This past Friday brought us the unexpected arrival of Redfall's 2.0 update, which included the long-awaited 60FPS Performance Mode along with various other improvements to gameplay, the user interface and much more.
It's still early days for this new update, but the overall feedback has been positive so far. We've seen a lot of Xbox fans taking to social media over the weekend to share how impressed they've been with the changes:
It's great to see an improved reception for Redfall following its new patch, but the question remains as to whether it'll result in greater player numbers. So far, that doesn't really appear to be the case on Steam, where the peak player count per-day only seems to have increased from around 30 to 50. Still, it's definitely a start!
The folks over at the Redfall community on Reddit are hoping Arkane and Bethesda are willing to make even more improvements in the future, but surely that'll depend on how much of a community this new update can establish. Fingers crossed enough people will get behind the game over the coming days, weeks and months!
Have you tried the new Redfall update yet? Tell us down in the comments section below.

I know that some may say to not bother spending any time with Redfall, to let it die and focus on whatever project they have coming next, but I think it makes sense to get the game to its 'best' state, even if it doesn't add/improve Cut-scenes.
With Game Pass, it makes sense to me to get the game to its best state because it adds 'value' to the service. If Redfall is playable and much more enjoyable now, it adds to GP. Also in 3+ yrs time, you could have a lot more Subscribers who may well try it if its been patched/fixed.
I haven't returned yet, but I do plan on returning at some point.
Bad timing to launch this update though.. why release the update when everybody is playing big releases. Why not wait for a moment when people have more time to pick it up. Add some extra content in the meantime to make it more like a reset like Cyberpunk 2077.
Sorry, no interest in it. Redfall had all the issues the article mentioned, but also so many more. I doubt I’ll ever go back to it, based on the fact that the story itself was shoestringed.
I've put Redfall on cold storage post-release, waiting for a big patch to add 60 fps mode and improve gameplay.
Yesterday I got it running again, and man, it's better but still bad. Some issues have been improved, although I don't think any were completely removed. Anyway, that was my last shot with Redfall, deleted it and ain't planning on redownloading. Bigger/better games to be had on GP.
Played up to and just beyond the fire station and the improvement is plain to see. I need to play more but initial impressions are that it still seems a little bland - the dialogue, cutscenes and AI all need further work, but I’m not giving up on this yet. 60fps is a big improvement. At the very least it isn’t the embarrassment it was when it was pushed out the door half-baked.
I really don’t understand why Microsoft didn’t delay back in May and alter their release schedule to Starfield September, Redfall October (for Halloween) and Forza Motorsport early November.
2.0 the new 1.0. Personally glad i've held off on this, Cyberpunk and many other games until they were in a better state.
@Feffster @Ocat It could be 'perfect' timing for the 'Update' - with Halloween around the corner, having a patch that people were waiting for in time for Spooky season may well encourage people to jump back in or even try it for the 'first' time.
Other games maybe around - like Starfield & Forza, but are 'different' games and not very 'Halloween' games. I can see it also being on Sale for Halloween so having a '60fps' mode now may encourage more to buy or 'try' on Game Pass.
I tried at launch and I was sadly disappointed as I had huge expectations.
After the new update, lvl 10 and +8hrs in, I can tell it's a very different game, for the better. Overall it's very stable (although I had one crash, but didn't lose any progress), better weapon handling & combat, the world is more populated, I'm getting better loot (but less epics). 60fps is a must for combat heavy games like this one and they nailed it.
The AI isn't the brightest however they throw you tons of baddies which make things pretty hard sometimes.
I'll definitely be getting back for more.
Funny that they are great developers for continuing to update it. Great developers wouldn’t have released in that state.
The game was a mess on release, anyone saying otherwise is clearly living in cuckoo land and can’t stand criticism against their favourite box.
Perhaps this will redeem it some, but for many it’s far too late, the ship has sailed, 5/6months to leave it for the update was too long. It’s dropped to a handful of players on anything outside of GP.
The one update I would want is for it to be changed from having a co-op focus to a single player focus, but I can't see that happening unfortunately.
@themightyant
And then the publisher are gonna cry about the fact that they don’t earn enough money day 1, and everybody will buy the game at a point when the problems are fixed and are €20 instead of €70.
Publishers will step up there day 1 pre-order bonuses for this.
'We’re going to get it to be a good game because we know, as a first-party studio, Game Pass lives forever. There will be people ten years from now who are going to join Game Pass, and Redfall will be there.” - Pete Hines in September
For me that statement alone is enough to tell me about the motivation on this update. Think they've probably brought the score up from a 4 or 5 out of 10 to about a 6 or 7 and that would be enough for the service. Really would be surprised if they continued updating it with new content and so on.
@Spaceman-Spiff i agree with you, i want arkane to do what they do best and stick to single player games.
Hopefully the dishonored 3 rumors are right and we get a new game
@Ocat Perhaps. Or they might actually put out a game that is near finished at release.
EDIT: I think the reality is the vast majority of the gamers (the masses) don't keep up to do date with the state of a game at launch and will buy day 1, or preorder, regardless. It is only enthusiasts like us that might notice/care.
@BRT15 Hard to tell if they will keep improving it .. my thoughts they will as it was a huge mistake and they will want to get it to at least a solid 7
Completed it when It released and won't be returning...but glad to hear it's improved and is being well received
You ask will it lead to greater player numbers? The problem is they’ve released this during a very busy game period (BG3, Starfield, Cyberpunk 2.0/Phantom Liberty, AC Mirage) with still more to come (Spiderman 2, Super Mario Wonder, Lords of the fallen). I still haven’t played Redfall yet but definitely want to, I just don’t know when that will be.
I completed Redfall good game
7/10
@BAMozzy I was thinking the same thing. I love Halloween and this is perfect.
Didn't last long on redfall and always think if it takes longer to download a game than it does to give up and uninstall it then it's not a game for me. Technical issues were never it's problem!
@Nightcrawler71 Most, if not all are also very expensive to buy and/or not even on 'Xbox'. If people only have an Xbox for example, they aren't going to buy Spider Man or Mario for example. Also those games are 'different' in style/genre too so may not appeal as much - I have zero interest in BG3 or Lords of the Fallen for example.
Whilst there maybe some 'big' releases, not everyone is going to be buying at 'Launch' when games are at their most expensive and often (as was the case with Redfall) not the 'best' experience until its patched.
The point is that more and more people will inevitably end up at least trying it. Either because someone will decide its worth picking up in a sale or because they can try it on Game Pass. Maybe those who only signed up for Starfield or Forza may opt to 'try' it for Halloween - especially now they know it offers a 60fps mode and has had patches.
In 5yrs time for example, Game Pass could grow to 50m+ and Redfall could still be attracting new players willing to give it a try. How bad was Cyberpunk or No Mans Sky at launch, yet you mention Cyberpunk as a reason not to play Redfall - and yet Redfall is perhaps more in keeping with the Spooky/Halloween season we are in. Cyberpunk took years to get to the great state it appears to be in today - a game so bad, Sony refused to sell it in their store for quite a while, a game that was arguably worse than Redfall was at launch...
@Ocat
That makes no sense. There are people that paid good money to buy this game and to make those people wait even longer, when the patch is already done, just because there is a lot of other stuff out there at the moment would be inexcusable. That would be one of the single worst moves I have ever heard of from a developer, especially one that is trying to make up for a game releasing in sub par shape.
@RIghteousNixon
Agreed, you have to reward the people that bought the game and played it on GamePass day one. They were given a poor quality game and should be able to play an improved version as soon as it is ready.
They can start a marketing campaign to try and get an uptick in players at any time. They don't need a patch release event to do that.
Absolutely terrible game I played it and uninstalled it straightaway the other day no thanks I'll go back to starfield and coccon im not touching this ever again especially when there's great games on gamepass
im really digging it now. that 60 fps is great. but still no match making?
I'm replaying on a harder mode so can't tell if the AI is being aggressive or just harder because of the settings. Either way I like it. I found the game too easy on normal mode. The game has come along way since release.
The annoying "always online" is still there though.
Resumed my playthrough and I can definitely see myself finishing this. Now, if only I can find the key to that broadcast room....
I like this game significantly better than Starfailed for sure. Going back to play it again with this update.
