We waited a long time for Bethesda to deliver its next-gen upgrade for Fallout 4, and it's safe to say that last month's update hasn't turned out to be a particularly smooth transition for Xbox Series X|S players. Now, the team at Digital Foundry has had a good look at how Fallout 4 next-gen is shaping up under the hood, and it's definitely not hitting the right notes at the moment.
DF reckons the whole update is "weirdly undercooked" for something that's been in the works for so long, going on to say that the current-gen Xbox versions are "bugged", and the PS5 / PC versions are "disappointing" at launch. Here's their verdict on Bethesda's new update, which delivers mixed results to say the least:
"The turnout for this next-gen patch on PS5, Series X and S is undoubtedly disappointing then. There are a few wins here at least: the ability to officially run at a dynamic 1440p 60fps on Series S is a nice improvement, while being able to run at 60fps on PS5 is a real breakthrough after being limited to 30fps on the older PS4 app for so long.
But there's so much that's being left on the table for a definitive console experience. The fact that the core settings, the world detail and shadows, are still not on par with PC's best - even running on PS5's 30fps mode - is a surprise."
The analysis also goes on to mention how the Xbox versions just aren't working properly right now — which was mentioned by the outlet at launch — and DF expects them to be fixed by Bethesda shortly.
"More plainly, the fact that Xbox systems do not work as the patch notes state, with a non-functioning performance mode toggle and missing 120Hz and 1440p modes, needs to be addressed.
I'm fully expecting Bethesda to loop back on this in due course, to patch up what are obvious and plain issues on Xbox. It is a free update, but one that comes with a set of compromises - and in some respects it's a step back from the older One X app."
For now, if may be worth holding out for another update before jumping back into Fallout 4 - especially if you're playing on Xbox Series X and S. However, if you're able to gloss over the issues mentioned in this analysis, then the game's next-gen update is out now on Xbox and PlayStation platforms.

I'm not convinced they intended for it to launch when it did.
It didn't make sense to release it weeks after the show, to have no tie in content, another not have paid bundle (like skyrim anniversary).
Throw in the bugs and it seems like they threw out what they had when they realised how well the show was doing.
It does not need more time. More than a year for a next gen update?! BGS is terribly inefficient
I'm happy enough with the update seems grand to me I wasn't really expecting much more there's better effects lighting resolution and 60fps sounds a good update to me!
The only difference I've noticed is the graphics look slightly less "messy" with performance mode off. Took zooming in and out on some mouldy food in the inventory to notice the difference lol.
@BBB We are all winners the game looks so much better to me from playing the old version the day before you can't please everyone but I'm one of those who is pleased no matter who tells me I shouldn't be it's great to be happy with it honestly and I'm on series s
I have been playing it again and if anything, the fact that there really isn’t much of a difference is a real testament to Xbox’s BC program with things like FPS Boost. Still a great game through and through imo and I have been thoroughly enjoying my time with it again. Love the Fallout universe and I’ll be diving back into New Vegas again after this. Got the Fallout bug like many since Amazon’s tv show dropped. Just cant seem to get enough atm.
Yeah, no wonder it was a free upgrade.
Was it really worth borking the community developed London mod for?
Coincidental timing on that huh.
@GeeForce In no universe is it a developer's responsibility to ensure their patches and updates are compatible with fanmade mods.
Speaking of, the creator of Fallout London sounded more and more narcissistic with his comments about how Bethesda should have consulted with him to make sure their mod worked on the new patch.
@Chinesus
Didn't say it was the dev's responsibility. More like unfortunate that such a lacklustre upgrade was incompatible with said mod.
Waste of time and developer resources.
They have plenty of other things to be doing, like making new games with good quality control.
I'm just waiting for New Vegas to get a resolution bump like literally every other Bethesda game published. It is like they treat it as the red-headed step-child.
@GeeForce
You new to PC gaming or something? Updates breaking compatibility with mods is normal and expected.
It's bugthesda game.
That's all anyone needs to know.
@InterceptorAlpha
Where did I say it wasn't normal and unexpected?
To answer your question: No, I have been PC gaming since the 1990's and experience mod breaking updates regularly, most recently in Euro Truck 2.
@Chinesus Those Fallout London people. Are they charging or making money off the London expansion thing? Wondered about that.
@GeeForce You didn't say. You implied. Either that or you're just being wontonly unreasonable.
We've know about the patch for what, a year? Anyone and their mom with a mod or making a mod knew when it dropped their things may break.
There was no coincidental timing aside from it possibly being rushed for the Fallout TV show. I'd expect someone gaming at least as long as me would get that. 🤷
They’ve fumbled the Xbox version it doesn’t even work properly. Quite shocking from a studio owned by Xbox 😂
@GuyinPA75 I'm fairly certain it's completely free, they would have very likely run into trouble with Bethesda's lawyers if they were charging for it.
I'm honestly surprised they've gotten away with as much as they've gotten away with so far given how close their branding is to official releases and how prominently their branding features "Fallout" in it. Even Valve, a company who are extremely chill with their fanbase modding and messing around with their IPs, politely asked the developers of Black Mesa to remove "Source" from their title so it wouldn't be mistakenly identified as an official project.
@InterceptorAlpha Yeah nah but mate you're missing the bit where the whole Fallout 4 next gen patch being released was a conspiracy by Bethesday to screw over Fallout London 😂
Too much of the internet actually believes the above to be true, it's depressing.
