The Ubisoft CEO defended the pricing of the company's new release Skull & Bones last month, and now just weeks later, the co-op pirate game is already being slashed by multiple retailers.
As highlighted by our friends at VGC, retailers are already heavily discounting the title by up to $25 following its release on February 16 for $70.
VGC: "It hasn’t taken long for retailers to slash its price, with Best Buy currently offering the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions for $44.99, and UK retailer Hit pricing them at £49.85."
Ubisoft's CEO Yves Guillemot previously justified the price by stating it's a fully-fledged "quadruple-A game", which is "vast and complete".
The publisher also revealed last week how the game had experienced "record player engagement", although external reports claim it's actually got off to a pretty slow start, even with a free trial.

im gonna skip this but get star wars outlaws day one.
To be honest this isn’t unusual for Ubisoft. They often reduce the cost of a game within a month or two of launch, it’s why I will never buy their games day 1 anymore.
Didn't the same thing happen with Riders Republic way back when? As a previous comment has stated, its not a surprise for Ubisoft games is it...
Ubisoft kind of has a history of doing this. I think only the die hard fans buy early. I honestly avoid their games completely unless it comes to GP. And even then, it's meh. Couldn't muster the enthusiasm to even finish far cry 6.
What makes this game quadruple A? It's not surprising it's ubisoft way hopefully they don't mess up the star wars game it will be the first ubisoft game I will of played properly since 360 days
Ubisoft can finally move pass this game and the baggage associated with it. Hopefully the singapore government is happy with their trash game.
Has anybody tried it?
@Old_Man_Harper I played the beta. It’s definitely not necessarily “trash,” but it’s also definitely not good. It’s very barebones in what it does. The fact that they didn’t give the game any land combat is likely the reason people are hostile towards it. It feels like half a game. It’s easy to see where large improvements could have been made. The naval combat and ship building is fun, but it’s definitely not $70 fun. If it were F2P or sold as a budget title with a budget title’s marketing, people would probably have been warmer toward the game, but as it stands, it’s definitely a 5/10 experience from what I’ve played. It’s not quite abysmal and it does some things right, but it’s clear it was just tossed out there after a great deal of investment and frustration from Ubisoft.
I must've been asleep under a rock recently... but what is a 'Quadruple-A Game'?
So this is a AAAA discount! What an enlightened world we live in!
Still not buying it tho.
No but I may try it out when the game might be at season ten in a few years time with an offline mode, land combat etc etc but for now I'm not getting lured in with their marketing advertisements for every quarterly seasonal update so they can keep me engaged to possibly get more money out of me.
@rustyduck
Just sight unseen you trust Ubisoft enough to buy their Star Wars open world game?
@RetroMan71
Not Skull and Bones that's for sure
@ZuneTattooGuy well i may wait for reviews and watch some gameplay on twitch first. ac origins and odyssey are some of my fav games. the division 2 also and i think these are the devs making outlaws.
@rustyduck
If you loved the Division 2 then buy it up, you will blindly love anything Ubisoft makes.
@Old_Man_Harper My friends and I have really enjoyed the co-op play so far. The opening before you get your first ship is a little clunky but after that we've been having a blast. Hope you enjoy it too!
@RetroMan71 A = shovelware
AA = Indy game that is very fun with 8 bit graphics
AAA = game released way too early and many bugs. will not be playable until multiple patches and updates.
AAAA = game that will be released at full price but will be on GamePass imminently
@ZuneTattooGuy people buy ubi games. get over it. you won't change minds.
@rustyduck
I know they are also most likely the same people who buy Madden every year
@rustyduck wouldn't it be cheaper to just get a subscription of ubisoft+ and play it that way
Ok! So I guess no one knows what a AAAA game is 🤣
@Deityjester depends. if its a 50 hour or less game that may be a good idea. but i also played outer worlds almost 4 times and thats claimed to be around the 50 hour mark and i have over 200 hours in it.
i have 200 hours in the division 2, not that its the same kinda game but we don't know yet.
@Old_Man_Harper yes. Its basically a mobile game with better graphics. Its kind of bizarre really. There has to be a major disconnect between devs and corporate because this outcome was obvious.
@rustyduck avatar is a pretty ubisoft game.
@Gollum there's no land based combat or mele coming to skull and bones ever. They had 11 years to make the game everyone wanted. Its way to late to try and add anything like that. The code is probably already a nightmare after 11 years of development and countless changes in direction.
Kind of baffling how bad this game is considering they basically made a much better version 10 years ago and have Sea of Thieves to copy too.
