Might give F1 a quick go. And obviously Valheim has had plenty written about it too.
Of subject is it me or are Game reviews getting really critical of late. I only follow a few which I have done for years but lately wow, has the game got to be so perfect.
At this rate and to stay totally neutral
BOTW 2
Redfall
Spider-Man 2
Are in for a tough time at some point this year.
I'm looking forward to way to the woods.
It's look interesting.
Is there anybody else waiting for this game?
I didn't see any comment about it
@Dezzy70 Yes and no that I agree with you there. I feel that there are certain games that get unfairly smashed in reviews, like Sonic Frontiers or Forspoken, but others that have similar issues to them that are largely forgiven. But also, as a whole, the release window the past maybe two, three years hasn’t been loaded with many titles that are undeniable classics. We still get maybe two or three a year, but we were so spoiled with solid games and release schedules for a couple years that it makes things appear more negative. Compare 2017-2019’s output to 2020-2022’s and the average level of quality in games was just simply higher 2017-2019, and exceptionally so. It was a ridiculously strong couple of years. For me, in 2019, there were at least 10/10 titles and if I think about it, there may have been more. My top 10 that year would’ve batted at an average above 9/10. That’s crazy and unusually outstanding for the industry. If you go back to 2012 though or a couple of other years, you’d notice that the industry has strong years and off years. So far, 2023 has been relatively strong. Two months in, I can sort of cobble together a top 10 games of the year list, even if there’s nothing yet that’s GoTY tier for me (but we’ve got Zelda and Pikmin as well as Capcom’s release slate as easy eventually shoe-ins for the category and hopefully the Bethesda titles and Final Fantasy games as well, among what is to yet be announced). With the start or end of any generation, the games typically aren’t as critically praised as they are mid-generation. This year will likely develop into a year of better reviews as time marches on.
@somnambulance
We shall see what happens, remember 2017 BOTW and Odyssey and that was just the Switch alone.
Let’s hope we start seeing a very high quality of games soon this year.
Will be interesting to see what Wo Long gets next week.
@somnambulance
The most interesting review for me this year will be BOTW2 it’s been over 6 years in development and the wow factor happened 6 years ago, open world Zelda.
After 6 years in development, the game engine already there i think we are expecting something big, but it is the game I’m most concerned about, no sign of much new on the ground, no sign of shines 120 that gives you good reason to really explore and some floating bits up above and a make your vehicle 🚗 bits.
So far not looking like 6 years of resource to me.
But it is Nintendo and a massive franchise to them so got my fingers crossed.
@Dezzy70 I have a feeling it’ll be roughly more BotW with some big surprises. The sky mobility is going to be a big thing and the story, basic as it may be (similar to BotW) will likely be pretty outstanding. If it’s simply more of the same, it’s 9/10 territory, but I’m guessing it’ll be the Ragnarok this year. Tears of the Kingdom and RE4 are really safe bets. I have a feeling the two FF titles will be big and successful titles too (for me at least), given how much I’ve liked Square’s output recently. Still really unsure on Starfield. Wish I had the confidence I used to have in Bethesda. 10 years ago, I never thought I’d be like, “Oh, I hope they can make a game that reminds me how good those glory days were.” I was talking with a friend yesterday and we agreed that Fallout and ES 360 era both feel like more lived in open worlds than most newer games nowadays. I can only imagine how it’d feel if they recaptured that magic, but Skyrim’s the last time they amazed me.
Hopefully Wo Long is good
@Dezzy70 nope, honestly they are not critical at all, we have so many games around or over 90 that it's a bit ridiculous. But they did become at least a little bit more critical than ten years ago which is a good thing.
@Moonglow Yeah, probably. Not confirmed, but very likely.
@somnambulance There isnt a single game from Bethesdas main studio that I wouldn't rather play than botw. BOTW is a fine game but good lord is it overrated, its babbys first open world game with a bare bones plot and a total of 4 reskinned monsters inhabiting a ton of extremely samey feeling dungeons. I'll take Todd's weakest game, Fallout 4, 7 days a week.
Valheim is also coming to Xbox One...
Velheim is the one of most interest to me.
I'm not normally into survival titles, but this one looks worth a punt
I’ll probably give Valheim a try. Not sure if it’ll stick in my regular rotation though. Sea of Thieves & Halo Infinite’s new seasons will have both been out by then.
@Jenkinss Disagree completely, though BotW isn’t really a combat game. It’s an exploration game and its inherent sparseness and minimalism pushes the sense of openness to the open world. I mean, what else is there to say about BotW at this point? For me, BotW is in the same league as Skyrim as a timeless classic, whereas I’ve been actively disappointed with mainline Bethesda for a generation now and hope Starfield is a return to form. Fallout 4 and 76 were such a fall from grace for me. 4 was an 7 or 8/10 for me at release, which is good, but, coming from Bethesda, that score felt weak, and really did feel like a huge stepping down from Skyrim as far as world building goes. And 76 was such a mess, potentially the biggest disappointment I’ve ever had in gaming. I’ll likely follow Bethesda’s games regardless of how much I like Starfield, but I’m hoping it’s a game that speaks to me. If not, well, Arkane hasn’t let me down yet!
@somnambulance I sort of agree with you on all this, 76 isn't a mainline Bethesda game which is why I said 4 was their worst game, Austin isn't Maryland, and I'd agree 4 is an 8/10. And I'll take that over BotW, which again is easily the most overrated game of all time, it would be torn apart if any other developer released such a barebones game. The combat is solid and the biomes are fun to explore. There's barely a story to speak of, the amount of enemy diversity is so bad it's hard to even talk about it without it seeming like hyperbole. The puzzle dungeons are samey and boring. So yeah we agree on pretty much everything you said except BotW, which somehow the world thinks a game with 4 enemies, a non existent plot, samey dungeons rearranged 100 times, and 2 generations old graphics (at the time of its release on wii u) is a 10/10 masterpiece. I know it's a critic darling but I just don't see it and I'm far from alone. I can't imagine objectively grading the game and coming up with something over a 7 considering how little is included.
Valheim looks like hot garbo released in 360 era.
