Last week we got news that Fallout 4 was due a fresh patch following the next-gen update's initial launch - and that fresh patch is now here! Fallout 4 Next-Gen 'Update 2' is live on Xbox, containing a number of performance improvements and general bug fixes.
Highlights here include the 'Frame Rate Target' option which allows users to choose between 30, 40 and 60FPS performance targets, and we also have new 'Visuals' and 'Performance' modes on current-gen consoles.
Here are the full patch notes:
Fallout 4 Next-Gen Update 2 Patch Notes
Update Versions
- Xbox Series S|X:1.10.765
- PlayStation 5: 1.10.985
- PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One: 1.10.984
Patch Highlights
Xbox Series S|X and PlayStation 5 Display Settings
Thanks to your feedback, we’ve been able to implement the ability to control your graphic fidelity and performance. We highly recommend you run with the default settings but now you can change your options to better fit your playstyle and display.
Frame Rate Target
Frame Rate Target allows you to choose between 30, 40, and 60 (default). It is important to note that to select 40, your display must be able to support 120hz.
Visual and Performance Prioritization
You can now choose between Visuals and Performance (default) while trying to maintain frame rate target. If you choose Frame Rate Target of 60, we recommend selecting Performance. Both modes may adjust internal resolution dynamically when scenes or action get heavier.
Please note both modes can only be changed from the main menu.

Why not just remake the damn game on a new engine at this point
Nice, I’ll give this another shot. Right after I manage to put down Fallout 76. And after the new patch for Starfield comes out and I play through that.
@TheSimulator You know that would cost a whole lot there better off just making a new fallout and stop supporting Starfield
Visuals/60fps is the way to go!
Also glad AutoHDR has been re-enabled.
@TheSimulator fallout 3 first
I did some quick testing on both series S and X. On Series X it looks like visuals+30 hits 4k all the time. Visuals+60 is lower, probably between 1440p and 1800p, still looks fantastic.
On Series S visuals+30 looks like 1440p, while visuals+60 looks to hit about 1080p most of the time. It's noticeably more softer but still looks fine.
The visuals mode definitely works this time. Draw distance, shadow quality and foliage density are much improved on visuals mode across both consoles.
Take with a grain of salt, I'm no expert. This patch looks a real improvement though. At least it works.
I haven't tested VATS properly yet to see if that is fixed. (Edit: many people are saying VATS is still bugged)
VATS is still broken... so irritating...
