Xbox's Avowed now has its launch date locked and loaded for Feb. 2025, which means we're bound to see and hear much more about the Game Pass RPG in the coming weeks and months. Right now, Gamescom 2024 is going on in Germany, which is proving to be a great place for more Avowed; we're starting to see some previews hit the web right now.
Across the three previews we've taken a look at, the consensus is largely positive - especially from IGN, who've given it a glowing preview this week. To get a better idea of what each outlet got to play, and how they've found the game so far, we'll drop a quick summary from each preview down below.
IGN
"Avowed was a surprising delight to play for the first time. After a lot of questions about the shift in art direction from the teaser trailer, questions about the length, and a combat demo on the Xbox stage that had many asking if the game was earlier in development than expected, I’m happy to report that Avowed is feeling great, looking great, and offering a compelling story based on the early slice I played at an event.
This small slice Obsidian gave us the opportunity to play was a treat, and while it’s a tiny glimpse, our 50-minute demo session flew by in the blink of an eye. And that’s always a good sign."
Eurogamer
"I'm still a bit fuzzy about the lore of Avowed - I've not played Obsidian's Pillars of Eternity games, whose world this new RPG shares - but after an hour hands-on at Gamescom 2024, I'm clearer about some of the details. And, happily, I'm a little more convinced this is a world I'll explore further, when Avowed's new February 2025 release date rolls around.
If you're after a fresh Obsidian hit after that, Avowed is one to keep an eye on. Also, more Garrus."
Shacknews
"After taking this first opportunity to try out Avowed, it was hard not to feel like this had some of the best elements of the Elder Scrolls formula mixed together with some of Obsidian's tried-and-true RPG flair.
More importantly, it could fit in alongside some of Obsidian's best work like the aforementioned Fallout: New Vegas and The Outer Worlds. Obsidian appears to be confident enough in its work that it's taking a few additional months to give it some extra polish."
It's safe to say that these previews are making us eager to try out Avowed, then, which fortunately isn't too far away even with Obsidian's recent delay. The Xbox RPG is coming to the Game Pass library on February 18, 2025.
Well, PXers, what do you think to these early Avowed previews? Tell us your thoughts down in the comments.

Any announcement as to when it releases on the PlayStation, @Kezelpaso? That's not meant to be facetious, I'm just wondering whether they actually announced it, particularly after the less than enthusiastic way in which the announcement of Indiana Jones was greeted by most Xbox gamers...
I read the full Eurogamer preview and it had very good results, including fluid movement and the way it handled itself with the controller movements. This was during a dungeon exploration part.
Looking promising for sure.
@Fiendish-Beaver It will be announced for PS5 RIGHT before they release it for Xbox.
@Fiendish-Beaver
If they know it’s coming to PS5 say within 3 to 6 months of Xbox release they should say so.
And if not day so.
They will definitely know for sure if so at this stage.
It’s like they are getting gamers mixed up in their stupid minds games.
Fair enough for saying about the Indy game, so credit there. But tell us about this game and others as they get an Xbox release date.
@OldGamer999 Would it matter? If they say no PS5 now, they'll just announce PS5 in January. If they say PS5 now, who knows they might rescind it in May. You'll know the strategy as soon as they do!
@NEStalgia
They should say if they know and they probably do.
Like any other real decent publishers do.
Gamers have discussions to make on what games and what console.
Mine is shall I keep my series x and GPU since it runs out.
They are playing business mind games and the more they do this the more I’m put off staying with them.
When you have been with them since day one Xbox, it’s not easy to decide.
Happy that it’s starting to take shape nicely as originally it did look rough and a little jank.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner
Maybe this could be that game, finally for Xbox.
@OldGamer999 sadly it won’t be. I think that the game is going to be fable that is finally that big hit.
Msfs will also be very good but obviously that is a niche game.
I think since this is a new IP, this won't be on PS at all or at least for a very long time. Either way, this is my most anticipated release since The Outer worlds was one of my favorite games last gen.
The game looks cool & I will play it on Xbox.
I couldn't give a fudge if someone else gets to enjoy it on a PS5, pc, smart fridge or a pocket calculator.
I just hope folks enjoy the game the platform they play it on is irrelevant.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner
I’m not sure, it’s hard really as I’m from the gears, halo and Forza horizon days and used to get excited for each of those.
But the main thing you were certain they were going to be big quality AAA games.
Like for halo to halo 2
Gears to gear 2
FH 1 to 2.
The really can’t wait and look forward to dead certain Xbox studio games.
Then Sony took that crown with the PS4 mainly
With the uncharted series, TLOU 1 and 2 etc.
Real big hits that got announced early but you so looked forward to them. Zelda BOTW to TOTK etc.
At the moment across all platforms there is just none of that vibe or look forward to excitement of a dead sure quality AAA coming in the near future.
Soz to be so gloomy that is the way the industry seems to me right now.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner
When the PS5 and series x got revealed.
Phil came out and said don’t expect graphical leaps this time round.
Shawn Layden I think, it was one of the ex top Sony dogs said, don’t expect as many big AAA releases in this generation.
I always remember that and should have listened.
Let's hope it releases on Xbox. After Towerborne eveything is possible.
Little worried from the Dukes preview saying they didn’t confirm 60 fps
@OldGamer999 surprised on fluid movement being that trailer showed stiffness and the ai looked robotic
@OldGamer999 people try to say it’s our age but no gaming has changed .. it’s like they forgot how to be create with the same story lesser and lesser . Nothing beats halo 2 release or gears of war ! Now Phil seemed to worry about indie games more for a console and not pay for exclusives he could’ve done with marvel or dc comics or make video games based of movies / shows … why not AAA teenage mutant turtles with good graphics ? Why no def jam vs roc nation which is something that’s different .. or a cyberpunk assassin creed style game or a space jam game with football instead .. games that may be risky but at least it shows effort and being creative because these games gives that nostalgic vibe years after when people remember them
Is this open world like Skyrim? Or more similar to Outer Worlds?
I'm still not too pumped about this game, but the good previews are a relief at least. Here's hoping that delay is used to give it a really good spitshine.
@Doomcrow Structurally more similar to Outer Worlds, iirc. It's reasonably open, but across multiple smaller maps rather than one big one, and with a focus on a central plot rather than a sandbox.
@Elbow The reviews of Starfield were a relief too then. Only 50 were allowed to be published the first 2 weeks it launched. You think Previews are any more honest?
@andrewsqual That's a good point. I remember the Redfall impressions versus what that game ended up being, too. Though that one was undoubtedly a disaster from the start. I dunno, I hope Xbox finally gets something that's not a mismanaged mess, bungled to hell that's actually exclusive. So far the only true console exclusive it has is... well. Redfall. lol
Especially since we can't even consider Hi-Fi Rush an exclusive anymore.
