A few months ago, Xbox fans started getting messages on the Xbox Game Pass app that Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate 2 (the Enhanced Editions) were now playable on the service - although they never actually became available.
Now, for some reason, it's happening again. It's yet another message that suggests the two Baldur's Gate classics are already playable on Xbox Game Pass, but just like last time they've yet to show up on console, PC or cloud.
You'd probably predict that both Baldur's Gate titles could appear on Xbox Game Pass at some point in January 2024, but Microsoft just revealed a bunch of titles for early January, and Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 weren't part of the lineup.
Who knows what's happening here, but it seems pretty likely we'll see them at some point this year. That probably won't be the case for Baldur's Gate 3 though, as the devs have confirmed they're not interested in Game Pass for that title.
Did you get this notification? Hoping to see BG1 and BG2 on Xbox Game Pass? Tell us down below.

Seems weird to mention them in app if they aren't available, right?
Never liked these games, and I've tried both mutiple times.
I feel like most people that was interested already bought them. But it's cool to have the option for people not sure if it's worth their money or maybe new players that started playing the series with Baldur's Gate 3.
It gives me the “install to” option so I guess they’re available now?
@ParsnipHero That is because you can buy it and play it. The game is available, just not on Game Pass yet. The app lets you install the game but when you go to play it, the console will ask you to purchase the game.
@iplaygamesnstuff thanks for the clarification! That seems smart and shady at the same time.
@ParsnipHero It's awkward for sure. What is frustrating is there is no way to know before downloading unless you go to the store directly. It's 2024 and you can't buy and download a game through the app. Microsoft should be embarrassed.
@iplaygamesnstuff I kinda get it but yea.
Expanding on what I meant. It's smart in that it removes having the need to do a payment handshake via the Xbox Game Pass app thus reducing a dependency but shady in that you could in theory download anything and not have the rights to play it until you pay for it on your Xbox/PC.
It makes sense that Microsoft would pursue these games for Game Pass considering Baldur's Gate 3 is off the table and its popularity.
I really look forward to it.
@iplaygamesnstuff all they have to do is change the button to “preload” or similar and problem solved. Ideally a bit more information with a date would be helpful though. E.g. “Preload today and play on January 15th”. It’s just bad communication
@themightyant It could be like last year, the app said that DioField Chronicle and the Street Fighter 30th anniversary collection was coming in January and neither came to Game Pass at all.
@themightyant Exactly! This happened to me when a friend recommended a game, got excited when it was available for install. It installed so I figured it was part of Game Pass, only to get home and see that it takes me to the store. I personally don't have limited internet but this is scary thinking about some internet services that have caps.
