It's now been over a week since Mortal Kombat 1 arrived on Xbox, and we're keen to know how you're getting on with it so far! It's been four years since the last entry in the series, so there was plenty of hype for this one ahead of launch.
The reviews have been pretty great at least (aside from the Nintendo Switch version). Mortal Kombat 1 has a Metacritic score of 85 for Xbox Series X, and that includes a very positive MK1 review here at Pure Xbox.
In your personal opinion though, does it live up to expectations? How would you sum up your thoughts right now? Was it worth the money? Do you think it's better than Street Fighter 6? What improvements and DLC would like to see?
We'd love to hear your comments, so let us know down below (and give your score in the poll as well!).

Yes, absolutely. I’m loving MK1 so far. The more I play it, the more I love it too. It won’t be goty, but it’ll make my top 10 for sure. I’m liking it more than SF6 as well. It’s not a contest between the two, but it has to be said. 9/10 for me.
Better than SF6? The more thought or notion or idea is outright blasphemous
I would prefer something with less grind.
Best mortal Kombat game ever created. Before my nr1 was mk Trilogy, but this game topped it on my list. It ALMOST even topped my favorite fighting game ever. Killer instinct (xbox)
kI is nr 1
Mk1 is nr2
Sf6 nr3
Tekken nr4
MK1 gameplay is fantastic, even if it feels a little unfinished. There are some hiccups still needing fixed (the premium store is bugged and won't refresh, some QoL from 11 are missing, etc.) but those are undoubtedly coming.
In the meantime though the gameplay is better than ever, there's a TON of kontent (especially for single-player), and it's just a lot of fun.
There's no point trying to compare it to SF6 — they're radically different games with different intentions. It's like trying to compare Final Fantasy 16 to Cyberpunk — they may both be RPGs, but that's about where the similarities end. SF, MK, and Tekken all serve unique purposes and fighting game fans are riding high right now with updates from all 3 in less than 12 months.
@FenIsMightier Fair post. As a casual experience, especially single player, MK1 is probably a lot of fun. Looks really nice too, I love the visuals and character designs.
But as a fighting game? IMO nothing comes close to SF3, SF4 and SF6. They are as precise and technical as it gets, while still being extremely fun. The mechanics are amazing.
Mortal Kombat is, was and always will be better than Street Fighter 🙂
@Raffles
Street Fighter 6 looks like it was made last generation and they sat on it until just now. Mortal Kombat 1 blows it away for it's story, character designs and upcoming characters and support. SF6's TMNT content was an overpriced joke
Baby-faced Raiden is everything. That is all.
@ZuneTattooGuy And yet as a fighting game, SF6 blows it out of the water.
@Raffles
If you enjoy SF6's combat system which you clearly do. I however do not, I enjoy MK or Tekken
@ironcrow86 Only if you're an absolute casual and can't even do a fireball from the right side of the screen
Street Fighter has always been the best fighting game series since the original SF2, and still is.
@ZuneTattooGuy There's a reason why Street Fighter has always been the #1 fighter for competitive play, and tournaments. The core mechanics are the best. Precise, technical, generally well balanced, with some brilliant variety in characters and gameplay styles.
@Raffles
See I am in the firm camp of Gamers who enjoy fun and find eSports to be a cancer that is hurting gaming as a whole.
When I spent $70+ on my games I enjoy them, have a fun time with friends and family. I don't obsess and try to be the best esports player in the world. I play a wide range of games and will be moving on from MK1 as more games I want to play come out. I will revisit for each season and when the DLC characters start to launch. But again I don't obsess and gave at all about fighting game tournaments.
@Raffles who cares about a fireball when you can literally rip out someone's spine 😄....also you could give me all the time in the world and I'd maybe be able to name half dozen SF characters....gimme half hour and I could name all the MK characters....the ones that matter anyway 🙂
@ironcrow86
The newest characters in SF6 are some of the lamest additions I ever seen. MK1 has only one dud, and that's because of her voice lol. Also the new characters coming are amazing, like Omniman. SF6 got TMNT rubber suits for a silly cost
I dont think a comparison to SF6 is necessary; I like both fighting systems for what they are. And "what's better" is purely subjective. There are similarities but you cant make a 1:1 comparison IMHO. There is a lot to like about both games, and this has been a banner year for fans of fighting games with Tekken 8 still to come.
I love invasions mode. I will say I wasnt crazy about the Kameo system to start off but over time I have grown to enjoy it and better incorporate it into my strategies. There are things I like about MK11 better than this new game, but its gorgeous and Im getting my money's worth.
I'm digging the gameplay for sure and the story was a lot of fun, but it does just feel inherently unfinished. Lot of really bloated grinding that feels like it's mostly there to distract from it having nowhere near as much content at launch as 11 did when it launched.
How can MK1 be a 10? The tower aspect is shocking! They are static and offer nothing compared to previous versions. Invasions?(The Krypt variation) is a joke...looks like something from the xbox 360. And when all events offer "koins" as appose to fatalities and items, the "Shrine" when given 32,000...offered me 22 pieces of concept art as rewards. I have played TShang Tsung and have over 600 kills...and yet I still not earned another fatality, and have 3 colours of the same outfit...I mean wtf. A lot of the moves like for Scorpion and SubZero have hardly changed at all. Yes the game looks quite good on the surface...but when you finish the story...the rest if dross to me.
I've not manged to play either of these games yet, but I'm still interested in both...
Traditionally I've been more of a street fighter fan, but I have to say MK1is looking hot!
@ZuneTattooGuy I'm no fan of eSports, but I'm talking about the Street Fighter tournament scene that predates eSports by 20 years, including the epic Daigo Vs JWong showdown in 3rd Strike etc.
There is a reason why Street Fighter is always the main event at evo - it's the best fighting game there is, on a technical/mechanical level.
@ZuneTattooGuy The MK character design is great. I love the look of the characters and some of their moves, especially finishing moves obviously.
But in terms of the mechanics, they are too similar. The variety of playstyles in Street Fighter is staggering - so many different normals, specials, supers, different forms of zoning and rushdown, all while being very balanced and having great matchups.
Also even though I like USF4 has the best roster by far, of any Street Fighter, I quite like some of the new characters in SF6. Certainly more than SF5. Manon, Kimberly, Jamie and JP are all good. As far as classic characters, DeeJay, Blanka, Honda are all superb in this game. Dhalsim is also pretty good. Design wise Ken is horrible, but gameplay wise he is incredible. The ultimate rushdown.
I like Street Fighter because of the gameplay, mechanics, and satisfaction of pulling off great sequences.
No other fighting game compares with the feeling of doing a string of parries in SF3 and then unleashing a Super, or in SF4 doing a cross up into jab jab CMK Superb, or with Balrog getting a jump in into crouching jab x 3, headbutt into Ultra.
The input requirements are high compared to other fighting games, including 1 frame links in SF4 and even stuff that's taken for granted like SRK > FADC > Ultra, it's hard to pull. But when you master Street Fighter the core gameplay has a level of satisfaction and engagement far beyond any other fighting game imo.
As far as 2d (2.5d) fighters go, Killer Instinct is the only one that comes close for me. That game is underrated, and I'd love to see a sequel.
@ironcrow86 Well exactly, the moves in MK are fun in an OTT way, that's why I said it's great as a casual fighter. The cinematics are unmatched.
But as opposed to a technical fighter with bags of depth, it's more of a party game like Smash Bros, only ultra violent
