It feels like we're getting news about Baldur's Gate 3 for Xbox on a near-daily basis at the moment, and the latest statement from the team at Larian Studios confirms we'll be hearing about a release date at The Game Awards 2023.
The team says the game is "on track" for a December 2023 release on Xbox Series X|S as things stand:
"Xbox players, we hear you’re looking for more news on Baldur’s Gate 3. The game is on track for a December release.
We’ll see you at The Game Awards for the World Premiere™ of the exact release date."
Baldur's Gate 3's Xbox release date is now set to arrive anywhere between December 7th and December 31st, as The Game Awards takes place on the evening of the 7th. We assume it won't be a shadow drop, but who knows?!
Whatever the date may be, we're just glad to know we'll be playing Baldur's Gate 3 on Xbox before the end of the year, and its arrival in December means it should release at a time where we aren't inundated with countless new releases.
What date do you think we're going to get for Baldur's Gate 3 on Xbox? Tell us down below.

I know it won't happen, but it would be crazy if it was announced to be coming to Gamepass. Even crazier if it was shadow dropped on Gamepass.
I’m smelling gamepass release
I’m betting on a shadow drop during the show. I doubt it’ll be Gamepass, but we know Xbox was trying. If it hits GP, man, will I have regretted purchasing on PS5.
So the "big news this week" turned out to be an announcement that more info will be revealed next month? Hope Keighley paid them well.
I haven't been too impressed with the way they have managed this xbox release.
It dose feel weird to be doing this with a game we're getting "late" imgaine if WB was hyping up the Switch port of Hogwarts like this, It'd be weird.
Obviously if it's coming to gamepass that would justify it, not that I expect it to.
@somnambulance agreed on not coming to Game Pass. Shadow dropped during the show would be great news for people who've waiting on Xbox. Either way, a massive game coming out to Xbox this year.
I’m in no rush. The game looks great but I have some more games I want to tackle before I dedicate an insane amount of time into this title.
Hopefully a physical copy is released for consoles by the time I want to play it.
@DonaldMcRonald larian
I'm not sure about it being on GP. It would be huge to announce it's available the night of TGA though 🤞
Very cool. Can't wait
Nah I’m pretty sure it is gonna be shadow dropped for after the show. Geoff does like those sort of announcements like when they did the forspoken demo last year or the BOTW DLC back in 2017
@DonaldMcRonald they are literally the only dev to have this much trouble with the Series s but i can get passed that. There was definitely a better way to handle their shortcomings instead of publicly blaming the hardware and creating a massive headache for xbox. They made the big fuss in the media and it turns out just a quick meeting with Phil Spencer led to no co op on series S and xbox engineers working with them for nearly 6 months to figure it out.
They then manipulated the release date for ps5 to put right up against starfield and give them a second big launch moment to market.
Now they are stringing everyone along with the past few "announcements" being stay tuned for more information soon. Turns out they are just waiting for the best marketing opportunity to make a simple date reveal.
It's weird that they are treating this as a grand reveal and trying to leverage the game awards instead of getting the game out as soon as possible. It's hard to see the urgency when they are planning a big showcase to tell us the game is no longer delayed on a single platform.
@DonaldMcRonald I have the game on Steam and played it way back in early access. I don't personally see the "size and scope" you are mentioning.
@DonaldMcRonald not sure how it is my issue. Am i the one struggling with development? I will once again remind you of them being the sole devs to require an exception to this rule. Also doesn't explain the theatrics of teasing a date so much when it is just a "hey we finally got it running" announcement.
Here's hoping the Series S' version is cheaper since it's an inferior one.
@DonaldMcRonald the minimum pc specs of a mid range gpu (970) from 2014 suggest otherwise.
@DonaldMcRonald my first response said I am less concerned with the fact that they couldn't get development right and more of how they handled it. Bye for now, make sure you tune in to The Game Awards on December 7th to learn when they will have it running.
Bet it shadow drops at TGA, fingers crossed its on GPU.
Really looking forward to the announcement and the arrival of the game. I do not believe that it will land on the Game Pass because the game does not require any exposure as it has that in heaps, and the game will likely sell very well once it arrives.
Going on the Game Pass is:
1. Getting money in advance in order to help with development.
2. Getting exposure for a game that might otherwise fly under the radar, and then garnering interest through word of mouth.
or
3. Enabling multiple people to play a multiplayer game, and in doing so building a community that allows the game to grow and to be played.
Ultimately, Baldur's Gate 3 does not actually need Game Pass to succeed, be noticed or need to build a community (because it already has one). Word of mouth and the reviews already out there will ensure its success...
This is great news. Definitely not a game for me but glad they worked out whatever issues they had. Hope you guys enjoy!
@BacklogBrad Don't you think the publicly blaming the hardware and causing a headache for Xbox could have been what led to MS easing up on the parity clause in the first place? There's no faster way to get a company to backtrack on a policy like a bit of good old public outrage. Besides, they had to say something as people were getting suspicious that something was going on because it had been announced for PS but not for Xbox.
I find their honesty about the situation quite refreshing and I don't think it was their intention to throw the Series S under the bus.
Plus you think they shouldn't have publicly blamed the Series S and they seem to be the only ones that have had a problem with it. If they didn't say anything then you wouldn't have known that they had a problem with it, how do you then know that there aren't other developers that have had problems but just haven't announced it publicly. You've got to ask yourself why did split screen on Halo Infinite never happen? Why does Forza Motorsport not have split screen? Purely speculation but there does seem to be a common theme developing.
It feels like we're getting news about Baldur's Gate 3 for Xbox on a near-daily basis at the moment
No kidding! You guys keep this BG3 obsession up and it will make the ABK acquisition look under reported 😉.
Well someone is milking this marketing dry. A tease of an announcement that's a postponed announcement of a later release date.
Larian are not the only ones to have issues with the S, @BacklogBrad. Indeed, neither Forza Motorsport or Halo launched with couch co-op, and those games were developed in house with all the millions that Microsoft can throw at the problems. Larian were simply honest in their statements as to why they were unable to release the game on the Xbox. Other developers have shied away from telling it as it is leaving the Xbox community to work it out for themselves. At least with Larian being open about the issue, it game Microsoft some impetuses to resolve the problem.
It's also very naïve to think that Larian alone were involved in the release date on the PlayStation. I'd put money on it that Sony paid them handsomely to have the game release on the same day as Starfield came out. PlayStation would have wanted a big release to compete with Starfield, and Larian were the obvious choice as the game had already released on the PC at the time of the announcement to great reviews. The truth of the matter is that Larian would probably not have chosen that day themselves as it meant they were competing with the release of Starfield. I'd put money on it that Sony offered them a fat cheque to persuade them otherwise.
As for the meeting with Phil Spencer, if you look back at the sequence of events, Microsoft had previously dismissed BG3 as a game worth pursuing. It was only after the stellar reviews that Microsoft came to the conclusion that it was better to drop the parity clause than miss out on the game. Did that decision happen at the meeting with Spencer? Who knows. It is more likely that the two of them sat down and thrashed out a way to get the game on the Xbox. It meant both parties compromising; Larian dropped couch co-op, and Microsoft dropped the parity clause.
As for Larian making the announcement at the Game Awards, well, that just makes sense. Larian get massive exposure. Xbox gets a win. And a huge audience are watching. It should also be remembered that the release of the game on the Xbox is not the only announcement that Larian intend to make. They are also going to announce the release of the physical version of the game. That will land on all platforms, and so making that announcement at the Game Awards makes perfect sense. So it is entirely possible that the game is ready to go for the Xbox, and that the physical release is slowing things up. Regardless, it makes sense to make as big of a splash about the release of the game as possible, and so announcing it as the Game Awards is possibly the biggest way they can do it.
Also, it's worth remembering that BG3 has been nominated for Game of the Year, and so it is also entirely possible that Geoff Keighley wants the games release announced on his show because it is massive publicity for him. It is also just possible that he has his hand involved in when the game releases because, again, publicity!
Finally, yes, there is a lot of drip feeding titbits about BG3. It is regarded as possibly the best game ever made. There is real excitement for the game on all platforms. Larian are not the only ones creating the buzz, it's coming from absolutely everywhere, and Microsoft are creating as much of a buzz for the game as they possibly can because they need people to know that the game is coming to Xbox, and not just available on their biggest rivals console...
@Lup I love your idea, but im not banking on it lol
Shadow drop yes, Game Pass dream on. Realistically they could shift another 5m units once it lands on xbox thats potentially another $250m in revenue for Larian.
Shadow drop on Gamepass would possibly be the most insane advertisement for the service possible. It would also cost way too much I imagine. Especially in this case where they can point to the sales on other platforms and predict xbox sales with relative accuracy.
