Ahead of God of War Ragnarok's PS5 launch, Xbox exec Aaron Greenberg popped up on Twitter last week to express his excitement about playing Sony's latest exclusive title. This is a typical sight for an Xbox exec at this point; the team is open and honest about what they're playing! Well, now that the game is out there in the wild, the boss himself has chimed in on things.
Yep, Xbox's Phil Spencer has also taken to the social media platform to congratulate Sony Santa Monica (and specifically Producer Cory Barlog) on the game's release, along with its incredible reception of course.
It seems Phil hasn't found the time to get stuck into Ragnarok yet; hopefully he's busy working on Xbox stuff for us all to enjoy! Either way, it looks like the new God of War is top of Phil's priority list when he does get time to sit down and play some games.
Have you tried the new God of War yet? If not, are you excited to try it? Let us know down below!

Such dam fun, this stuff from Phil 😂😂😂
He should ask Sony to be able to play God of War on Xbox in order to reach more players.
@GunValkyrian this, exactly. I know it’s not the popular sentiment, but it’s tone deaf in yet another year where Xbox gamers get no 1st party AAA games to play.
Phill best deliver next year 2023.
Not a world on the big 3 releases dates all supposed to be arriving by the end of June 2023.
Redfall, FH & Starfield. Let’s see if they manage that.
Back in the Xbox360 and even Xbox one days Microsoft would have countered GOWR with its own big November release etc. All organised and well managed.
Now they just advertise how great Sony are 😂😂😂
Tbh his always done this, I'm sure his intentions are true, and kudos to him if so, appreciation of the craft. It's not about Sony, it's about appreciating talented work. And GOW is very much that.
@Banjo- @Banjo- The game is on ps4 and ps5 with a more than likely pc port on the way.
Love to see it. Reality is these guys are both industry professionals who get along and know, far more than most, what an achievement it is to get a game out of this quality. Good vibes all round. Classy as ever Phil.
@EliJapan Santa Monica were made by sony so it's only natural their games would be exclusive. This has nothing to do with the Activision deal, Phil has been complementing sony and various other studios even before the Activision deal got announced.
@EliJapan he congratulated sony in 2015 over the success of Bloodbourne selling a million copies in its first month.
Lol some of you guys sound like you're watching your favorite fighter get his brains beat out. "No this is all part of the strategy! He's letting the other guy tire himself out, you'll see!"
It's fine i guess, but this would be easier to accept if we were playing Starfield...or any of the multitude of games that Microsoft has promised but not delivered. 2 games. They have successfully released TWO games this generation, and one of THOSE was a year late. I love my xbox, but I'm not going to spend this generation applauding Sony for releasing games, while hoping Microsoft manages to put SOMETHING out.
@UltimateOtaku91 Cmon man, he clearly knew they were going to buy Activision 7 years later and was setting it up then. end sarcasm font
Like I said last time they look forward to Sony games more than their own 🤣 I’m fed up of them praising Sonys games with non of their own, it looks sad.
Really it’s not about Phill saying well done or the Activision deal.
The real grief is Xbox has given no big AAA from their studios for a whole year and so far we have not one date for anything next year.
That’s the issue with Xbox at the minute and Phil and it grieves Xbox owners Phil congratulating others on what a great job they done.
When I guess they feel he should have done great job with his studios and game releases.
Never mind all keep bashing Phil maybe he does deserve some grief, I will be playing GOWR by tomorrow night.
@CoffeeFueled Bruh you can't be serious?
@grumpypotato I really think if that happens ( which I doubt ) Satya Nadella will spend huge amounts to annoy Sony and tell Phil no more Mr nice guy
@Dr_Luigi Whilst I do understand your frustration, Xbox owned Studios have probably released MORE games in the past 3yrs than Sony First Party has - not counting 'ports' of PS4 games like GoT, LoU etc as they are NOT new games. Admittedly, not all were 'exclusive' or even released on Xbox Consoles yet, although both Deathloop and Ghostwire are available on PC. Games like Psychonauts 2 and Minecraft Dungeons count as 'Xbox' games too as does Grounded and the upcoming Pentiment - even if they aren't AAA sized games and/or been in Early Access. Also we had Gears Tactics, FH5, HI etc too.
Since E3 2018 when Xbox Studio's expanded with 5 new Studios joining, the only Studios to NOT release something have been Turn 10 (last released Forza in 2017), Initiative (brand new studio) and Compulsion (last released We Happy Few in 2018 - just before joining Xbox). Playground have released 2 Forza Horizon games, Ninja Theory released Bleeding Edge, Undead Labs released SoD2, InXile released Wastelands 3 and DLC, Obsidian released Outer Worlds, DLC, Grounded and Pentiment, Double Fine released Psychonauts 2, Coalition released Hivebusters, Gears Tactics and helped develop UE5 and Matrix demo, Rare have continued adding DLC to SoT and grown that massively, 343 have released Halo Infinite. Mojang have released Minecraft Dungeons with Minecraft Legends coming up next year and continued to add DLC to Minecraft.
Zenimax haven't been with MS for 2 years yet, but most of the Studio's have released 'something' in the past 2-3yrs - Wolfenstein Youngblood, Doom Eternal, Deathloop, Ghostwire Tokyo, ESO DLC expansions, Fallout 76 expansions and have Redfall and Starfield coming soon.
As I said, Xbox Studio's have released a LOT of games in recent years - just not all have been AAA 'exclusives' but they have still 'released' whilst an 'Xbox' owned Studio. So Sony had a few 'extra' exclusives in 2022 and could be another 5yrs before Guerilla, Sony Santa Monica or Polyphony release anything as games take time to make...
I see NOTHING wrong with aa Gamer, regardless of whether they are head of Xbox or not, looking forward to playing any game - even exclusives on their nearest rival hardware and/or giving the devs the respect they deserve. In my opinion, Gamers should be 'united', not divided...
I would rather see Microsoft release a successful title this generation.
I've played a few hours so far and it's great so far but at the moment it's competing with Sonic Frontiers for my attention and I think I'll finish that first
@CoffeeFueled Sony didn't spend 70 billion acquiring the studio that owns the IP to have it as an exclusive & it's never been a multiplatform title lol these comparisons are really reaching
@BAMozzy Darn it, how many times have I told you stop making sense!? LOL!
Xbox isn't just a plastic box that sits under your TV anymore. Xbox is Microsoft's gaming ecosystem.
@Dr_Luigi cut it out they have great games or they wouldn't be in the gaming market all this time. Not every game has to be single player narrative.
Does my head in that Phil always takes the high ground, loves all games and supports competing studios. Meanwhile competitors (mainly Sony) would rather Stab him in the back rather than look at him, while also treating there own customers like 🗑. It's time he got tough. But I'm so glad we have a gamer in charge.
Phil is always doing this. Usually to wide applause from the Xbox community who take it as a badge that they’re so much morally better than PlayStations fanbase.
And it’s all very well having the head of Xbox praising every single number 1 selling PlayStation exclusive this year…if you’re supporting your own platform with AAAs that are getting equally applauded. Only, 2022 Xbox install base has been offered zero first party AAA support…let alone ones that are reaching number 1 in the charts time after time after time…
Said it before, say it again, it’s effortless to be humble from last place.
Personally, I want to keep hearing congratulations…but I want it followed by it inspiring them to make their own bangers. That they want to compete and take first place. There has to be some bite there too.
@BAMozzy most of the games your talking about are from the last 2 years. This year has been very quiet as some of the big games have been delayed. Hopefully that means next year should be very good though... especially if we get some activision and blizzard games on game pass.
@Bleachedsmiles @Dr_Luigi they have bangers maybe it's not your type of bangers but it's there lol bangers are only single player narrative games ? Like come on ppl.
He spends more time thanking the competition than he does his own studios.
@Fenbops Phil has to look forward to Playstation for any new games to play. That is so sad.
@GamingFan4Lyf I know - but some people need reminding that Xbox have released a LOT of games in the past few years - I didn't even mention Age of Empires IV or MS Flight Simulator - a Franchise older than Sony Playstation btw.
The Xbox Console is NOT the entire Xbox ecosystem at all - unlike Sony's Playstation which is their 'entire' ecosystem. I know they release some games to PC now, but those are like EA releasing their game on Xbox to play in the Xbox ecosystem and you can't go from playing God of War on PS4/5 and carry on on PC with your PS progress - because its a different Ecosystem. I can play Forza Horizon 5 on my console, switch to PC and carry on playing, then carry on playing on mobile too because its all part of the same ecosystem.
Some people are so 'blinkered' that they only see the Console and only see AAA 'exclusives' as releases to be counted in some 'top trumps' battle. Sony had 'X' games in a 'calendar' year so 'win' 2022 and Xbox needs to release 'games' - whether ready or not, just to compete.
How about looking at a year from E3 to E3 instead of Jan 01-Dec 31st and things look much better for Xbox than for Sony. E3 2021 to 2022 saw Sony release Horizon and GT7, Xbox released Psychonauts 2, MSFS, HI, FH5, Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo -and between E3 2022 and E3 2023, Sony release GoW: R and Xbox are expected to release Grounded, Pentiment, Minecraft Legends, Forza Motorsport, Starfield and Redfall - as well as release Xbox ports of Deathloop and Ghostwire too. In a 'two year cycle, MS could release a LOT more games than Sony first Party over the same period - it just so happens that Sony's arrived in 2022 and Xbox games arrived at the end of 21 and early 23...
Point is, it may well of been a 'difficult' 2022 for MS to get their games out - having released quite a lot in 2021 compared to a 'few' from Sony (only R&C and Returnal - although Returnal wasn't made by a first party studio as they 'joined' Sony after release - but still counting it). Where was Sony games between R&C and H:FW - relying on 3rd Party 'exclusives' (like Deathloop and Ghostwire from Xbox owned Studios) and Ports to PS5 releases - like FH4, Gears 5 got Series Ports but without needing to 'release' a separate disc and/or charge extra for like Sony did.
Point is, MS released more games between E3 2021 and dec 31st 21 that they actually have released more games than Sony first party has since PS5 launched - just not all of them were exclusive or even released on Xbox consoles (although you can play on PC). Sony still haven't caught up to MS yet despite them releasing 3 games in 2022.
@Evil_MC I know - that's the point. Sony didn't release a LOT in 2021 that was 'new' from their own studios - just R&C and Returnal - everything else was made by third party studio's or ports of old games 're-released' on PS5 where as MS ports are free upgrades and don't need a separate release.
The point I was trying to make is that whilst Sony may of released 3 games this year (H:FW, GT7 and now GoW:R), add on R&C, Returnal from 2021, then compare to the list of games MS owned studios released, Sonys are more spread out but fewer than MS's.
I could be more 'understanding' if MS had not released so many games in 2021 - they could of delayed H:I and/or FH5 into 2022 - delayed by 2-3months and then the argument about the 'calendar' year is irrelevant - especially with Pentiment, Grounded and of course Deathloop all 'releasing' to Xbox this year too and shipped Ghostwire to PC/PS5. If you compare with 2021, Sony's R&C and Returnal still don't outnumber MSFS, Psychonauts 2, Deathloop (PC/PS5).
All I am saying is that Xbox haven't released 'nothing' in the past couple of years and have released 'more' than Sony has in the same time. Games take 'years' to develop so don't expect Guerilla, Santa Monica or Polyphony to have anything 'new' for Sony for a 4 or 5 years. What has Sony got coming up 'next' - Maybe Spider-Man 2 or a Last of Us multiplayer.
Grass isn't 'greener' on the other side even if they have had a 'decent' year. Xbox has released more, albeit not always 'exclusive' or on their own Console (yet) and have more coming in the first half of 2023 than Sony have released since E3 2021, let alone all those games MS released in 2021...
@BAMozzy to be honest I've still got to much to play through with other new games coming to game pass. Old and new releases. So I'm not fussed. All I care about is good games coming to GP. I'm still playing mad max I got using some rewards points. A game would have to be pretty amazing for me to pay for it now. I'm happy with GP content.
Also, Business years don't start on Jan 01st, MS's financial year isn't jan1st to Dec 31st. Point is, MS have released games in EVERY year (inc 2022), and especially EVERY Financial year of this Current Generation.
OK so most of Xbox 1st Party 'Console' games released 'early' in their last Financial year (July 21-Dec21 with only Ghostwire in the last half of their year (Jan22 - Jun 22), and this 'financial' year, its pretty light in the first Half (Pentiment, Grounded and Deathloop) with a more packed second half (Currently 'planned' to release Starfield, Redfall, Minecraft Legends, Forza Motorsport and Ghostwire) in the second half.
In the 'same 'time' frame, Sony will have released Horizon: Forbidden West and GT7 in the 21-22 Financial year and God of War in the 22-23 Financial year 3 'new' first Party games (which of course have been bulked out with 'ports' of old games) in 2 Financial years...
@Evil_MC I wasn't having a dig at you, I just hope that some of the information reaches those who seem to be constantly having a go at Xbox for a 'perceived' lack of releases despite actually releasing a 'Lot' of games over the past couple of years.
As a GP subscriber myself, I don't really care whether the games are AAA First Party Exclusives or 3rd Party multi-platform games. I can only play 1 game at a time and as long as there is a consistent supply of good games to play, its still worth it. I don't buy a game just because its exclusive either, its just 'another' option that for 'reasons' was restricted to a specific platform so I have NO choice on where I want to play. At least with Multi-platform, I can choose to play on PC, PS5 or XSX.
I have never been stuck for something to play - even before I subbed to Game Pass. There was always something 'new' coming soon and lots of 'old' games to finish, some to even start, that I don't have enough hours in a day to play all so I couldn't care less if a game or 2 is delayed and now MS doesn't have a AAA big budget Xbox 'Console' Exclusive releasing in 2022, there has still been a LOT of new games on Xbox to play, lot of great games on Game Pass to play and those games are still coming 'soon' - they weren't cancelled...
Some people (not accusing you here) are so blinkered that I hope to open their eyes to the truth, the reality through my replies to people like yourself. Again, its not always information just for the recipient, but hopefully others will read it and benefit from the info too...
I wish players were less tribalism about their consoles. Yes, this year has been lacking on first party exclusives, Sony would also have had a terrible year had their top two games not been forced to be delayed. Both GoW and Horizon were expected to come last year.
Anyways, it’s a very classy thing to celebrate gaming even when it’s your competitor. Stop being so tribal!
@armondo36 wow how impatient just wait till spring 2023 at least red fall and forza are coming in less then half a year from now. On top of that you got scorn, high on life, with some 1st day realese on gamepass like a plague tale was day 1 this October and enjoyed not paying 50$ for it only the 10$ required for it and 198 more titles

Well looky here, another PS first party banger and another congratulatory tweet from Mr.nice guy Phill spencer, this has become irritating af.
Last year PS didn't have anything either and Switch only has a few AAA exclusives that aren't Wii U ports after almost six years. Xbox Game Studios are taking their time with the new games and some people are getting impatient, but I prefer that than rushing projects. There must be amazing titles in development at the moment, some of them we don't even know anything about. That said, something's wrong with The Initiative and someone should sort it out.
In regard to release dates, better not saying anything than saying 2021 like Sony and then delaying all the games.
@CoffeeFueled Sony’s exclusives are a bit different to just buying up major publishers to get their IP’s and call them exclusive.
@CoffeeFueled Considering Starfield is not coming to PS then as ever Phi is being a hypocrite.
@Banjo- if Microsoft can blame COVID for delays then why can't Sony lol
Where is the game you announced 2 years ago and not heard anything since. You know that game that was different from the other stuff you put out. Think it's called State of Decay 3. Seriously WTF. How can you release a trailer two years ago and not say anything since except. "We are working on it" atleast just a little tease of new features or even just a screenshot of a map. Please.
@Martsmall Yes. If somehow it was blocked and they couldn't sue the organizations to get passed it. I have a strong feeling MS would take a fraction of the $70 billion sitting on the table, and timed-exclusive the hell out of the industry. Fight Sony's way. The rest could buy more studios.
@theduckofdeath I like the sound of that. Give Sony a taste of their own medicine haha
Removed - trolling/baiting
@EliJapan it’s a bit different. Sony bought certain devs, employed certain staff, invested massively in these devs and made them incredible. Microsoft are simply throwing their cash about and buying all ready well established devs. If Microsoft made lets say COD Xbox exclusive, i know they’ve said they won’t do this, but if they did they’ll have had zero input in to the creation of COD. They’ll have simply monopolised an already huge franchise. I do hope the deal goes thro an if it does an COD goes to Game Pass that’s where i’ll play in future. I do think it would be wrong to make it exclusive tho, not everyone can afford 2 current gen consoles.
Interesting stuff, always glad to see gaming news like this! 🥰
