Remember South of Midnight from Compulsion Games? The bayou-inspired Xbox title got its big reveal last year - and now we have actual gameplay and a confirmed release window!
Yep, the We Happy Few developer is bringing the game day one to Xbox Game Pass in 2025, and we've dropped the team's new trailer up above. Here's a bit more about the studio's ambition with South of Midnight:
"Compulsion likes to do things differently, and South of Midnight is a shining example of just how far they’ll take that philosophy. This hauntingly gorgeous Deep South folktale is an action-adventure, with a unique identity that only this studio could have woven together."
What do you think to this one, folks? Drop your thoughts down below!

Was the frame rate on this one deliberately awful? The gameplay wasn’t too bad but the frame rate on the cutscenes were horrific. Intentional style choice?
@user0 Yep I think it's the cutscene style
@user0 yeah, thought the same. Also, despite only a short look at gameplay, definitely left a lot to be desired for me. Looks incredibly mid so far
@emj2010
I specifically meant the frame rate during gameplay looked alright. Compared to the cutscenes.
The gameplay itself, need to see more.
This looks fantastic. This is exactly what I want out of the industry: new, creative ideas and IPs that show us new worlds unlike anything we’ve yet seen in gaming. This one hit me as good as the Doom reveal.
I dig the art style personally, although I know some people won't like the cutscenes' frame rate style. I'm very interested in this, and I can't wait to see more.
I quite enjoyed this one. Glad we could see gameplay.
I also like that stop-motion look of the cutscenes. Gives it a very distinctive syle.
It hurt to look at
The change between gameplay and cutscene was a bit visually jarring but other than that nitpick I really liked the look of this! Looks quite narrative heavy and I’m absolutely for that.
Gameplay looked a bit generic but I like the style
Looks solid to me
Loving the look of this game.
@user0 Its an animatiom style called stop motion.
This looks really good. Can’t wait.
I dig the stop-motion style.
As long as its better than we happy few. That game was terrible, not to mention a buggy mess at launch.
I didn't expect stop motion at all, very interesting choice! Gameplay didn't look mindblowing or super novel, but it definitely looked solid. Oh, and if that music was in-game music and it wasn't just being played over the gameplay, I LOVED IT and I would buy it just for more of that vibe.
i'll give it a shot if it runs at 60 fps on xbox.
This looked weird and interesting. The big fish reminded me of ‘The Singing Ringing Tree’! 😄
