Baldur's Gate 3 finally arrived on Xbox this month after landing on PlayStation back in September, but as you all will have noticed it didn't launch day one on Game Pass. We weren't necessarily expecting such a huge hit to be a part of the service straight away, however it's probably best not to expect its arrival anytime soon.
Speaking with IGN, Larian's Swen Vincke says that the team always knew Baldur's Gate 3 wouldn't go to Game Pass - they think "there's a fair price to be paid" for what the team's mammoth RPG delivers.
"Oh, we always said from the get-go, it wasn't going to be on Game Pass, it's not going to be on Game Pass,
We made a big game, so I think there's a fair price to be paid for that, and I think that that is okay. We don't charge you any micro-transactions on top of it, so you get what you pay for. Upfront it's a big meaty game. So I think that should be able to exist as it is."
Larian's latest effort has gone down extremely well this year, even if cloud save issues do appear to be plaguing the Xbox release at the time of writing. We haven't run into any of these issues ourselves yet, but there are loads of reports of lost save files and such, so that's something to be aware of right now.
Anyway, once that's all sorted it looks like Baldur's Gate 3 could be one of the biggest games to launch on Xbox this year. Just don't expect it to come to Game Pass anytime soon... if ever!
Were you hoping Baldur's Gate 3 would come to Xbox Game Pass? Tell us what you think down below.

...and there is nothing wrong with that at all!
I wish there was at least a trial somehow. I want to see what the hype is all about, but I also have a love/hate relationship with CRPGs. $70 is too much for a crapshoot.
You made a big game, so it shouldn't be on gamepass?
Sounds like the CEO is trying to say we should buy the game pre owned instead. Y'know, fair price and all that.
Not my type of game but say loads of people gonna be disappointed over this but you should never really say never!
We made a big game, so I think there's a fair price to be paid for that
Proceeds to sell it for $10 more on console than PC
Not surprising, considering how well it’s sold elsewhere it doesn’t makes sense to throw it on GP, they’re likely making a ton of money on Xbox.
That's ok its up to the developer or publisher whatever some games will some games wont I'll be buying this game but I aren't till the save problem is patched
I wasn’t playing it to begin with, not my style of game. But i do think it’s perfectly fine to market and sell your game in the best business sense for your company. GP isn’t for every title. Little to no chance we see GTA 6 on GP for years and years. For the games that do hit GP we are lucky cause it really is great value.
Nothing wrong with that, but just means I can wait until it is under 30 bucks. Waited this long for it to show up on Xbox after all.
It feels like they are implying that putting a game on Game Pass cheapens it...when A) devs get paid for that, b) it means that some games that might be overlooked or dismissed, a user can try with low risk. Is there a demo? Especially with the save game issue.
Admirable position you guys stand on. But unfortunately (or fortunately?) Microsoft's cheques can speak much louder. It's just a matter of time.
It seems like a perfectly reasonable thing to me. Not every dev needs to bring the game to game pass.
To be honest, I wouldn't have played it on gamepass anyway. BG3 is a title I would rather buy on PC. If it has even half the mod support that BG1 & BG2 enjoyed than there will be years of fun on the modded versions side.
I mean you can just read the comments here, and people wonder why some 3rd party will skip Xbox or bring it to it last.
Why would it be? Lol.
Any game that sucks up 100+ hours would make sense for Microsoft to drop a huge cheque on Larians desk. Obviously the number crunching happened and it didn’t make sense. However at some point Larian asking price will drop to a level where it will and boom in Gamepass
The time to have locked them into a Game Pass deal was before the game's release and before they had any idea of the critical reception and awards it would pick up, etc. They are crushing sales now, so there's very little reason to jump onto GP at this stage of the game's life cycle. In a couple of years? That may be a different story!
You need to fix the game first and THEN say whatever you want about how much you think its value is.
@InterceptorAlpha Virtually every AAA game is more expensive on Console than PC. I'm not a fan of that, but specifically calling out BG3 is incorrect when most do it.
@themightyant Can't think of a single other company is making a claim of "fair pricing".
Totally good. Their game, their call. And a I don't think he was disparaging GP at all.
Some salty comments on here 😂. If any game is worth buying its BG3 so good on them.
Well okay? Lots of games don't show up on Gamepass lol, do they want a cookie?
So Microsoft, why'd you buy Larian?
We REALLY wanted BG3 on gamepass.
The game is a genuine masterpiece. I said well before it released on the Xbox that game does not need Game Pass. It has sold tremendously well already on both PC and the PlayStation. It is a fantastic game that has had massive 'word of mouth' advertising, and thus it does not need the exposure that Game Pass would give it. The game will likely sell very well for years, and years, to come. It is quite literally the game of a lifetime, and it will enjoy success for decades...
BG3 has massive momentum and advertising from game news sites, GoTY awards, and all other wins. The dev is confident in relying on retail alone. Why not? If a couple years from now they want to take a Game Pass deal, maybe they will think differently about it. Or not.
Forgoing Game Pass is expected for a 3rd party game like BG3.
