of eternity 1 and some of 2, 30fps 2024 is a joke.
Devs need more time with UE5 optimizations and especially with the series s around! It's not a hardware issue, it just need more work from the devs and the roadmap tells us that eventually the game needs more time and that's why they change it's release schedule. Obsidian also hasn't coalition and Ninja Theory experience with UE5. A 60fps performance mode is possible and it will come later as redfall and starfield but if you ask me it surely seems bad for the "most powerful console" in the market
People are nuts with their need for 60 fps. Sorry, but it’s a tiny, whiny, vocal minority. This isn’t super metroid. It’s an rpg. If you want 60 fps, get a $2000 PC. We’ve been playing games at 30 fps since the advent of 3D. It’s only this console generation where suddenly people require 60 fps.
@jesse_dylan How about we start making 60fps games instead of games running performance-heavy tech like Global Illumination and Ray tracing. This generation has many next-gen only games running at 60fps, it has already become a standard.
@Fiendish-Beaver Im playing on ps5 mate. No issues in performance mode for me and its a goty contender for my tastes.
I think few people would have issues, so if you get a chance to try it, Id urge you to do so 😊
@NEStalgia I never said Elden Ring was a Sony game, just my game of the generation with Returnal close behind. Using PC port specs to analyse a ps5 release shows you have absolutely no developer experience at all. You live with your excuses and your choices, they are yours to make, but your angle on everything you write is obvious to see. The fact is, I play ps5 and get to play the vast bulk of releases with a 60hz mode. That wasnt my experience with my series X, and it should be. Everyone tells me MS are software specialists, but you wouldnt know it from their sub par releases.
@jesse_dylan see post #95
30fps is a sacrifice I'm not willing to make any more
I get the feeling that every game that has been in the making for 3+ years now have the 30fps as the maximum target.
I’m curious to see when Indiana releases if that gonna be max 30fps on release.
I suppose the funniest thing about all of this 30fps uproar is it's all irrelevant. It's not gonna affect sales of the game because everyone will keep paying that subscription fee regardless. They could release a 5fps, 3 minute long game of a dog licking it's ass and they already know its gonna make money because they have sub fees. It's that simple.
The kicker is, no matter how outraged folks get, they won't cancel. Because if they do, poof, their recent games collection just disappeared.
Now you have me completely uncertain what to do, @Titntin. I prefer playing on consoles, but the Push review of the game does mention some issues, and when I asked, they suggested I should go the PC route. However, I prefer the simplicity of playing on a console, so... 🤪
The more I hear about this game, the more interest I loose
@jesse_dylan didn’t Xbox advertise their console running 60fps and 4k 🤔
@KillerBoy Yes, and there's no shortage of games that do.
Wow im glad i brought food to the comments.
How and why is it that past generation consoles have had no problem with 60 frames per second? We have the most powerful consoles ever and they seem to be struggling to get any kind of performance out of them. I have a series X and I have a gaming laptop, but I have decided I'm pretty much just only going to be buying games for PC from now on. If the Xbox store has good deals that are really cheap on some games I'll probably buy them, but my main focus will be PC. I think we're at a point with PC games where they are easy to install and configure and have all the benefits of increased graphics and frame rate. Like hellblade 2 on series X is 1080p 30 frames per second. I played hellblade 2 on my PC at 1440p 60 frames per second with everything maxed out and I only have a 4060.

@ZYDIO To be fair, the past two generations had pretty abysmal performance: almost all large-scale games ran at 30fps and lower, and the Xbone/PS4 in particular had painfully slow load times.
This current generation has got to be up there with the 6th gen for performance: 60fps is commonplace again, and loading is back down to a few seconds in most cases.
I do agree, though, that every new game should have been 60fps (or included it as an option), starting in 2020. We already know that open-world games with beautiful graphics can do 60fps on a potato system, so hardware isn't the issue.
To be clear, I'm not saying "devs need to stop being lazy", but rather that 60fps needs to be a priority/baseline for every game, without exception. Yes, the graphics will be a little less fancy, and I'm okay with that.
@Titntin IDK if these upcoming ms games are really built to utilize the current console or not. My point is the games Sony as so far released are games built around last gen regardless if they chose to lock it to PS5 or not. We know both consoles do those types of games at 60 just fine. It's the newer ones that are 60 or bad 30.
@smoreon Exactly. Make the game withh 60 fps baseline. Problem solved. Graphics are already good enough. I've said this before, "There comes a point where you need higher frame rate to enjoy the additional graphic fidelity." At least 60 fps is needed to see the additional detail in motion. I don't care if it looks pretty in a screenshot if it's a blurry mess when I play the game. It's like what's the point?
Being that it is a Next(FAKE) Gen Console why cant we do do last gen graphics at 4k 120fps with good game-play, I rather that over graphics.
Next Gen my Aunt Fanny!
@JayJ there seems to be a shortage of Xbox exclusives running 60fps though. How can you promote 60fps when your own studios can’t run games at that.
Eh. I play across all consoles and pc so this doesn’t bother me. I just hope the game is good.
They just need more time, we say about a game just delayed to next just to make room on the calendar. Where could they find more time?!
The only person almost as bad at their job as Aaron Greenberg is Matt Booty. It's no wonder this brand failed. F*** me.
Honestly really surprised by this. Nothing about this game screams pushing the boundaries of what can be done (unlike Hellblade for example). 30fps is disappointing. I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a performance patch 4 months later
are they going to get away with it i'm means should sue them for false advertissement and under delivering and over selling the capabillities of their console.
No biggie. I'll still play it and have fun.
@Rog-X Really what's all these games your talking about? Because the only ones I can think of are Hellblade which flopped and Indy and Cod which are both on playstation meaning Sony 1st party studios will have actually released more than them and yeah I know Concord flopped and nobody cares that's why it flopped.
If you're going to mention flight sim etc then be aware that none of the others are actually made by 1st party Xbox studios in the same way Helldivers 2 wasn't.
