The big Xbox Game Pass release of this week is undoubtedly Scorn, which brings its brand-new horror adventure to the service a week earlier than originally planned, arriving on Friday, October 14th.
Scorn's development began almost a decade ago back in 2014, and we've been hearing about the Xbox version since 2020, so it's a long time coming. It's generated a lot of hype over the past few years, and it's finally ready to go!
Ahead of its release, we've put together a quick guide so you know what to expect when Scorn arrives, as well as some details on its style of gameplay, pre-install information and the exact time it goes live on Xbox Game Pass.
What Is Scorn?
We already know that Scorn is an "atmospheric first-person horror adventure game", but what kind of gameplay can we expect? Well, developer Ebb Software has suggested this is somewhat of a puzzle-based game, taking place in an open-ended world with "different interconnected regions" that each form a maze-like structure.
Weapons are definitely involved as well though, although your loadout is "defined and limited". Because of this, you'll need to adapt your playstyle throughout and determine whether to fight, or whether to take cover and hold back.
Here's a bit more of how Ebb Software describes the gameplay in Scorn:
"Scorn is an atmospheric first-person horror adventure game set in a nightmarish universe of odd forms and somber tapestry."
"Every location contains its own theme (story), puzzles and characters that are integral in creating a cohesive world. Throughout the game you will open up new areas, acquire different skill sets, weapons, various items and try to comprehend the sights presented to you."
Is Scorn Coming To Xbox One?
Scorn is coming to Xbox Game Pass on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PC and Xbox Cloud Gaming. There's no native Xbox One version unfortunately, so if you want to play Scorn on that console, you'll need to do so via the cloud.
How Long Does Scorn Take To Beat?
Back in early August, Ebb Software confirmed that Scorn would take around 6-8 hours to beat for most players. Here's the full quote from the developer about this:
"The world spans a variety of different environments across various levels. Play times, of course, can vary depending on how long it takes someone to progress through the puzzles, but we estimate it’ll take 6 to 8 hours to complete the game."
Since we first published this article, we've put together an exhaustive Scorn walkthrough guide elsewhere on Pure Xbox, which will help you beat the game and complete all of its puzzles:
Scorn Reviews: What Are The Critics Saying?
Update: More reviews are now live for Scorn, including here at Pure Xbox where we gave the game a "Good" 7/10 score. Here's a bit of what we had to say as part of our verdict:
"Scorn may make a few missteps here and there, with some short-lived but shoddy combat sequences and puzzles that grow a little repetitive as the game reaches its climax, but none of this really takes away from the artistic achievement at core of this adventure."
What Is The Release Time For Scorn On Xbox Game Pass?
Scorn's release date is Friday, October 14th, and its release time varies depending on where you are.
Here's the Scorn release time for various timezones around the world:
October 14th:
- 3am PDT
- 6am EDT
- 11am BST
- 12pm CEST
- 9pm AEDT
How Do I Pre-Load Scorn On Xbox Game Pass?
To pre-load Scorn, all you need to do is head to the Xbox Game Pass app and search for the game. Then, you'll be prompted to "pre-install", with the download size sitting at a very reasonable 18GB on Xbox Series X.
Looking forward to trying out Scorn on Xbox Game Pass? Let us know in the comments below.

Already have it pre installed and I'm hoping it's enjoyable
I think this is going to be a love it or hate it kind of game since it seems to be a mishmash of the puzzle adventure style of games like Myst with FPS combat.
And let's be honest, for anyone who has played Myst before the internet...it can be difficult. I think that mileage can vary with modern attention spans.
I am looking forward to it!
The only thing I’m worried about with this game is everywhere you go looks the same, so inevitably you get lost…and often. Hopefully I’m wrong.
Pre-installed. Hoping I like this one. But this game comes out tomorrow and there are almost no reviews out yet. Not a good sign from what I've experienced.
Looking foward to this will stop playing far cry for a bit and then get back to that until the dark pictures game is out and Callisto protocol
Been looking forward to this for years. Agree with the other posts though…everything shown so far does look the same, so there’s a valid concern of it not appreciating your time. And the lack of reviews so far are never a good sign.
But I guess that’s the beauty of day 1 gamepass…get to try it as part of our sub. The only thing lost is years worth of anticipation/excitement…so erm…win?
@Dr_Luigi make sure you left your sub run out. Then find yourself some cheap gold (I use a free vpn and go turkey)…get a couple of years of gold and redeem via a browser (using your xbox account email). Sign in to your xbox and make sure you’re fully subbed to gold. Then just buy a month of gamepass - will convert everything to gamepass ultimate…meaning you get years worth for super cheap. 👍
@Dr_Luigi why not? You’ve nothing to lose. You may even end up renewing your sub 😉
I'll try it 'cause GP so why not, but despite really appreciating the Geiger style, It looks like its not really much fun and simply unpleasant for the sake of it.
I hope I'm wrong and this ends up being intriguing and thought provoking, but I have doubts 😢
@Dr_Luigi I got 2 years for just over £60 I could have got a better deal and gone for 3 years but hadn’t done it before so didn’t trust just how easy it was. So I get the reluctance to use a VPN and purchase from a foreign site.
@Bleachedsmiles Careful what you say, last time I suggested things like this for how I get me and my families GP for £1 a month, I got told I must be using sites that use stolen credit cards.
You know, because people apparently don’t understand markets have different pricing structures in place and exchange rates are a thing.
Anyway, thanks for sticking around and being a fellow VPN or cheap purchase member! Haha.
You’d swear some of these people work for Microsoft’s legal team sometimes.
Stay safe anyway, and happy gaming! I’m off to pre load Scorn!
@TheElectroFunky That’s weird. Tbh I’d be very surprised MS isn’t aware of people like me and our master hacking skills of buying official gold cards for countries such as Turkey when we’re not in said country. I honestly don’t think they care. At the end of the day they want gamepass subs growing - this is why they do so many 1 month for 1 pound offers. They’re not losing money as more people on gamepass means more value with their stocks.
As for the site I used I used PayPal.
