Have you recovered from the reveal of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle yet?! Today's Xbox Developer Direct finally pulled back the curtain on the new project from Bethesda and MachineGames, and it's arriving later this year!
As we'd expected, the game will mainly be experienced from a first-person perspective, and this was elaborated on by Design Director Jens Andersson via the Bethesda website earlier today. In a blog, he mentioned that the game's first-person view will allow players to "explore and experience things more intimately" as Indiana Jones:
“Our game is about putting you in the shoes of an iconic hero. Since we are doing this mostly in first-person, you have the chance to truly become Indy. First-person makes you part of this world – allowing you to explore and experience things more intimately. What will you do when you’re dropped into this adventure with your wits and your whip?"
However, as we saw during the gameplay footage at Dev Direct, there will be times when the camera pulls back to reveal a third-person view - so it'll be interesting to see how often this happens throughout the course of the adventure.
What are your thoughts on the Indiana Jones game being "mostly" first-person? Is that what you were hoping for, or you would have a liked a primarily third-person perspective? Come and tell us!
We've put together a poll down below, but don't forget to leave a comment as well!

It looks like way more fun like this than the 3rd person game I had in my head beforehand.
Normally like third person but this looks fantastic in first person. Can’t wait!
3rd person by far. Especially if they have gone to the effort of making Indy look great.
Count me among those who still think this should be in third person. But at this point that is a nitpick. The gameplay looks really fun, and they seem like they got those Indy vibes exactly right. Really hyped for this.
Those pullbacks Machine is doing for epic moments-I just want that for the entire game! But it looks like it will be great either way.
I’d definitely prefer third person but it doesn’t matter that much. The game looks incredibly good. Looking forward to it!
Would have been better 3rd person
I wouldn't be surprised if Ford or Disney had some stipulation that of "per-minute" compensation for every minute his face is shown.
Would have preferred third person tomb raider style.
I’m still not totally sold on the game in first person.
The only real way to tell is when you play the game really and if they have done a good job of the first person and game overall.
The studio makes great first-person games. I think this perspective allows the studio to make the best game they can.
I have no issues with 1st person views in games but a game like Indy should be 3rd person. Honestly this sounds like a case of a 1st person heavy Dev not wanting to switch tactics and do something new.
I'd prefer third person and I find the studio's explanation for why it isn't in that perspective to be kind of lame but it's whatever. MachineGames is at its best when doing first person games and I like the Indiana Jones IP so whether it was first person or third person, a sidescroller or something else, I'm going to check it out.
motion sickness in 1..2..3
This blew my expectations right out of the water. Holy hell...amazing stuff from Machine Games. From what they showed it looks and feels like Indiana Jones and that's a huge compliment.
I’m so glad this is first person. Seems not many people feel this way, but, man, let me put it this way: I love the FPS genre, but not the way the genre has been. I mean, it’s gone so multiplayer focused as a genre and so open world as a genre when it isn’t multiplayer that an old school FPS with modern visuals looks absolutely refreshing to see in 2024. I love it! It reminds me of how I felt 10, 15 years ago when a new FPS would get announced.
I was hoping for 3rd person but I still think the game looks great. I’m also surprised it’s coming this year. So looking forward to this release!
I was kind of hoping for second person. I don't believe I've ever played a game with a second person perspective, was hoping this would be the first
Machinegames is known for their first person work, so when we knew they’re working on it, we kinda already knew it would be first person.
@RentedPanda that you see it from the eyes of the enemies getting shot?
Or that you have to place a camera pointing at your face from the side and that you see yourself looking at the screen?
How does 2nd person work….? Hmmmm
Would have much preferred third person, but Machine Games has really only done first, so its not much of a surprise.
For a studio who's expertise is fps this makes sense. I was expecting third person but I'm fine with this. As Machine Games is known for quality fps games. Like the Wolfenstein franchise.
Question why is everyone saying this blew them away when we saw so little actual gameplay? All we really saw was some cutscenes with a deepfake Harrison Ford, dev interviews and a very small handful of gameplay footage.
I would have originally said third person in an instant but I thought it looked like the first person worked really well for the game. I'm not a fan of the cut aways to third person view though as it looks like it will break immersion a bit.
Well this is just wrong. All I wanted was an uncharted like game but with indy preferably based on the first 3 movies and they give me this. Still play it though, looks pretty sweet in a wrong kinda way
@Friendly I know, right? I've read a novel in second person, but in that sense most games are about "you" regardless of camera perspective. Something I shall ponder...
@DennisReynolds I don't know the graphics weren't that great ,for a first party exclusive I expected more ,oh well its on game pass ,so whatever, theyre gonna over use the Ford smirk by the looks of it.
@somnambulance like immortals of aveum or maybe ghostwire tokyo ,or you could say far cry or how about metro exodus, what was that other one called ,oh yeah, deathloop ,yeah few and far between these days 🙄
Geez another first person ….
@GhanaViking They do but their last 2 games have been their worst. Wolfenstein 2 was just okay but way worse than new order and old blood. Youngblood though was trash.
I'm delighted it's first person, it's not like there hasn't been a lot of 3rd person Tomb Raider and Uncharted games, so at the very least this should feel fresh instead of being yet another 3rd person adventure game
In general I prefer first person games like skyrim, cyberpunk etc as I prefer the camera not zoomed all the way out like in third person. First person just feels more personal and you can appreciate the details better. I liked how the game looks so far but will have to judge it properly when it releases and I get to try it out.
@Mephisto2869 Yeah, solid ones are few and far between these days. Deathloop was the only one I liked out of that bunch and it has a distinctly roguelike feel to it, even if it’s not a real roguelike. We do get FPS games, but they don’t focus on being FPS games so much anymore with good gunplay and action/adventure elements. Honestly, most of the games you listed also have worse gunplay than the new era Doom/Wolfenstein games, as well (including Deathloop, even though I really liked it). Indy looks like it could elevate the genre.
@MrMagic Youngbloods was bad. I think that is from the era where Bethesda was trying to get live service games from their studios (Fallout 76, Redfall). I liked Wolfenstein 2 though
