We don't know about you, but we thought Xbox's showcase at the Tokyo Game Show 2022 was a really good watch this year! Not only were we treated to a bunch of trailers and interviews for the likes of Persona 5 Royal and Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, but we also received various Game Pass reveals such as Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Deathloop and Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch Remastered!
Ni No Kuni is just the latest in a line of JRPGs that have arrived on Xbox Game Pass over the past few years, with the likes of Yakuza: Like a Dragon and Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes Of An Elusive Age also proving popular with subscribers.
So, as we wind down from this extremely busy week, we're keen to find out some of your favourite JRPGs on Xbox. Any Game Pass favourites? Perhaps you can bring to light a couple of hidden gems we hadn't considered...

Final Fantasy 7, 9. The OG Square (Pre-Enix). Still waiting for the pixel remasters, 1-6 are still my favorites.
I haven't played a lot yet. It will probably be Yakuza: Like a Dragon, I suspect.
I consider Scarlet Nexus an action game… so it’s between FF 13-2 and World of Final Fantasy.
Code Vein was a fun Souls-Like
I'm only starting my jrpg adventure, but loved Persona 5. Got Ni No Kuni installed and Dragon Quest 11 on my play later list. I'd say I'm set for a good month or two 😉 It's great that Xbox is getting more diversity in terms of games.
Lost Odyssey, Dragon Quest XI S, Yakuza Like a Dragon, Final Fantasy IX, and Tales of Vesperia Definitive Edition are my top 5 on Xbox.
Yakuza 7 became one of my favorite RPGs ever, and I played it on my brand new XSX. That was one hell of an experience.
I also love Dragon Quest XI, didn't actually play it on XBox (yet) because I played it on Switch at launch, but its available and highly recommend it to everyone. I plan to give this one another go and play it through on XBox sooner or later.
Final Fantasy X is a classic and one of my favorite FF ever.
FF 12 is also worth mentioning, I have loved what I have played, but got to admit I have never finished it (always get distracted with other stuff) but I'll beat it someday, seriously!
@Kaloudz you can judge I like that game too not my favorite but I love the dress/ job system.
Yeah I’d love a sequel to WoFF.
There are a few I liked very much. Obviously Tales of Arise (my profile Pic). Such an amazing action game and I loved every minute of it, even the last part which seems to be hated by some.
Dq11 also is a gem, a very relaxing turn base jrpg. Nothing overly complicated and the music is also very relaxing.
But my personal favorite is Yakuza like a dragon. It was my first ever Yakuza game and it got me addicted, so much fun and the side content is way to addicting haha.
Can't wait to try out ni no kuni and p5r even though I had both on Ps5 I am going to play them on Xbox just to show people with a Xbox play Japanese games as well
Dragon Quest 11 and Ni No Kuni are my favorite.
Lost Odyssey is a masterpiece and I wish more people would talk about it. That game is one of my favorite JRPGs. My other mention is Dragon Quest XI. It’s such a great game, and in my top 10 of all time.
Persona 5, soon enough. 3, 4 and 5 are all excellent
Persona 5 is legitimately one of if not my favorite game of all time so that kind of wins by default for me.
@Korgon we posted at almost exactly the same time, the universe is speaking through us rn
@Dusk_Actual
Great minds think alike!😁
There are so many fantastic Japanese RPGs games on Xbox and that's the good thing. The last one I played was Octopath Traveller. My expectations were low but I loved it. We got the Kingdom Hearts games (I played them all), the Final Fantasy games (except the early ones and VII Remake... yet), the Tales of series, the Dragon Quest and Persona titles are starting to come as well... Ni no Kuni was just added... How can I choose one? And I haven't played them all so I have a good backlog here. I don't even know which one to play next. By the way, according to my Xbox statistics, the one I've played the most is Final Fantasy XV. I loved X but not X-II. There's also Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon.
Blue dragon is good if you like old school jrpgs. Game is pretty great after disc 1, same as alot of old jrpgs. Playable on back compat and its currently about $5 on sale in the store
As of right now it would be Ni No Kuni, That could change though when Persona 5 Royal comes to Xbox..
I'm looking forward to persona 5 and suikoden
The first Ni No Kuni is one of my favorite JRPGS ever. Played it on PS3 and digging back in on xbox. Highly recommended if you enjoy jrpgs...
the only RPG game i have for my X Box One S is Final Fantasy Type 0 which i do enjoy playing.
the rest of my RPG games i have for my other gaming systems
I haven't played any jrpgs on my series s as I save them for the ps5, but I did play a few back on the 360, I played and enjoyed lost odyssey and a game called infinite undiscovery.
Also played a game called ninety nine nights, but that wasn't very good.
Edit: Actually scrap that first part, i did start playing nier automata on my series s
Ready to play deathloop. Otherwise most of the multiplat stuff I have on switch.
I’m not the biggest fan of the genre, but I really enjoyed Yakuza: Like a Dragon, and right now I’m playing Soul Hackers 2.
I have enjoyed Dragon Quest XI S very much, incredible game.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon was amazing as well.
Dragon Quest XI S
Final Fantasy VII
Lost Odyssey
(soon) Persona 5 Royal
Valkyria Chronicles 4
@SplooshDmg Bless you.
Valkyria Chronicles 4 is AMAZING. My favorite game of 2018, easily. It deserves more love.
Yakuza Like a Dragon is the only one I have. Even came with a free PC copy.
ALL OF THEM MUHAHAHHAHAAH
But if I had to choose three I would choose...
Final Fantasy VII
Persona 5
Dragon Quest XI
Tales of Vesperia. Came out on the 360.
Near everything else I played on another platform first. You know, since it takes years for Xbox to get anything.
@Kaloudz ....nothing and no one can reach Wakka levels of annoying... yeah?
@SplooshDmg Wasn't VC developed by the Wild Arms people? I think I heard that and have wanted to play the series ever since. Do you need to play the first 3 to enjoy part 4?
@SplooshDmg
It's been on my wishlist for an eternity. I loved Valkyria Chronicles and keep hearing great things about 4. Time to buy it, I guess 🙂
@Kaloudz @Grail_Quest Wakka didn’t annoy me as much as Tidus. I mean “I’m cold”, “I’m hungry” … I don’t care.
I feel I should point out for anyone reading this many of these games are on sale right now.
@Ralizah not you too. Im warning you. Encouraging @SplooshDmg can lead to forum chains as long as they get with NES.
Lost Odyssey. Fantastic game. The way funeral scene of a certain character really brought tears to my eyes. Also the "viginettes" would be what it was like if immorality was a real thing
I'm a bit disappointed with the grpahics of Ni No Kuni on Xbox - the shadows in particular are super blocky / low res and look worse than the Switch version... how is that possible?!
@mousieone At least we're talking about a JRPG.
@SplooshDmg I'm probably gonna repurchase it on Playstation at some point when the complete edition goes on sale again. Not only for the trophies, but also so I'll have access to the DLC, which obnoxiously never goes on sale on Switch.
I thought about grabbing it on Steam, but I realized I don't actually care about the framerate all that much. These games look and feel fine running at 30fps.
I really, really liked how they changed the side stories in this game compared to the original. It gave the game a... Fire Emblem-ish quality for me, and encouraged me to actually use the entire squad.
I actually have 2 and 3 ready to go on my Vita. Ever had the opportunity to play those?
Eternal Sonata and Resonance of Fate.
@SplooshDmg By the time I got to the endgame, I'd played it for about 80 hours. I thought about doing absolutely everything, but I decided I'd probably want trophies to go along with that exertion and moved on to other games. Anyway, it gives me an excuse to revisit the game on another platform.
Heh, yeah. I mean, I won't say higher framerates don't feel better. They obviously do. But... I dunno, people get so hung up on the technical aspects of the medium that I think they forget to just chill out and enjoy playing games. I think it's fine to enjoy the "inferior" version of something. Do people really lose their mind when they have to watch a film on DVD instead of 4K Blu-Ray, I wonder?
A hacked Vita is amazing. Basically a full on retro gaming machine + access to all PSP games + being able to mod/patch the censorship out of specific games. And, like with the SWOLED, the screen looks amazing.
@Kaloudz FF 12 you mean?
@SplooshDmg @Ralizah that’s true. Hmm I like reading about that all day long to the cows come home. Okay sounds good. Besides I can’t take a sad Sploosh.
@Kaloudz it took a while for me to get into it. For sure. I think opening with so much so quick kinda of burned me a little. The combat takes a long time to lock in for sure.
@SplooshDmg Yeah, as much as I loved it, I'm not in a massive rush to go through VC4 again. Still need to play the second and third games. Still need to play through a bunch of Atlus JRPGs. Still need to play that sequel to AI: The Somnium Files. Still need to play 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim and Sakura Wars. Still need to that Grandia HD collection I bought on sale. I have gobs of games in my backlog. Still need to check out those title updates for MHR: Sunbreak. Still need to see Triangle Strategy's Golden Route. Rain Code, Fire Emblem Engage, Pikmin 4, and Fatal Frame 4 will be releasing before too long. etc etc. I kind of envy those people who see the riches of modern gaming and decide they have absolutely nothing to play. I'd sure have a lot more expendable cash!
lol I upgraded the rest of the components in my rig back in 2020, but my GPU is still the ancient GTX 970 I got in 2015. More shockingly, it's still up to the task of running almost every game I want to play! Cyberpunk pushes it a bit harder than I like, but I believe that has a dynamic resolution option I can enable that'll make a higher framerate easier to hit.
Years ago, I felt like I needed a new card, but now I mostly want to replace it eventually because I don't know how many years it has left in it.
VPN isn't really necessary for old ROMs, IMO. Maybe for newer games. There is a non-zero chance of Sony banning your account for modifying the system, but it almost never seems to happen with Vita hackers and pirates.
@Kaloudz kind of same. Like I’ve got 1 RPGs a month and now that goes into next year. It’s like are you trying to kill
Me?!?
I really also want to finish ToA.
@SplooshDmg Glad to hear you're enjoying XC2. It's flawed, but, all the same, I liked it considerably more than previous Xenoblade games. Torna and XC3 are arguably even better, so you have some good times ahead of you.
You have a really nice setup for your rig! I guess the benefit of splurging on a really powerful card is that you don't have to worry too much about tinkering with settings, right? Most games should be able to manage max settings with little issue.
For myself, I just find that most games I play don't require powerful hardware, so upgrading my PC further just feels a bit needless at the moment. And with how large my backlog of low spec games are, I don't really see that changing any time in the near future.
The lack of DQ ports on modern systems is annoying. It feels like Square-Enix keeps finding ways to re-release the first three and thoroughly ignores the existence of the popular middle games in the series. They need 'pixel remasters' of all the DQ games, frankly, instead of just doing an HD-2D version of the third game.
@Kaloudz lol You're welcome. I too am still haunted (traumatized?) all these years later. Misery loves company!
