There have been some mixed reactions to The Ascent since it hit Xbox Game Pass last month, but everyone seems to agree it's visually stunning. That being said, things can always look better, and this recent mod that changes the game to a first-person perspective really showcases just how beautiful the world actually is.
As created by YouTuber Gaming with Griff Griffin, a mod has allowed them to move the camera around the world of The Ascent. The change effectively indicates what a first-person playthrough would look like, and we're on board.
While some of the textures are understandably lacking due to it being an intended isometric camera, there's no denying how alive The Ascent looks up close. Ships fly around the city, NPCs go about their business and the atmosphere oozes from the screen. We can't help but be a little bit gutted we won't be able to experience the game this way without mods.
Of course, The Ascent is still an adventure worth taking - from our experience at least. The gunplay feels fantastic, and there's an ambience to the world that sucks you in. If you haven't checked it out and you have Xbox Game Pass, you have nothing to lose by giving it a go.

Holy cow, that level of detail is insane, I've commented before about how visually impressive this game is but I'm doubling down on this now. The writing on that NPCs visor and the text on the magazines stand out for. You should not see this level of detail in an isometric game, let alone from a 12 person team.
This would be amazing in first person or even third.
Plot twist: This is the actual CP2077. The other one's the imposter.
Are you kidding me? A team of 12 people managed to make a world more vibrant than cdpr? Omg. I know night city is way bigger in scale but Ill take a small alive map over a big dead one 10 out of 10 times. Cutos to the Ascent crew.
Beautiful. Neon giant knows their cyberpunk. The game is phenomenal, for me.
Most isometric game devs: how much detail? Not that much, no one is gonna look that close.
Neon giant: but what if they do..?!
I almost 100% completed this game this weekend. It was awesome and so much fun! 2 achievements are still unobtainable in the 100%ing the codex and getting all the Enemy Codex files and unfortunately my save file got restarted after i finished the game so i couldn't die 100 times, i only needed 13 more times to die to get that one but other than those 3 achievements its a fantastic game!
I’m loving this game so far. The world looks amazing, vibrant, alive, and packed with detail. I love all the different weapons and augmentations you can experiment with. This is my go-to game right now.
I really want to love this game. It has some weird design quirks that I can't understand. Like, why on earth is there no true offline mode?
@OliverOwen Those are the 3 achievements I'm missing, I checked the rarity earlier and the enemy codex achievement now has a 0.01% completion rate, it had been sat at 0.00% all weekend.
I read on Trueachievements that the devs are aware and looking to fix the bugged achievements. Maybe the completion % changing has something to do with that. Hopefully it gets a fix soon.
Wow that looks pretty damn good. Would be totally open to a first person mode or free use drone camera. The detail is really insane especially considering how the game is normally played, text on those tiny boxes or wrinkles on an alien's forehead. Really cool!
It's incredible the amount of detail that went into what is essentially a twin stick shooter. There is detail in this vid that you never even see or notice in the game because of the camera. The game looks like a pre rendered game looked just a few years ago, but this is running in real time. I'm really impressed with what a 12 person team did, and on top of it all, it's actually really fun. Especially with a couple of buddies. It gets really intense.
I'm really enjoying the game, and I think I am closing in on the final credits. I have thought to myself on a number of occasions that the game may well be better played in first person (at least from an exploration perspective). I struggle to think of a game where the world actually feels more alive; it truly feels lived in, and as if those you see as you wonder about the myriad of levels are actually going about their day to day lives. It is very, very impressive...
