As it states in that article:
It looks like Microsoft may only put ads in free-to-play games at most, at least right now. The document lists Call of Duty Mobile, Candy Crush, and Hearthstone as examples for its advertising plans.
Also remember that a portion of King's games are playable on PC via browser as well as PC. This new ad push, however, should go hand-in-hand with Microsoft's continued investment into mobile gaming on an entire Xbox ecosystem level, not just on the level of Activision.
This isn't the first time we've reported about Xbox further integrating ads to propel growth. It's possible that this post-merger integration and mingling of MSAN and King's adtech could help create a foundation for low-cost, ad-supported Xbox Game Pass subscription tiers, similar to the ad plans that major streamers like Hulu, Netflix, and Max currently offer.
In other words, you may see Adverts on Mobile based games and/or Free to Play. As games are also playable on Browsers, they can have Ads on the browser too - much like PureXbox has ads on its site too.
Selling advertising space is another potential revenue stream to support mobile, browser based and/or F2P games so they are not so 'reliant' on selling a certain amount of MTX to keep providing updates etc. Also they could 'introduce' a lower tier Sub service with Ads supplementing the 'loss' in revenue from a 'lower cost' entry point.
A lot of F2P/Mobile type games have certain limitations that can be lifted with 'real money'. Games like Farmville for example would allow you to do 'more' in a certain time frame if you payed money, but maybe you could watch 'ads' instead to earn the in game credits required.
I don't play these types of games myself, but numerous games are designed in such a way that 'spending' real money is the 'only' way to really be competitive or even play the game as much as you'd like. Maybe with selling Advertising, they have an additional revenue stream and not rely on the 'few' that will spend money and if you don't want Ads, they may have a 'Premium' ad-free tier for you.
Its just exploring their options and ABK have a lot more experience in the F2P and Mobile sector and King in particular has a LOT of experience in this area they can 'use'. Its similar to buying Bethesda and therefore now have the Id Tech engine they can use across ALL their studios if they wanted, they now have this Ad Tech Platform too...
A pessimist is just an optimist with experience!
Why can't life be like gaming? Why can't I restart from an earlier checkpoint??
