Some of you may recall that in the recent whirlwind of acquisition news, Embracer Group successfully picked up Square Enix's Western studios & IP. Those series' included Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief and more, and the current developer of Tomb Raider has announced that it will continue to take charge of that particular franchise.
In a news post on the team's website, Crystal Dynamics announced that it is has 'taken control' of both Tomb Raider and Legacy of Kain, and that the developer is now the owner of the two franchises.
"We are excited to inform you that Crystal Dynamics has taken control of several game franchises—including TOMB RAIDER and Legacy of Kain—from the games’ previous owner, Square Enix Limited.
As a result of this change, Crystal Dynamics (or its affiliate) is now the owner of these games and the controller of the gameplay and personal data related to them.
We look forward to taking this new and exciting journey with you!"
Of course, Crystal Dynamics was recently charged with rebooting the Tomb Raider series, with the modern Tomb Raider trilogy spawning three titles across a five-year window. Legacy of Kain on the other hand hasn't been touched since 2003.
The developer is also working in tandem with Xbox's The Initiative, and it'll be interesting to see how the team juggles that responsibility with its freshly acquired IP.
What direction would you like Crystal Dynamics to take with Tomb Raider? Drop your ideas down below!

Just hope they fix Avengers work some proper online missions.
Such waste of good IP that could been a destiny style game with marvel heroes.
Oh cool, I enjoyed the reboot games I'm glad they'll maintain control.
Didn't someone at xbox mention they was interesting in letting studios make a game for gamepass as a sort of tryout to see if they should be acquired? Perfect dark...
Crystal Dynamics own Tomb Raider and Embracer own Crystal Dynamics (the article is very confusing).
I don’t understand this.
Shouldn't it be Embracer group takes control?
This is the deal Microsoft should have made, with all these games coming to game pass.
This was a confusing article. They are taking control of TR and Legacy of Kain. I didn’t know they were thought to have lost the ability to create new TR games, but why throw in Legacy if Kain, was there a new game of Kain announced?
I think the main takeaway is that Crystal Dynamics is no longer developing Tomb Raider FOR Square Enix. They will not need to take anyone else's advice but their own. Sounds like they have complete freedom to do as they please with these IPs.
A better headline would have been Embracer grants Crystal Dynamics creative control over Tomb Raider, legacy of Cain.
@ThatFilbo Agree 100%!
.....BUT WHAT ABOUT GEX!!?? (Happy to hear about Legacy of Kain though.)
Very nice. Hoping for new entries for both. Reboot made me a tomb raider fan.
