Following multiple reports in recent months about 'Call of Duty: Black Ops Gulf War' launching in 2024, it looks like Xbox is about to officially unveil the game this June. As part of today's Xbox Summer Showcase announcement, Microsoft has teased a game-specific 'Direct' to follow the main show - a Direct that's all-but confirmed to focus on this year's Call of Duty game.
We say all-but confirmed because, for the time being, Xbox is calling this a "REDACTED Direct" while being rather sheepish with any other information. However, we know that longtime Black Ops developer Treyarch is making this year's Call of Duty game, and Black Ops has long been synonymous with bold orange imagery - and iconography just like the example in the picture up above.
"Like our double-feature last year with Starfield Direct, immediately following the Showcase we’ll be airing a special deep-dive into the next installment of a beloved franchise. We can’t say much, so for now we’ll call it the Xbox Games Showcase followed by [REDACTED] Direct."
There's more, too. Microsoft says this Direct will deliver "a special deep-dive into the next installment of a beloved franchise" — which Call of Duty definitely is — and we also know that a new CoD will release this year, making a Black Ops deep-dive even more likely. Remember, last year's Xbox Direct was all about Starfield - a game that was also confirmed to be launching just a few months after the showcase.
Look, there's an outside chance that this could relate to a different game entirely, but we'd eat our own hats if this doesn't turn out to be the next Treyarch Call of Duty game. Okay, maybe not really eat our own hats, but you know, we're pretty confident that a big CoD Direct is coming here. We're mere weeks away from finding out officially anyway, as Microsoft has just unveiled all the dates and times for this year's show.
