Just the other day, we highlighted the release of The Walking Dead: Destinies and how it could potentially be a contender for the worst game of 2023, but it's still been a popular launch according to the "Top Paid" Xbox charts!
If we look at just the UK, TWD: Destinies is actually fifth on the list in terms of the most popular paid games right now, putting it ahead of the likes of Red Dead Redemption 2 and Hogwarts Legacy. It's not uncommon to see new releases climbing into the top page of these charts, but even so, this is a very high position to have achieved.
As we mentioned in our most recent post about TWD: Destinies, the user reviews aren't that bad for the game on the Xbox Store right now, although they've been declining since earlier in the week. It now has a 2.6/5 based on over 200 reviews in the US, and a 2.8/5 based on just over 80 reviews in the UK.
We do actually have a couple of critics' reviews to share as well - GameReactor went ahead and gave the game a brutal 2/10 in their verdict earlier today, while COGconnected dished out a more lenient 50/100 score.
If TWD: Destinies continues to enjoy such a high level of popularity on Xbox and beyond though, we don't think publisher GameMill Entertainment will be too worried about the critics' opinions! Obviously it's early days and the initial interest will wear off fairly soon, so it'll be interesting to see if it can retain its position in the charts for much longer.

This is what continuous "worst game" coverage does. They sell better than decent games that didn't fall on the clickbait spectrum of great or terrible.
It's a sad system we got.
1.Make a game for dirt cheap
2. Every reviewer rushes to play it for easy clicks
3. Profit
Bad / sub par reviews are killing. Extremely bad reviews , like this one , give it a cult status and a large group of gamers do want to see what the fuss is about. To be honest , the game was not on my radar until the “worst game of the year” news came across. Now I am curious how bad it is and I am getting interested strangely enough.
Jeez do I wish this game was $30 instead. I’d have bought it by now
It's only because every streamer on Earth wants to bilk to the algorithm in a sad desperate hope of gaining clicks on their videos.
Im sure it's not that bad look at starfield reviews I'll be buying it at some point
Inadvertent, morbid celebration of the worst games of the year.. and it's madness
The sad thing is that these games get reviews when others don't. I've even seen Digital Foundry analyses of worthless games, when their audience is asking for information about games that are usually ignored because of them being good but not popular. It's a kind of sensationalism.
@BowsersBuddy In this particular case, yes, it's because of The Walking Dead.
This shows of game publishers that it’s fine to put our unifinished buggy products and gamers will buy 😂
@ZuneTattooGuy that happens with every game, you'll see one person make a video on something it could be a decades old game but if it does well you'll then see a bunch of recommendations where other YouTubers/streamers have released the same video just worded differently on the same old or obscure game. I consider these people the world's biggest grifters.
And people buying this rubbish is part of the read why we continue to get unfinished/broken etc games on release.
Because “gamers” will buy it regardless.
