Shortly after the launch of Alan Wake 2, developer Remedy commented on how it was "excited" to press on with its Max Payne remakes - and a new financial report gives us a hint at what exactly we can expect from the team's sprucing up job when it launches on Xbox.
Remedy CEO Tero Virtala says that Max Payne 1 & 2 Remake will have a similar development budget to 2023's Alan Wake 2, and that as a result these remakes "are going to be a major new game with great potential" (thanks, gamesindustry.biz).
Current franchise owner Rockstar is also working closely with Remedy on the remake, which is also good news. Anyway, we're looking forward to seeing some footage of this project, which hopefully isn't too far off now that Alan Wake 2 development is just about wrapping up. Virtala also commented on the team's development timeline at the moment:
"We expect Condor, Control 2, and the Max Payne 1 and 2 remake projects to advance to the next stages of development during the first half of 2024"
Given that Alan Wake 2 was a real looker with some fantastic tech behind it, we're quite excited by these comments, to be honest. We're still not exactly sure what we're getting with this remake, but, an AW2-level budget sounds pretty bloody good to us!

That is gonna be absolutely wild to see.
Hopefully they tie into Alan wake and control otherwise I'll give them a pass that bit in the first game we're the child kept on crying was horrible to play tru I think I gave the game a couple hours back when it first came out and brought it straight back remedy are great hopefully it's completely reworked
I cannot wait for these two legendary games. I have both of the OG Xbox versions but I’m still getting these day one. Hoping they get released end of this year or at least beginning of next.
I hope these games will be profitable.
I love Remedy, but I worry about the company as well. It's been taking losses and AW2 has yet to be profitable.
Part of me wonders if partnering with Epic actually ended up being detrimental to the financial success of Alan Wake 2 for two reasons:
Epic Store exclusive (majority of PC players use Steam)
Digital-only release (console players like physical releases)
Hopefully Rockstar doesn't do the same thing and we see Max Payne on all storefronts, plus physical.
@MaccaMUFC How you enjoy last Sunday bud was great wasn't it on to Wembley!
@GamingFan4Lyf Alan wake 2 was amazing but I see your point I love remedy not so much max pain but everything else even quantum break was pure class
Love Max Payne- I would buy it … bullet time changed the world…
Just grabbed Max Payne 1 to beat for the 100th time. It looks incredible on Series X but that letterbox cutting the sides of the image is a pain so this is a remaster I absolutely plan to buy
@MaccaMUFC do you know any way to get the first max Payne to display full screen?
@GamingFan4Lyf One thing in Remedy’s favour is that eventually it will be profitable. Also the sequel boosted sales in the original games and Control. Overall optimism in the company is high as they are working on Control 2, Max Payne remasters, Alan Wake 2 DLC and a multiplayer Control game… So more of a long play happening here…
Hopefully we will see some gameplay soon. They were originally announced April 2022.

Your tv may have ratio options that you can experiment with. My LG tv has cinema zoom that I sometimes use for 4:3 and 2.40:1 images that cause black bars at the sides or top and bottom on my 16:9 tv
My cinema zoom enlarges the image without stretching distortion. I can zoom from 0 to 16, at less than 16 I can move the image up or down to allow less cropping of the top or bottom of a 4:3 image.
PS2 gen games look and play best to me in their original 4:3 ratio as apposed to stretching or cropping tp fill a 16:9 screen. However some zoom that leaves less wide black bars is worth experimenting with. Some games of that gen have a wide screen option but is usually stretching or cropping. Scarface and and Gun are two that seemed to have a real wide screen option. I don't remember what options came with Max Payne on PS2 or my PS4 port. Anyway Xbox may be different.
Fun games regardless of image ratio, well except for that crying baby, I hate that.
Can't wait to see what they do with these remakes. Max Payne was such a great game when it came out.
Since it's been forever since I played Max Payne 1 and 2 I'm interested in a remake as they were games I rented (remember that?), but didn't ever finish so it'd be a pretty fresh experience.
