One of the many highlights of the Xbox Games Showcase this year was Microsoft's new take on a classic strategy series in Age of Mythology: Retold. If you've been wondering about the graphical improvements and upgrades coming in this new version of the game, developer World's Edge has now shared some comparisons during a post-show deep dive.
According to the team, the original game's art has been completely remade, and the "whole world has been redone" in the new version of the game too. This includes visual improvements to heroes, enhanced building destruction, and more.
You can see this glow-up in the many comparison shots below, showing the 2024 release next to the 2002 version of the game:
World update
Building destruction
Titan update
Unit update
Hero update
As for the the gameplay, Age of Mythology: Retold is described as being a "faithful retelling of the original title" that launched all the way back in 2002. Apparently, "it's not just about preservation" - with the team mentioning how it's adding new features and mechanics - such as God Powers now being rechargeable. There'll also be an additional 'age' at the end of the game — the Wonder age — which makes God Powers cheaper to use and results in "chaos", according to the team.
World's Edge has also confirmed that this Age release will be a simultaneous release on Xbox and Windows, as well as Game Pass of course. In doing so, the developer will carry across the control methods from the console versions of Age 2 and Age 4.
