The FTC has just lost its case to block Microsoft's Activision Blizzard purchase, and company executives are already out there on the internet, reacting to the news and providing statements on the matter.
One of those execs is Xbox boss Phil Spencer, who has released a multi-post Twitter thread speaking about his gratefulness towards the court's speedy decision. We've gathered all three parts of Phil's post in the quote down below:
"We're grateful to the court for swiftly deciding in our favor. The evidence showed the Activision Blizzard deal is good for the industry and the FTC’s claims about console switching, multi-game subscription services, and cloud don’t reflect the realities of the gaming market.
Since we first announced this deal, our commitment to bringing more games to more people on more devices has only grown. We’ve signed multiple agreements to make Activision Blizzard’s games, Xbox first party games and Game Pass all available to more players than they are today.
We know that players around the world have been watching this case closely and I’m proud of our efforts to expand player access and choice throughout this journey."
This decision against the FTC certainly feels like we're moving one step closer to Xbox's ActiBlizz purchase actually going through, but it's not a done deal for now. The UK CMA has blocked the merger — a decision that is still being fought against by Microsoft — while Xbox still has to move to get the deal passed in the U.S. following this whole FTC saga. Let's see what happens next!

Phil should say this trial was a waste of time and American taxpayers money. Screw playing nice at this point.

@Kaloudz the CMA has little case. But in their defense they did say they approved the console side of the deal but not cloud gaming. So they and MS need to work on the cloud side of it and then they should fold like a cheap tent and the deal is done. But if i was MS i would still be on the phone looking for more deals to make. Not of this size of course. But continue to put the games first and not feel as if you have enough or too many. Sony is going to continue their quest of trying to lock up games on their platform. We know this.
@HonestHick And Sony will still get COD of PlayStation, but i think on potentially worse terms now because they wouldn't take the deal.
Let’s gooo Ubisoft next please
We can finally go back to the wonderful speculation of potential studio projects/collabs/crossovers instead of if this deal ever actually happens. I want a collection of all COD zombie maps on gamepass or a Gears of War 3rd person zombie map.
@J_Mo_Money no MS has to honor what they agreed to in court. They have to follow all the right steps to honor their end of the deal. This won’t be the last studio MS buys. So they can’t burn bridges hours or day’s after completing the largest buy out in gaming history. 😊
@Kaloudz correct. The CMA has no chance. They can continue to force an issue, but they only stand to lose money and look foolish in the process. Something i would think they have more pride than sense to do.
@HonestHick I didn't say they wouldn't put it on PlayStation, but that 10 year deal is off the table. except some repercussions for the headache.
@J_Mo_Money we shall see. MS needs COD on PS and PS needs COD. So this deal will get signed pretty quick.
@HonestHick i fully expect some exclusive "content" on the xbox side (no missions or modes) but maybe them xmas skins!
@HonestHick Did you change your user name? @Kaloudz @J_Mo_Money Can you imagine that telephone call, "Phil, ehm, it's me..., ehm... Jim... ehm, do you remember that 10-year contract... ehm, could you please send it back...?"
@Banjo- Jim Ryan went full otaku, never go full otaku.
Sony and Microsoft...uhm..diehards (being nice) have been fighting tooth and nail over this whole acquisition.
Head over to NintendoLife and they are just happy that Call of Duty is now closer to returning to Nintendo consoles.
@Banjo- yeah i thought I tagged you when i changed my name. Sorry for the confusion buddy. 😊
@J_Mo_Money could be, i mean once Sony’s marketing rights deal is over, i would expect MS to try and leverage in a little advantage to be on Xbox.
@Kaloudz imagine game pass catalog with Ubisoft and sega ! I would have game pass forever
Now that it's over because the CMA's argument about Xbox Cloud is false as proven by everyone involved, I honestly think that we should celebrate this for three reasons. Firstly, Microsoft is behind Sony in this industry so it's fair for them to grow. Secondly, Microsoft's games are available day one on several platforms and services with consumer-friendly policies unlike Sony's. Last but not least, ABK wanted to be acquired and had contacted other giants before Microsoft showed interest. With Microsoft, ABK employees will be happier. ABK wanted to be acquired and the company was in the middle of an internal crisis. Those that didn't want this acquisition to succeed only had one of these reasons: to keep Sony's dominance and exclusion deals with ABK games such as Call of Duty DLC in the past, to keep Xbox behind and Sony ahead or ABK to stay stuck on that internal crisis that affected the employees. The latter is very unlikely.
@HonestHick The profile picture helped me and I knew you were not the other guy because he has the picture downwards 😁.
As much as I love seeing Jim Ryan cry, AND I DO, the thought of MS merging with ActiBlizz is just gross.
Okay, that was more a way to make you read my comment in the Dr. Evil voice than anything, but this does set a not so good precedent.
I know both sony and Microsoft have their own miss and wins but personally I feel I cannot respect this company at all , puchasing an entire company of very well known and positioned games to compete in the market because either they dont know or cant do games is dissapointing to my eyes. I know you will say bad things about Sony too but I’m not talking about gaming here Im talking about the way this compnay is moving throught the business, to me it feels cheap, fake, or plastic I dont know. Dont get me wrong, I dont have sides in this “war” but in a way I feel a bit dissapointed I would much rather prefer for MS to produce very unique games but unfortunately is not the case, they have to purchase them.
@Qu1n0n3z Sony acquired their studios in the same way, they were not a video games company. They just developed a CD add-on for SNES and then asked so much on top of what was discussed already that Nintendo said no and Sony made their own console. Then they started buying studios and, more recently, paying third parties to exclude Xbox. Both Sony and Microsoft have bought studios but the difference is that Sony is still ahead.
ABK was looking for buyers and was in an internal crisis, that's why Microsoft acquired them. Microsoft had to pay more than what the company is worth. The following article explains the process perfectly. If you read it, you'll see that it's possible that Sony (company names are not revealed) stepped in to stop the acquisition on 3rd December 2021.
https://www.gamespot.com/articles/multiple-companies-wanted-to-buy-activision-blizzard-before-microsoft/1100-6500900/
This acquisition is like when Mojang was acquired. Markus Persson asked on Twitter who wanted to buy his company and Microsoft accepted. Bethesda was also interested in being part of Microsoft in order to have bigger budgets and more development time.
Expect Microsoft to buy SEGA or CD Projekt Red next.
The consolidation continues.
Get 3 years of gamepass now before the inevitable price hike using the Xbox Gold method.
@Banjo- Thanks for the article, Ill take a look and I totally understand that everyone in all the business around the world do that (buying other companies to grow) but to be honest I wouldnt feel the way I feel if MS were good at actually doing more at a production level, but lately (past 3 years) I havent heard anything from them . I hope this acquisition means that not only they will add those games to game pass but to shake them in a good way and produce more quality things and not only sleep on it.
@Qu1n0n3z It looks like the studios will have the chance to do things other than supporting Call of Duty development and that means Spyro, Crash, Tony Hawk's and others IPs, hopefully. Microsoft has had more new games than Sony this year and things will only improve from now on with Zenimax and ABK.
