Since finally getting an Xbox release date for Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, we've been excited to go hands-on with it ASAP, but it seems we're going to have to wait a little longer than expected. The teams behind the Space Marine sequel have cancelled the game's planned beta, which means we all have to wait for the full September launch to play it.
Posting on Steam, Saber Interactive and Focus Entertainment say they're now "entirely focused on optimization, polish and fixing remaining issues ahead of launch". Then, the teams go on to say "this means we will not run a public online beta, as it would take the development teams away from preparing for the full launch".
"Space Marine 2 is almost ready. We are now entirely focused on optimization, polish and fixing remaining issues ahead of launch on September 9. This means we will not run a public online beta, as it would take the development teams away from preparing for the full launch, and our priority is to ensure the best possible experience at release.
We know this is disappointing news for some of you. As a thank you to those interested in participating, players who registered via the online signup before June 28, 2024, midnight Paris Time, will receive the limited Bolt Pistol skin,"
While this is ultimately disappointing considering the beta would have provided a nice taste of the game before launch, the team's reasoning for its cancellation is understandable. Space Marine 2 has been in development for some time now, so it's only natural the team wants to hit that September 9th release date.
Earlier this month, a brand-new gameplay overview sold us even more on Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2. Gears of War fans, you might want to keep an eye on this one!
What do you think of this news? Still planning on picking the game up? Talk to us about it down below.

Isn't that beta like critical part of September release? Or does September release become a low key beta launch marketed as full release now?
In my experience every time beta was cancelled what it actually meant was "we'll fix it on prod".
Couldn't be a good sign? Betas are to test servers and bugs and all that. So it'll just release completely untested for public response.
I guess the people paying a premium to get the game 4 days early will be the beta testers.
@Cikajovazmaj normally running a beta involves time/resources/beta build etc
Hopefully they are skipping it for polishing etc.
The worry is if it needs a major overhaul or something.
I guess it’s now a wait for reviews and potentially pick up later.
I bought the Collector's Edition of the game, and they took payment last Friday. I wasn't expecting to pay the £262 that it cost until much closer to the day of release, but whatever, I guess. Now, though, I'm left wondering whether I will get the pistol skin in that edition or whether I have completely missed out because I did not sign up for the beta...
@PsBoxSwitchOwner agreed that it costs, but its a cost you shouldn't/can't eliminate. It's like deciding out of all parts of your car to eliminate tires. You can do it, but you probably shouldn't.
Running beta testing is supposed to inform behavior under load, bottlenecks, user interactions with platform and among themselves.. Validate gameplay loop outside of confines of internal cherrypicked QA team.
But, it might all be OK and they end up delivering good, polished experience.
@Cikajovazmaj Not really.
At this point, this beta was nothing more than a network test for the multiplayer component as it is too far in the cycle for it to be for proper game changes.
For an example, when I was paid to test AC Unity, and most games I test, are done so over a year prior to release.
Doesn’t make sense but i guess it’s probably like world war z but more improved so the beta will show it’s repetitiveness
