Call of Duty always sells ridiculously well, doesn't it? Even in an off year, the franchise is typically one of the best-selling releases, with millions of copies shipped worldwide for each title. So, what happens when Modern Warfare returns as most AAA games are pushed to 2023? The best-selling CoD launch ever, as it turns out.
In an Activision statement (via BusinessWire), the company stated that Modern Warfare 2 has delivered more than $800 million in sell-through during its first three days on the market, making it the best opening weekend ever for the franchise.
In comparison, 2019's Modern Warfare Reboot brought in $600 million during the same time period, while the final game of the original trilogy fell just short of $800 million in five days. It's safe to say MW is still as popular as ever!
Johanna Faries, General Manager of Call of Duty, had this to say on the record-breaking launch:
"Thank you, Call of Duty players, for making Modern Warfare II’s launch one for the record books as well as the highest grossing entertainment opening of the year. It is our honour and privilege to deliver such a historic launch weekend for the best fans in the world..."
"As amazing as this opening has been, Call of Duty has much more in store. An unprecedented level of support for the Modern Warfare universe is on the horizon and Warzone 2.0’s launch is right around the corner. It’s an incredible time for the franchise."

All this tells me is gaming is getting more popular in general ..I remember the original MW2 feeling alot more must have than this one...more people must be playing games nowadays
Seems like taking a year off helped the franchise.
@Kaloudz I’m very confused now because i could swear last year they didn’t release a CoD, but looking at the wiki:
2017 - WWII
2018 - Black Ops 4
2019 - MW
2020 - Black Ops Cold War
2021 - Vanguard
2022 - MW2
… no pauses at all… wasn’t there some noise last year about them skipping a year? Am I hallucinating things?
@Tharsman The rumour is that 2023 will be a gap year, with MW2 potentially getting two years of support before Treyarch come back into the fold. Not confirmed though, so we'll have to wait and see!
Well deserved, what an amazing game this is!
I have never played a CoD game but why are there so many with the exact same name?
@Ashadelo they like to make reboots or reimaginations of old titles, for what reason you may ask? Maybe its because they are so much beloved and well-received because of characters, quality, etc...there is also the point that COD was receiving a lot of critics last gen about it going too far from its roots, changing a bunch of things that could be seen as negative(the whole si-fi and futuristic aesthetic), so that could also be related, to give the feeling that is really coming back to its roots, its glory days, you know.

@Tharsman there was me thinking you were making a joke because Vanguard was such trash 😂
Since I only campaign, I'll wait until it comes to game pass after the acquisition is approved.
Wouldn't have broken even if it wasn't for that price increase to £70 poor Activision
