Back in the middle of February 2021, Microsoft announced the first additions into a brand-new 'FPS Boost' program for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, improving the performance of select Xbox One games on the new systems.
Microsoft has worked closely with developers to make these improvements happen, and the feature offers "higher, steadier framerates [that] make games visually smoother," all provided by the Xbox team at no extra cost.

If you're wondering what 'Auto Enabled' means, Microsoft hasn't made every game automatically boosted due to the fact that some titles have suffered a resolution drop because of it. As a result, the company is leaving it up to you to decide whether you want to utilise FPS Boost or not, as detailed by the Xbox team below:
"In some instances, because there are higher graphics requirements to enable FPS Boost technology, we’ve had to reduce a game’s resolution to ensure it both runs smoothly and plays great. In those select cases, such as Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 in this latest title announcement, FPS Boost is not automatically enabled for Xbox Series X gamers. For all titles receiving this update, gamers will see a clear indicator if a title is running FPS Boost.
At Xbox, we’re all about giving you the choice in how you want to play your favorite games, whether in its original form or with FPS Boost and/or Auto HDR. As we also detailed a few weeks back and included as part of our March Platform Update, you can now go into the 'Manage Game' section for any enhanced title, where you’ll see the new 'Compatibility Options' button that will allow you to toggle FPS Boost and Auto HDR 'on' or 'off.'"
Microsoft has since explained that there are no more plans for FPS Boosted titles "in the immediate future", primarily due to "finding where some of the limitations of our current technique is." The program could return at some point down the line, but as of 2024 it's still yet to make a comeback.

What a fantastic feature.
Since there is a choice, now, just go the nuclear option and enable it at the entire backwards compatible emulation level with a default to off and then slowly auto-enable it on tested games.
Sure some games might be broken, but they will make great YouTube fodder! 🙂
But in all seriousness, it is great that Team Green is now allowing people to turn it on or off for those looking for a more authentic experience.
Love to see more of these in the future! This is a great feature.
Still holding out hope that Left 4 Dead 2 gets an FPS boost 😀
Sniper 4 definitely benefited from the FPS boost, but Fallout 4 took a big hit to the resolution. I turned it off after a few minutes to get 4K back.
I wish they would do it for Far Cry 5.
I'm hoping for Dark Souls (whole series) and Dying Light next. Dying Light really needs it, on Xbox its so blurry at 30FPS.
I love Mirror's Edge: Catalyst. Fantastic game. Shame I played it a few years back on PS4 all the way through now that it can run like this, but maybe I'll pick it up again someday. It's definitely one of the more pure fun games out there.
@PyroMessiah86 Fromsoft could at least bring the PS4 Pro patch to DS3 in the form of an X1X patch. I can understand Mankind Divided not getting one since the game flopped and sells for $5 every other week (it didn't deserve to flop, it simply did for external reasons), but DS3 is a success....From's just sloppy there.
That is awesome.
@BleedingDreamer done, ahhaha
@PyroMessiah86 dying light done too xD
@Olivotec @BleedingDreamer it looks like a different game at 60fps now I got a reason to play it again. I'm not a Far Cry fan but I really enjoyed Far Cry 5 it was one of my favorites last generation.
Metro Redux physical version is not working with FPS boost
It's not the resolution that has been dropped in games that don't have the option on by default. If that was the case, I'd sacrifice resolution but some (someone please confirm if all) of them run the Xbox One version instead of the Xbox One X version, including lower-resolution texture and lower-quality effects.
@BleedingDreamer haven't tried fc5 yet but i've downloaded it! Definitely going to check it out later! I only finished the fc3
Great feature. However, I think they need to indicate FPS boost somehow in the game's store page. It has important bearing on the decision to buy Xbox One games.
You'd think Xbox exclusives would be an FPS boost priority. Quantum Break and Sunset Overdrive next please!
Life is strange 2 has FPS boost disabled on Series S at the moment
Replaying dying light on PS4 pro the frame rate drops are quite annoying
Stupid question...what does the N/A mean? Assume for some games that this FPS boost isn't available for the X but it is for the S and vice versa. Just seems strange that in the case of Steep that theres a boost for the Series S but not the X. Or am I missing something? Its early and I havent had a coffee yet...
@Blue_Rover No stupid questions here!
It just means that specific console hasn't received a boost. In the case of Steep, the game already ran at 60FPS on Xbox Series X (because of its Xbox One X optimisation a few years ago), so the FPS Boost was specifically targeted at the Series S.
@FraserG That makes perfect sense. I am glad there is a no stupid questions policy! Thank you...
I was waiting for them to do this with Fable and Dragon Age Origins so this is ace!
My ocd wishes this was in alphabetical order, instead of release date...nevertheless, thanks😬
@PhhhCough I agree about the alphabetical order! The date is irrelevant once they are added.
No Dishonored 2 or AC: Origins?
The only two games I wanted to replay with fps boost, damn it.
@PyroMessiah86
Dying Light and DS3 both have fps bost, a boost in resolution its what they could do with (playing on Series X atm).
2 words, guys, "Sortable columns". Tracking down a game to check if it's on the list is a pain when they're sorted by date-added and there's no way to sort the list by name.
It’s great that I can revisit Fallout 3 again in far better form than it was on the 360
Disappointed that Final Fantasy XIII has no FPS Boost but its sequels do.
