Remedy's new investor call this week not only brought news on future projects like Max Payne, but also some fresh updates on already-released titles - including last year's Alan Wake 2. We have both good and bad news relating to Remedy's 2023 survival horror title, as the team gives us an update on how things are going.
We'll get the negative out of the way first; Alan Wake 2 still hasn't made any profit yet for the dev team. Remedy says that the game has "recouped a significant part of the development and marketing expenses" but not all of them so far, meaning it's still playing catch up in regards to making money for the company.
Right, onto the more positive news here; DLC development is well underway at Remedy "that will extend Alan Wake 2". We don't really have any other information on the team's DLC content just yet, other than it plans to release two expansions — Night Springs and Lake House — and that they're both part of a £15 / $20 'Digital Upgrade' pack. Hopefully we see these DLCs in action soon!
We're also hoping that over time, Alan Wake 2 will go on to be a commercial success as well as a critical one - it ended up being one of last year's highest-rated Xbox titles, and we happened to like it quite a lot as well! I’d probably have bought it by now if it had a physical version.
But I can’t bring myself to pay more than £5-10 for anything digital. So I’ll wait until it’s that price or lower.
Isn't this a recurring theme it seems like for Remedy. I could be hilariously wrong and be thinking of another company.
Their games seem to be really adored by a hard-core small market, but they always seem to fail to hit that homreun
Only game I will buy full price its going to be GTA6 if its good.
The rest I can wait for a sale.
I can't even play all the games that launch on gamepass.
Always bad to see outstanding games doing poorly and this was an outstanding game. Probably not the smartest move not to have a physical version, but it is what it is. I am sure as time goes on, the game will eventually become profitable. Maybe this will actually get them to reconsider a physical release.
Amazing game loved every second but that's the way it is now with how much they spend on the games where a game can be adored by who played it can't make a profit but I wouldn't say not having a physical release harmed it that much to be honest
I'm waiting for a steam version and substantial discount. It probably won't be for another 2 years or so before I play this game and that's all right with me. I like their games but I'm in no hurry.
With a physical edition I would probably jump in on xbox at $20 but digital titles I much prefer steam.
That stinks. Was a really nicely done game. Production value was all there too. Some of the best cut scenes, and jump scares I've seen in a game.
Can say I'm one of the ones holding out for physical. Would love a complete physical edition even if it means waiting another year.
Having as an Epic Games Store exclusive probably didn't help, either - PC gamers don't like it. I bet it would get a big boost if it dropped on Steam and GOG.
I am waiting for physical
They aren't on steam right? That's why.
Simple. Release physical copies
I'll buy a physical edition with all dlc content for a reasonable price.
It definitely seems like there's been a big impact on sales by the lack of physical. Such a brilliant game so hopefully a physical version appears for those who have held off.
Great game it deserves to sell
Release a physical copy of the game and watch it boom. That's held me back in getting the game. I'm learning I have an immense amount of patience waiting for good sales with digital media
I jumped on an Epic Games store sale before Christmas, AW2 for $35. I would have paid full whack but hey, times are tight. I wouldn't be surprised if many people are waiting for further sales and discounts. It's a brilliant game, especially if you like the joint universe of Wake and Control. I hope they at least break even as there aren't many studios that tell stories quite like Remedy.
Sounds like the devs have a flop in their hands.
You got people like me who didn't buy it because it did not have a physical release, you have those who didn't buy and are not going to buy it because of the dei/sbi kiss of death, and you have those who didnt buy it because it’s not on Steam.
Like others have said I'll wait as long I have to for a physical copy. At least until it's $10, then I might download it.
So what? As expected when they mess with physical buyers. And even a lot of lazy digital buyers aren't willing to pay full price for a digital game.
It would have fitted easily on 1 PS5 disc and on Series X, they could have used 2 disc's. It's not that hard.
Be proud about your 1 million sales, Remedy.
I hope this proves that digital only for AAA titles equals less sales. A game that expensive to make needs all the publicity it can get. They didn't market it enough either, let's be honest. The original game is from 2010. Must casual gamers under 26 know nothing about that game. Put it in a box.
Sadly this is an instance where no physical version means no purchase from me. I’d have bought it for PS5 without hesitation if they’d done a retail disc release.
As it is, I’ll just wait for a massive discount down the road, if ever. My backlog between three platforms is so large that I feel no deep compulsion to get it.
I'm not having it hasn't turned a profit yet. Sounds like a dodgy thing my own company do.
I smell lies
I'm actually furious to hear this. It's an amazing game that deserves way more success. I get the "no physical" argument but I think it's launch window wasn't the best decision from Remedy. Hopefully the game finds strong legs and maybe the upcoming DLCs will boost sales. I for one can't wait! (I have the Deluxe edition)
Considering what nonsense has been going on behind the scenes in the industry, expect to be hearing a lot more stories like this in the days to come. I'd assume (and hope) they gotta pull in less ridiculous numbers to turn a profit than Spider-Man 2 has to, but it's also an inherently less popular IP so it might just as bad when scaled accordingly.
I'm quoting the great philosopher Dua Lipa : "LET'S GET PHYSICAL !!"
God damn it, it's not hard to understand : for a game of that caliber, and at this price, you need to put it on shelves, so people can see it in shops, and you know... buy it.
I know that I'm still waiting myself. And I know that I'm not alone.
@Bobobiwan the game shops in my area closed. So what shelves can they go on?
It’s a perfect GP game for me but I wouldn’t pay for it.

The game that won't let you progress until you pick up a random note on the ground despite knowing where to go, truly breathtaking. Highly overrated game.
Jesus the whole internet came to prove me wrong sorry your all missing out on a great game over semantics
They should have released it on disc. I'd have bought it if they did.
@CutchuSlow I think most of them are taking some sort of stand for physical media the game is great shouldn't really matter how to comes like using Netflix I'd rather go to blockbuster for my physical rental thank you and production of physical media ain't green were just getting with the times
@TheGame004 SBI...? *insert huh cat meme here. The internet has truly broken the minds of right wingers. Holy crap...
@CutchuSlow That's a very fair point, actually.
I know it's the end of an era. But I just don't want to accept it. I'm still buying my movies and games in physical whenever I can.
I'm waiting for my Baldur's gate III copy to arrive, right now. And I'm also waiting for a physical announcement of Alan Wake 2.
A man can hope !
@EVIL-C So people wanting physical copies of games are being labeled right wingers now? 🤔You’re right the internet has broken many minds…
While I understand why it didn't, not launching on Steam was probably really, really bad for its sales on PC. I know I won't buy anything from the EGS.
Not doing even a small physical print run was also leaving money on the table.
