Back in the day, during the Xbox 360 era specifically, Xbox was closely aligned with the Call of Duty series. Microsoft would advertise each release, DLC packs started to come out first on Xbox, and generally speaking, when you thought of COD you thought of the 360. Well, in response to a meme posted on social media, Xbox's Aaron Greenberg hopes that the team can go back to that - with the help of Xbox Game Pass.
You may have seen the meme before — it's basically like a '2010 Xbox starter pack' type deal — and it tugs on the nostalgia strings related to nights in playing Xbox 360 with Black Ops and Halo: Reach. Here's that meme, along with Aaron's response:
It's quite funny to see an Xbox exec respond to something like this, but we're totally here for it to be honest. After years of COD being aligned with PlayStation, and their deal feeling like it started to pull more and more away from Xbox players, we're so ready to go back to the glory days of Xbox x Call of Duty.
And, going back we hopefully shall. Xbox Game Pass should be a massive help in getting the famous FPS series closely aligned with Xbox again, and hopefully it brings some of those OG players back to playing the franchise on Xbox once more - this time without all the silly exclusive content nonsense!

I read the headline and before reading the article, I knew, I just knew the source had to be Aaron Greenberg. And sure enough...
Nobody else uses hyperbole like "recreate history" when referring to a mundane event like "adding a game to a subscription service."
Add the older COD games to the service man...not the hot pile of garbage that is MW3. Pleasssseee...
I have been digging mw3 on gamepass. I am excited to dive into black ops 6 at launch. I would never consider playing a cod game at launch without gamepass but I might be falling in love again with the franchise that I abandoned very early in the xbox 1 days.
COD and FIFA deals were one reason the xbox360 did sell well.
And then Microsoft let it all slip almost over night to the opposition.
They need to market this properly....I have not doubt they won't though. I would imagine that someone in ABK can do it justice....they didn't let go of their marketing did they?
@BRT15 they will be coming eventually. Guaranteed they used MW3 cuz it new and because it has the cod launcher that they had to test before the new one comes out. Also they will be drop feeding the games into gamepass, don't think they blow the load like they did with Bethesda ever again.
Probably by releasing them on game pass yearly at this rate is the history that he wants to create!🐂💩
@BRT15 Personally, I don't think they do that until after Black ops 6. They want people playing that at launch, not older titles in the series. I think modern warfare iii was a concession to the loudest protests of those who are sick of waiting.
@NeutronBomb it's also the latest title that they are releasing paid content for. They want money end of the day so getting people playing old cod without any MTX won't be helpful.
I'm sure they will come eventually next year, May-June in guessing.
I'm not complaining, imagine having a Premium Subscription and having to pay £70 on top of that to play it.
@NEStalgia For some reason they just love the guy. You can only fail upwards at Microsoft.
More people playing MW3 (original), BO2 and BO3 will be amazing.
I do hope BO6 lives up to the name.
@WhiteRabbit beach volleyball
@BRT15 add the old cod games and Xbox enhance them. Otherwise this whole acquisition wasted a whole generation.
@sixrings I'm still mad a whole bunch of 360 versions of COD games (like Ghosts) were delisted AFTER being added to the backwards compatible program. No good reason to do that.
I'm only into the campaigns but I'm here for it. I can remember the ads and talk back on the 360. I'd occasionally play private matches with friends.
Nothing historic about that, Aaron is just nonsensical. They should have done a special edition Series X or S console for BLOPS 6.
Or maybe one of those Series X wraps.
Something we can buy and Microsoft makes money but I guess they don't want money.
Whatever.
@BacklogBrad Similar situation here. I walked away prior to Advanced Warfare, though not due to some CoD-hatred. I had tried MWII during the demo/beta period and had a lot of fun with randos in MP & DMZ. So, I had been considering returning to CoD for a couple years (holding off for the inevitable Game Pass drop).
A couple days ago I beat the MWIII campaign on Game Pass. Interestingly, only 4% of players have completed the campaign, and only 0.20% completed the campaign on Veteran.
Honestly I had so much fun in the 360 era am glad it's now all level the playing field I mean plus I said to my friends watch them offer an upgrade to the vault edition for like £25 and bingo they do it for £30 I've already got that vault edition they said they won't earn money putting it in gamepass of course they will same with 10% off your cod points they'll be earning 👍
For some odd reason I remember Sony Bytch slapping Xbox by making cod a timed excluse,I can't remember which one but that is ultimately what made me hate COD.I still do not play any of them because I like my warfare grounded in reality, and cod over the last 10 years has been anything but.And the deal breaker was selling out and putting rappers as ducking operators. They have no business being operators because they would NEVER be found in any war zone period.Flat out.
