We're all well aware that Call of Duty has some of the biggest download sizes in the biz, and Activision is clearly keen to make some improvements to this ahead of Black Ops 6's launch this October. That's music to our ears!
The company will achieve this in multiple ways, including separating Call of Duty: Warzone from the standalone titles so it's not downloaded by default, and expanding the use of texture streaming technologies.
Here's a bit more about the latter:
"With these capabilities, we can cycle content that is less frequently used by players to a streaming cache, avoiding the need to download it directly to your device’s storage. Going forward, more content will be included in this cache."
"With this change, you may see older content that briefly appears at a lower quality until the streaming cache has fully loaded. The resolution of content streamed from the cache will depend on what setting you select for this feature."
All of this will apparently result in "smaller and more customised downloads", with Black Ops 6 confirmed to be a smaller download size than Modern Warfare 3 at launch. The downside is that in order to prepare for this, Activision will be pushing out a seemingly very large update very soon that will "reorganise game files" and "add new tech".
Modern Warfare 3 players can expect a sizable download to arrive on Xbox in the near future, then, but hopefully that'll pave the way for a less painful experience with Call of Duty file sizes for Black Ops 6 and beyond. Fingers crossed!
