After a press release suggested the next Destiny 2 expansion might still make its February release window, Bungie has now officially confirmed it's been delayed.
"The Final Shape" will now arrive on 4th June 2024, which will allow the team to deliver an "even bigger and bolder vision". In a post on its official website, Bungie further explains how it realises "delays aren't fun" but mentions how this expansion is the culmination of the first ten years of Destiny storytelling, for Guardians everywhere.
"We want to honor that journey, so we’re taking the time we need to deliver an even bigger and bolder vision, one that we hope will be remembered and treasured for years to come."
While the expansion will no longer make February, the Season of the Wish will still run from late November until February next year. Bungie has also outlined what else will take place between now and June:
"Next, we’re moving Guardian Games up to March with a refreshed focus on class vs. class competition. Then, beginning in April, we’re delivering a two-month content update available to everyone called Destiny 2: Into the Light, which will prepare players for their Guardian’s journey into the Traveler. All of this is in addition to the ongoing efforts from our PvP Strike Team, including three new PvP maps dropping in May."
More information about what's to come will be shared in April, including "all-new gameplay" to showcase the "significant content additions" the team is currently working on.
This latest announcement follows on from a development update earlier this month when Bungie mentioned how it was aware it had "lost" a lot of the community's trust after the troubled release of Destiny 2's Lightfall expansion. A report also revealed how Bungie was running at 45% below its revenue projections for the current year.
How do you feel about waiting until next June for The Final Shape? Tell us in the comments.

With layoffs, that either 'limits' the ambition, 'extends' the time needed or a combination of both. What signs are there that the relatively short delay will help them suddenly realise their ambition for this big finale they had planned when they have lost a lot of the fanbase limiting the budget, lost a chunk of their staff as well and given the timescape, Putting 'something' together to conclude their game to the 'few' that will play it compared to Destiny's heights.
And move on quickly to Marathon....
It’s a real shame see Bungie end up this way. The reality though is this hasn’t been a sprint to infamy they’ve treated it like a marathon.
I didn’t mind Destiny and Destiny 2 early on but it never felt like a worthy successor to Halo where it mattered to me, the PvP. Creatively elsewhere the game is great but mechanically and systems-wise awful.
Alright, Sony. Time to get your house in order. The exodus of Jim Ryan/Connie Booth, Media Molecule, the non-existence of Factions and the continued sh#tstorm at Bungie. I think backroom politics are starting to bleed out into these studios, full stop.
@ParsnipHero I still play Destiny 2, but I stay away from PvP as much as possible. The problem I feel it has it that it's almost impossible for Bungie to balance effectively.
There are so many weapons (most of which have random stat rolls) each with a massive possible combination of perks on them. Then there's the also massive possibilities for guardian builds, the constant back and forth with weapon type nerfs and/or buffs (pulse rifles are almost comically crap at the moment)... Destiny's entire PvP environment is a sh*tshow and has been for years. I wouldn't be against Bungie dropping it entirely, to be honest.
Looks like Sony now can't manage there own studios. Funny how things go full circle.
@Markatron84 it's a shame. They really moved away from "equal starts" which is the foundation of a good Halo multiplayer. Reach and 4 being the outliers with loadouts.
Personally I always felt like Bungie should have gone the way of Guild Wars 1 where you could create a PvP character who could buy equipment from a PvP only vendor. This character could not be used in PvE. PvE characters can still be used in PvP if they wanted. It mitigates some of the grind needed like powerful weapons locked behind raids or 100s of hours of content.
I don't blame anyone for playing Destiny 1 or 2 they've crafted a long journey for people and their guardians but as someone who couldn't care less about the PvE side of things it stopped appealing to me a long, long time ago.
@cragis0001 to be fair, Bungie had issues long before Sony entered the picture.
@Markatron84 I agree 👍 with word Sony saved them from financial ruin. But you have to add Bungie to the others studios struggling making Gaas games 😕. Even the Sony fan boys have gone silent after gloating that Xbox can't manage there studios for the last few years.
@Kaloudz same here
Translation:
Sony laid a bunch of our staff off and we are too busy help other PS studios build live service games so we have to move this expansion to June.
