Redfall is a little over a week away at this point, and ahead of its May 2nd launch on Xbox Game Pass, outlet IGN has dropped a final preview detailing all things solo and co-op gameplay.
Co-op is clearly the focus for large parts of this preview though, with the majority of IGN's gameplay showing a team of vampire slayers taking out the big baddies of Redfall. We're treated to lots of new footage here, including plenty of boss fights and procedurally generated skirmishes along the way.
While all manner of scenarios are shared across both solo and the various forms of co-op play in Redfall, IGN notes distinct differences between each mode of play. As probably expected, the chaos grows as more players are introduced.

"With only one other person on the adventure, more often than not I felt like we were partner detectives. Redfall stands still in the moment the vampires attacked; homes are a mess as people evacuated and battlegrounds of warring cults are host to corpses with stories of their own."
"The four-player co-op dynamic is as chaotic as you'd imagine it, though it was also easy to pair off and approach objectives creatively. I'd team up with Layla and use our abilities to race our waypoint then boldly jump into a battleground knowing my team had my back. I especially enjoyed beating a teammate to a kill shot but was equally pleased when someone finished off a kill as I was trying to reload."
While much of this preview looks at the dynamics of co-op Redfall, the previewer notes that when going hands on with the final game next month, they'll probably have two separate saves active at once - for solo and online play.
"My time did confirm that when Redfall is out on May 2 I'll want to have multiple instances going; a solo playthrough so I can explore corners and read notes to my heart's content, and at least one instance of a co-op game so I can learn more about all the characters. I'm still unsure about who I want to play, but I know at the very least I'm going to have a good time staking vampires."
Despite the lack of a performance mode available on day one, we're still very excited for Arkane's next game. The team is certainly capable of delivering a banger - we just hope Redfall turns out to be one when it hits Xbox Game Pass next week.
So, solo or co-op for your first Redfall playthrough? Let us know which vampire-slaying road you'll be taking in the comments section!

Really looking forward to reading the reviews for this one. Though I’m not expecting it to be quite as good as Deathloop.
Soooo, am I dumb or is the title misleading? Because the two "modes of play" referenced here are 2 player co-op versus 4 player co-op.
Nothing was said about single player.
Hoping it’s not too long to wait for the 60fps fix.

The other quote is 2 vs 4 because I wanted to show that there are differences there too. The video discusses all modes of play!
Been trying to figure out what this game is most alike to and after watching this preview, I'm going to settle on Borderlands.
I am curious to see what the reviews are like for it but I assume the console review is going to be brutal for obvious reasons. Hopefully the gameplay loop makes up for it.
I will probably do a solo playthrough first and if I enjoy it then focus on co op. I'm hyped for this one though.
@Kaloudz Xbox is sending this out to die. Not wanting it that way but this game has had nothing but bad press and then shipping it while missing features is just a terrible look.
I am hoping that the wife and I enjoy this one. We’re going to co-op it with her playing the Xbone and me playing on the Series S and I may invite friends in on it. We haven’t played a co-op game in a while, so I’m looking forward to it. Still have no idea if the game will be good or not because Xbox hasn’t worked very hard to let us know if it’s great, but, eh, it’s Arkane, so at the very least it should have great set pieces.
@kaloudz I’m genuinely curious how this game is going to be perceived. On one hand, you’ve got Arkane’s reputation and the fact that this is the first big Xbox exclusive since Infinite. On that same hand, there was some really positive impression on the preview. On the other hand though, the game has been trashed by the community since announcement for the most part, some people are extremely upset about the fps being only 30, and, uh, honestly Xbox hasn’t really said anything about the game and some of these videos we’ve gotten have actively made the game look bad. It’s really concerning that Xbox is just putting out this game in two weeks, just being all blasé and cavalier about it. It’s like Xbox is too focused on the summer presentation to market this properly or they’re literally tossing it out there to see what happens. I can’t tell if they have faith in the game or if they simply don’t know how to build up excitement in it.
I'm really looking forward to this game. Hope it's awesome.
I'll be playing solo but might have a couple of games going on at the same time with different characters to try and play the same levels with different tactics.
From what I've seen so far, it looks great and atmospheric and don't understand the negativity, especially to the graphics.
30 fps has never bothered me personally so will be playing day one.
I did solo with Jacob during my time with the game and I had so much fun!
There were a couple of moments where it seemed like I was at a significant disadvantage, but I chalked that up to whatever dynamic algorithms are being run still requiring balancing to better suit solo play: basically, I got ambushed by more than I could handle on some rare occasions.
@somnambulance So, will your wife be using Cloud to play from Xbox One? I think this game is Series X|S, PC, and Cloud only.
Despite all the negative press recently and a lot of it unjustified, I will be playing this as it looks great to me. The only issue I may have is that I ordered the new Zelda game. By the time I play I may get the performance mode.
I'm going to give it a go on single player mode, hopefully it has difficulty options
@GamingFan4Lyf We’ll probably both play with xCloud. It’s so darn convenient to use xCloud.
Definitely looks good imo. Just wish I had friends who owned an Xbox, or played games for that matter 🤣

I guess? Iunno
@Kaloudz
As has been the case with all of Arcane's games...
Looks great to me. I absolutely love Arcane. One of the most underrated developers out there imo. I wont be getting around to this till the fall as work keeps me too busy during the summer months. Hopefully by then the 60fps option will be available.
@clvr I think he (Ryan from IGN) was playing four 4 hours this time, and he had 0, 1, 2, then 3 coop partners.
Exactly as I expected/predicted it would be...
I said weeks ago that playing Solo would be very much more a 'Horror Survival' experience. Much Slower paced as you 'creep' and/or stealth your way around, trying to avoid or at least not attract a group or a very strong enemy to attack you.
Co-op is always going to be 'less' horror and 'less' Survival and more 'action'. It's not as scary knowing you have friends to back you up, give you support, heals, etc, split the focus of enemies - they are 'not' always focussed on you, more firepower and more 'skills', less need to creep etc so the game-play is likely to be quite different...
@BrilliantBill I dunno. Deathloop was marketed into oblivion, to the point where Deathloop trailers were considered a meme. Regardless of anything, everyone knew about Deathloop and what it was. I’m hoping Xbox decides advertising one of their games this year. Minecraft and Redfall are coming in like a gust of breeze. Hi-Fi Rush is the only Xbox game that had any buzz to it since Infinite.
This game didn't really catch my eye until I realized the past few days it's not a vampire version of left 4 dead like I initially thought, now it has me fairly hyped knowing it's an open world game with a story line. Will most definitely be giving it a try after I'm done slaying zombies in dead island 2.
