Over the weekend, we spotted that Starfield's Twitter page was updated with a brand-new ESRB rating ahead of the game's September 2023 launch. As was expected, the game has been rated 'M' for Mature in the US, and now the official description has revealed some, err... juicy details about the reasons behind the rating.
There's your usual array of violence-related notes here like using "futuristic guns, lasers, axes, and explosives to kill enemies", but there's also some rather revealing sexual content which the ESRB describes as "suggestive material". Here are a few examples of 'suggestive' Starfield dialogue provided by the ratings board:
"Life is a sexually transmitted disease that's a hundred percent fatal"
"I'm all for getting a little wild, but next time let's try it without the jetpacks"
"Talk about seeing stars, whew… that was amazing."
Well, it sounds like you can get your freak on in Starfield anyway - so there's that box ticked! We'll be exploring all of this when the game launches of course, to err... you know, experience all that Starfield has to offer.
Speaking of which, we should be treated to a real good look at the game in just a few short weeks. Bethesda's Starfield Direct event follows the big Xbox Games Showcase this summer, with both taking place on June 11th, 2023. Just probably don't expect jetpack sex to be the main feature of next month's showcase unless Bethesda Game Studios is feeling particularly saucy.
Will you be exploring every Starfield nook and cranny come September 6th? Keep it clean down in the comments section below.

oh im already excited for starfield, i just hope the media doesn't try to use the game for views and to please PS fanboys with all the negative articles and videos, and i hope the game doesnt have minimum bugs because if your a xbox studio expect automatic hate
I'm really wondering how that first quote is in any way a factor in ESRB rating. It's not suggestive, nude, violent, or anything beyond saying "sexually transmitted disease." Is virology age gated now? That's medical content, not sex content. Strange world...
@TakeItEasy The media is poison. The internet turned all media, even the "serious" news outlets into mere tabloids. It exists to make money, money is made generating traffic, traffic is generated by sensationalism and playing to the base. So long as gamers are brand loyal and passionate and PS gamers outnumber XB gamers, the easy media money will always be to be sensationally critical of anything XB and let the clicks roll in.
Same with Mac vs PC, Android vs iOS, Democrat vs Republican, Coke vs Pepsi, basically anything popular enough to have two camps, divide, conquer, and cash the check. It's what media exists for.
@SplooshDmg You have a difficult decision now. Team blue gets you Metal Gear Erotic Violence F2P mobile pachinko, and team green gets you "jetpack sex". You must choose only one.
I mean if they didn't add it modders were going to add it anyway like Skyrim and Fallout 4. This game is massive is going to be an understatement. I hope I'm not wrong and Bethesda this time give us a proper settlement building and management system unlike Fallout 4. I'm beyond excited for Starfield.
@NEStalgia Yeah, but what about Team Steam? That'll land you right into 'SEX with HITLER'. This is an actual series of games. No, I'm not kidding. No, I don't own them. Lol
@SplooshDmg hentai games containing Nazis are distressingly abundant on Steam 🤣
Jetpack sex is positively wholesome by comparison.
@Markatron84 @SplooshDmg well, that's a thing.....
Why do I internet?
@NEStalgia You internet for the same reason I internet. Leaving the house is just an insurance claim waiting to happen. It's safer in here, and arguably less expensive.
Okay? I didn’t expect to ever see that sub heading 🤣
@Markatron84 What? 🤣🤣
@SplooshDmg Got it in one.
@SplooshDmg yet often equally traumatising.
@NEStalgia @Fenbops hey, they exist. I never said they weren't distressing 🤣
@Markatron84 Who's traumatized? I'm certainly not traumatized. I'm a grade A weirdo.
@SplooshDmg @Markatron84 And how we know how MS can win the console war. And we know that Randy Pitchford should replace Phil. 🤣
@NEStalgia 100% Randy Pitchford plays Steam hentai games.
@Markatron84 Whoa, hey now. Why we gotta bring Randy Pitchford into this? Plenty of perfectly respectable weirdos play hentai games on Steam. Not like... The other Randy Pitchford-type weirdos.
@SplooshDmg Yeah, perfectly normal people like Bobby Kotick also do.
@NEStalgia I always took Kotick as more of a Leisure Suit Larry kinda guy.
My reaction upon reading the subheader. “Come again?” is probably a poor choice of words though 😂
@SplooshDmg I though Bobby WAS Leisure Suit Larry.
@NEStalgia I think you owe Leisure Suit Larry an apology.
@SplooshDmg Further replies have been rated ESRB AO for explicit Kotick related imagery or depictions.
@Stormageddon They could be more 'Skyrim/Fallout' in-game Purchases - like Mods for example. Bethesda games are very 'big' in the modding community and I think the first company to bring 'mods' to Console.
Combine that with '1000's' of Planets you can potentially explore and/or Mod and all the Cosmetics (Ships, ship parts, outfits, weapon skins etc etc), I would expect some 'in-game' purchases as well as potential 'expansion' packs which are also 'in-game' purchases as you need the 'base' game to play.
I expect Forza Motorsport to have 'in-game' purchases too - like GT7 as they have always offered 'more' cars etc after launch too. Hopefully they 'balance' the cost better than GT7 - but its almost expected these days. As long as you get a decent amount of content for the 'Price', isn't too 'grindy' to force you buy extras and extras are 'purely' optional, its not really too much of an issue...
Wish Jetpack sex was an actual thing. It would make it much easier that’s for sure! lol.
is the chick in the pic in any minigames in starfield?
