It's almost time for us to publish our Pure Xbox Game of the Year 2023 roundup - you'll find out the winner on Christmas Day - but until then, we thought we'd take a look at the highest-rated Xbox games of 2023 according to Metacritic.
This has been an incredible year for gaming in general, and so it's no surprise that we've got some absolutely stunning AAA titles in the list from Resident Evil 4 to Alan Wake 2, as well as fantastic indies such as Sea of Stars!
Below, you'll find the full list, however we've eliminated The Witcher 3's Complete Edition as it was only the physical version that launched this year (digital was last year), and Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty has also been omitted due to being an expansion - the same goes for Resident Evil 4's Separate Ways DLC.
You should also keep in mind that Metacritic doesn't count anything with less than seven professional reviews for Xbox, so if you're favourite title didn't make the cut, it might be because it just hasn't been reviewed enough yet. That includes Baldur's Gate 3, which still doesn't have enough reviews for Xbox to be categorised for now.
- Alan Wake 2 - 94
- Diablo 4 - 91
- Resident Evil 4 Remake - 91
- Street Fighter 6 - 90
- Dead Space - 89
- Cocoon - 89
- Persona 4 Golden - 89
- Sea of Stars - 89
- Hi-Fi RUSH - 87
- Monster Hunter Rise - 87
With it being such an amazing year, there were a few very worthy titles that didn't make the list. The likes of Hogwarts Legacy, Mortal Kombat 1 and Forza Motorsport were all in the mid-80s, while Starfield landed on an 83. And of course Baldur's Gate 3 hasn't been rated yet either, otherwise it may have ended up taking the top spot.
The complete list beyond the top ten is available over at Metacritic if you're interested, and as mentioned, don't forget that we'll be publishing our own top ten here at Pure Xbox on the 25th - made up entirely of your votes!
What do you make of this best Xbox games of 2023 list? Let us know down in the comments.

Congratulations to Capcom and the others. Don't you want a Code Veronica remake next?
Glad to see Cocoon in there, great game.
@Banjo- Yeah, and they're probably working on it. But what I want even more is a Dino Crisis remake.
Just finished Alan Wake 2. I thought it was horrible. Too long, convoluted story, bad level design, audio issues, clunky combat. It did have some real good original songs though. But, far from the best this year. I thought RE4, Diablo 4 and Dead Space were way better.
I’m hoping Alan Wake topples over Baldur’s Gate on at least the Xbox platform this year! It deserves the win!
@Nighto4 I haven't played that one.
It's a bit sad 2 of the top ten are remakes
@Banjo- It's in the works and rumor is a demo is imminent with a potential first quarter release.
That’s quite the list, and I haven’t played any of them yet. Maybe I’ll get some time soon to start trying some of these out.
When I read that Xbox has no games I just find it baffling. I did have a Nintendo Switch, PS5 and Xbox Series X but sold the PS5. It sat collecting dust.
It’s been an awesome year for gaming on Xbox and made even better since I got the Logitech GCloud which has led to me gaming more than I ever have before!!
@Nighto4
Keep dreaming. It"s free for now.
@Lup See you in 2026 (?
@eire-shabba I'll never understand this mindset. What does it matter if they are remakes? They are absolutely awesome games and bring older games to new audiences. Of my big three games that I was excited for this year, two out of three were remakes.
Im all for remakes just doesn't look good to me when there's that little good out in a year that there in a top ten of the year list but I'm all for remakes just got Mass effect legendary and loving it
@eire-shabba Compared to recent years that feels light, and they're both really good remakes TBF.
@shoeses They must be I'll definitely at some point play resident evil 4 remake I played the hd version for 360 loved it but couldnt bring meself to play Dead Space remake I downloaded stuck it on for about a half hour and couldn't go any longer and I loved the original 3 games
@CHAOSbutler117 Hopefully!
@BaldBelper78 Just about every game on that list can played on other consoles.
@Realist Same can be said about the PS5 Top 10.
Almost half of the games on Nintendo Switch Top 10 of 2023 can't be played anywhere else. So, I guess Nintendo Switch "has more games"?!
@BaldBelper78 I ignore those comments as I generally read it as "Xbox doesn't have any cinematic third-person action games that only [the person typing the message] am interested in".
Probably about 90% of the games that release per year can be played on at least PS5/Series X/PC where the other 10% may skip a platform or 2.
It's just a stupid argument because, hypothetically speaking, Microsoft could release 10 games (on top of all the third-party releases) in one year and a competitor could release 3 and people would still say that Xbox has no games.
@GamingFan4Lyf I own all consoles. I dont care about which console has what games. Just found it odd to say your other consoles collect dust while all those games coulda been played pretty much anywhere of his choosing, lol.
@Realist Fair enough. I mean, I do too, but I chose the Series X as my third-party machine.
My PS5 had 55 total hours of play time this whole year and it was all dedicated to God of War Ragnarok.
Only reason it hasn’t “collected dust” is because my house is dusted every other week. 😅
Hopefully, after Christmas and some releases in 2024, it will get a little more love from me! Third-party games (and a few Switch exclusives) took priority over PS5 exclusives this year.
It’s been an awesome year to be a multi-platform gamer, though! 👍
@GamingFan4Lyf My PS5 has 1100 hours and Xbox got 90. I Use X/Gamepass for its exclusives. I just wanna play all the games.
@Banjo-
Seems like 5 is going to be the next Resident Evil remake, unfortunately. Code Veronica is the one that should get it.
@GamingFan4Lyf I’ve grown tired of the Playstation exclusives as of late. I just don’t care about another Spider-Man game. I’ve also started having an issue with my hands and the dual Sense. It’s really starting to be painful if i play for more than an hour at a time. I miss the Dualshock. So now I’m just buying everything on my Xbox and will keep the PS5 for what few exclusives i find interesting. I still find all three systems providing something fun though.
@eire-shabba sad indeed & weird
@F1at8mot0 i agree , here’s to hoping sony exclusives actually become distinguishable again
@F1at8mot0 I feel you. My Christmas list is very PS5 heavy, but that's only because I got all the higher priority games I wanted while the cinematic third-person action titles Sony puts out took a backseat.
It's not that they are bad, just that diversity in my gaming portfolio took precedent - and since my Series X is my primary machine, that's where I played most of my games (except for the Switch exclusives I bought).
I don't find DualSense to be all that interesting and don't understand the hype. Astro's Playroom was a cool showcase, but after that, it just blends into the background like any other controller.
I couldn't see dealing with Adaptive Triggers constantly, though. I feel like that would eventually take a toll on my middle-aged hands if every game I played was on PS5 and used them.
I played Deathloop on both PS5 and Series X, and I never once thought "Man I miss the DualSense" when playing the Xbox version.
@GamingFan4Lyf
just curious why you chose the xbox as the third party machine?
do you prefer their online play?
even though it is a more powerful machine nearly every 3rd party game runs worse on the xbox, i am surprised by how few games have compelled me to buy the xbox version because they run the best on that hardware.
disclaimer i prefer to use my ps5 for my trophy list as my 3rd party games machine as because it works better 9 times out of ten.
Baldurs gate 3, a game of the year winner, only has 3 reviews on series x? I know it came out only recently but I'm surprised it's not had enough reviews for a metacritic score.
Diablo 4 is the biggest bore ....wish I never bought it ..but oh well ..have Alan wake 2 but haven't started it yet
I preferred dead space remake alot more than i remember enjoying the original ...and preferred it over resident evil 4 remake
@MrList I prefer Xbox for these specific reasons:
Dolby Vision
Free Cloud Saves
Better Backwards Compatibility support
Auto HDR
FPS Boost
Smart Delivery
Quick Resume
Better VRR coverage - though, games with a 60fps target really shouldn't be hitting 48fps (PlayStation's lowest bounds), either!
Seamless Save and Achievement transition between platforms (PC, Xbox One, X|S, Cloud)
I find Dolby Atmos for Headphones works and sounds better than 3D Audio on Sony (despite having 3D Audio properly calibrated for my ear).
I like that Game Pass has games I would never think to play without the exposure (but I don't wait for games to hit Game Pass - I will buy games I want).
As far as "running better" - sure that's been the case many times but not by such a drastic margin that it trumps the other reasons I prefer the Xbox.
Plus, again, the better VRR range irons out those rare issues where VRR dips into the low - mid 40s.
I despise online play and couldn't care less about it.
@GamingFan4Lyf I'm probably missing something but aren't most of those games in the top 10 3rd person action games? Looking at the equivalent PS5 list on metacritic for 2023:
Balders gate 3 - 96
Tetris Effect: Connected - 93
RE4 - 93
SF6 - 92
Rogue Legacy 2 - 90
Spiderman 2 - 90
Moss: Book 2 - 90
Cocoon - 90
Talos Principle 2 - 89
Dead Space - 89
Probably more 3rd person action on Xbox and actually a very similar list to the Xbox, and think only Hi-Fi rush can't be played on PS5 so I do find all the PS negativity very odd following this list being released? General fanboy PS negativity I understand, but following this list I don't.
Back on topic I haven't played any of those games yet and I'm eying 3 of them (once they are on either gamepass of PS Plus) plus another 4 on the PS list. 2024 has potential to be MY best year of gaming!
@StonyKL I have no negativity towards PlayStation at all. I don't have a problem with third-person action games either.
I use "cinematic third-person action game" mostly to describe the games that Sony first-party seem to make these days - as well as the types of games that Sony put out when it partners with a third-party. Though maybe I should tack on "melee focused" as well as that narrows things down even further.
I try to generalize to not sound like I am losing interesting in PlayStation as a whole, just the kind of games Sony has been churning out lately.
I still get them and enjoy them, but those games aren't "Day 1" for me lately like some other titles have been.
Sony clearly takes a ton of its gameplay design around film - makes sense given Sony has its own movie studios: it's all about the "summer blockbuster" set pieces and cutscenes.
I'd say Nintendo got the most amount of my interest this year:
Metroid Prime Remastered
The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom
Super Mario Bros. Wonder
Super Mario RPG
I played and completed God of War Ragnarök on PS5 at the beginning of the year.
On Xbox I played and finished:
The Callisto Protocol
Star Wars Jedi Survivor
Alan Wake 2
Steamworld Build
I dabbled in Redfall, Hi-Fi Rush, and Starfield as well, but never finished any of them.
I started Resident Evil 4 Remake as well as Dead Space Remake, but Alan Wake 2 took precedent and after finishing it, I went back to Control for a bit and then back to Alan Wake 2 when The Final Draft dropped.
Actually, pretty much since Alan Wake 2 came around, I have been sucked back into the Remedy games (even picked up Max Payne Bundle on Steam for like $5 just to round out my Remedy Collection).
I do have Spider-Man 2, Final Fantasy XVI, and Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition on my Christmas list this year. I plan to get Final Fantasy VII Rebirth when it comes out.
I'm sure once I get done with that list it will be time to shift focus to some different types of games, again.
@Nighto4 hell yeah. Absolutely loved the OG. That feeling when you first see the T-rex and it rips through everything chasing you. That part of the game for me is right up there with OG RE when the dogs jump through the window. Epic. Haha 😄 good times.
@F1at8mot0 glad it's not just me. I thought it was due to me using multiple controllers and switching from Xbox to dualsense. But I'm same, after an hour or so my left hand especially aches. I think the stick placement on Xbox is way better, my hands just seem to feel more natural. Would love dualsense to adopt the same design.
I use my Xbox as my 3rd party platform as well. There are a lot of reasons for that but my main two are that I VASTLY prefer the Xbox controller over PS and I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE quick resume. My single favorite next gen feature is quick resume. I like to jump back and forth between a handful of games at a time and quick resume is literally the greatest thing since sliced bread for gamers like me. I get hand cramping using the Dual Sense for long periods. I can game with my Elite 2 for as long as I want without issue.
There are other reasons as well, but those are the ones that really stand out.
@GamingFan4Lyf
a lot of the things you put there are things i like about my series x aswell to be fair.
@eire-shabba Remakes deserve credit just like any other game. DS and RE4 were definitely my top games. Good year for horror fans.
Capcom FTW...
Just finished RE4 Remake, what a thrill ride...
