That's a problem that can creep up when buying a used system. Who knows what's exactly wrong with it. If you can try contacting the previous owner especially if you bought from Ebay or a private sale. If you bought it from a shop like Gamestop then the best idea I can suggest is maybe an exchange.

You could also find a place like UBreakIFix where they can repair it but that would require probably sending it away for a few days.

Regardless unless you know how to repair it yourself, then you will have to send it away or get rid of it so you might want to explain that to your son. Yeah he may get upset but there's no way around it. Next time look into a new system rather then a used.

I second everything @Tasuki said. For what it's worth, if I were to make a random guess, it's probably a failing power supply. My launch day unit occasionally had spontaneous restarts over the span of a year which I attributed to software crashes and driver glitches in a new system. Just a few days before the 1 year warranty ended it shut down in the middle of playing, and that was it, it was dead as a doornail and wouldn't turn back on. The earlier soft resets were probably early signs of a bad power supply out of the box that I just assumed were software issues. In my case I was narrowly able to get it fixed under warranty in a bout a 1-1.5 week turnaround. I don't know how much MS charges for repair services out of warranty, but it may be worth checking, if it's reasonable (Sony is NOT reasonable for Playstations, it's cheaper to just buy a new console, but I get the impression Microsoft is a bit more reasonable there). Sure it would have to go away for a week or two, but you'd get a working console back, assuming the price is reasonable.

If you want to check pricing, you should be able to log into your account somewhere on the main Microsoft or Microsoft Accounts sites (not the Xbox site specifically) and go under tech support for registered devices. The whole thing is automated with an online checkout and shipping label (including expedited shipping for a fee.)

Alternately like Tasuki said, a local store may offer repair services.
