Welcome to the weekend! We've had a busy couple of days in Xbox world, and now it's time to relax with some games - with new Game Pass titles, Free Play Days offerings and the massive Xbox Lunar New Year Sale to check out!
Here's what we're playing this weekend:

It'll come as no surprise to hear that I'm in a DOOM mood after the Xbox Developer Direct this week! As a result, I've dipped back into Xbox Game Pass and re-downloaded DOOM (2016) to try and properly play through it this time. Yes, I've played bits of it in the past, but never really dug into the full campaign - and Eternal will be next.
Beyond that, it's the usual candidates for me, although Rock Band 4 and Fortnite Festival are getting more playtime than usual as I'm testing out the Riffmaster Wireless Guitar for review. You'll see that review very soon, but if you want a bit of a spoiler, I'm glad to report that I'm having a great time with it so far!
Oh, and I'll definitely be trying some more Ninja Gaiden 2 Black - probably via Xbox Cloud Gaming.
Have a good weekend, folks!
Liam Doolan, Staff Writer
I'm pumped about Xbox after that Developer Direct and have been reliving Ninja Gaiden 2 following the release of Ninja Gaiden 2 Black on Game Pass this week. I'm also looking forward to Ninja Gaiden 4 (due out Fall 2025) and it will be interesting to see how it turns out with the team behind Bayonetta (PlatinumGames) co-developing it alongside Team Ninja.
Apart from Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, I think I'm also in the mood for another dose of DOOM after all the new footage and information about DOOM: The Dark Ages this week. So yeah, I'll be in Hell for the rest of the weekend if you need me.
Game on, everyone!
What are you playing on Xbox this weekend? Let us know down in the comments below.

A lot of civ 6 recently. I will also mix in some flight sim 24 and hoping to finish off pokemon scarlet from last week.
Im itching to do another run through doom 2016 and eternal but might not get to it this weekend.
Persona 4 Arena Ultimax which I never managed to finish back in the day, Gladius thanks to the glorious retrocompatibility and RetroRealms: Ash vs Evil Dead.
I'm tempted to go back to Ninja Gaiden too.
I'm going to have a go at some of my long time Xbox back log because my storage is getting a bit thin.
So I'm playing Quantum Break and so far it is fine. I see the ambition and you can see where Control came from but it isn't at the same level.
I’ve been focusing on The Plague Tale Requiem - whats surprising me, having played it once at release, is how good it is. Even if I remember the story, if not all the details, its really gripping me again. Amazing!
Hitman world of assassination, picked it up in the week so I'll be working through the 3 campaigns
This weekend I'll be playing Tales of Graces f Remastered and Granblue Fantasy Relink on PS5(maybe some Black Myth: Wukong too, gotta get past that one boss in the Pagoda Realm), Ninja Gaiden 2 Black on Xbox and on Switch I'll continue playing Cassette Beasts and Balatro, maybe I'll read some more Citizen Sleeper, on Switch, aswell.
I'll be on the new ninja gaiden never played any of the games before but tried this last night and I'm loving it and I'll play some Indiana Jones aswell!
Happy weekend peoples!!
Been enjoying season 7 of Diablo 4 & will continue on with my druid. Also picked up Robocop & Biomutant in the current sale so will make a start with one of those over the weekend.
I'll be playing NG2 Black and in between the controller breaking frustration, some Cocoon. Followed by the customary few rounds of Infinite mp.
Not Ninja Gaiden 2 for dang sure. All the tease for another remake let alone a lousy "AA" Koei game. "Koei Tecmo, our games are almost fun." How about Xtreme 4 or Tecmo frickin' Bowl? "Nope, here is a remake of a remake nobody and we mean nobody was clamoring for "
Infinity Nikki, obviously.
I’m continuing to get my ass handed back to me in wukong 😂
Happiness abounds! I made a plethora of changes to Indy and played some last night with no motion sickness. I was really enjoying it when I had to stop, so I intend to play it all weekend.😀
I finished Star Wars Outlaws, but I didn't complete all side missions, so I intend to return as I love the world they created.
Whatever you are playing this weekend, I hope you have fun!
This weekend I’ll be obsessively playing Unicorn Overlord. I bought it when it first came out and didn’t enjoy it because I wasn’t used to not actively controlling my party members in combat situations. However, the more I played the more I understood how the game operates.
It’s the sub stories within the main narrative that really gripped me, such as The Tormented Helm. It was excellent, and provided a very foreboding scene, along with great moment-to-moment character interactions and fun battle encounter. While the main story is good, it isn’t great. Essentially, it’s serviceable.
Furthermore, tinkering with your party compositions, equipment, and wandering the world - everything has a purpose. Side quests are meaningful, from a monetary perspective, along with characters being added to your party, and backstories. You get to learn more history between characters and it all feels organic. Additionally, the game is continually rewarding. There is a sense of progression even from the monotonous tasks, and creates a gameplay loop that makes you want to complete everything you stumble across.
The art style is some of the very best I’ve ever seen. Each backdrop is brimming with unique locales, from vibrant and lush forests, to shining palaces, and decrepit ruins. If there is fog or a sandstorm it is visible within the battlefield. The animations between combat, conversation and traversal are gorgeous, and with the game being almost entirely voice acted, it feels as if the stakes are higher and more emotion is seeped through to the characters.
All of that said, the game is quite overwhelming. The more you acquire party members, the more it can feel daunting when changing out equipment, leveling up certain characters that aren’t getting enough attention, unlocking more grid-base tiles and spaces on them. But that’s also the fun of it — figuring things out. And damn if it’s not satisfying when you discover a good composition of party members.
Unicorn Overlord is just incredible. It has its hooks in me. I’m thinking about this game while I’m at work, thinking of new party stratagems, managing my units with certain equipment, how I want their combat to play out with certain conditions. I’m head over heels for this game, and I don’t know why I had any doubt to begin with considering Vanillaware’s pedigree.
On a side note: I also got the platinum in Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl and Stellar Blade in the last couple of weeks.
@Titntin agreed the world of outlaws is superb. I feel that game got an unfair reception when it launched. Thought it was brilliant myself!
Trying to engage into the FF Rebirth PC port and new Tokyo Extreme Race, just waiting for the salary to drop and pick up Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, holy moly 23rd January will be a day to remeber, for me at least, 3 incredible games releasing at the same time
More Stalker 2. The story has taken me to the west of the map, closer to Pripyat, and safe to say the danger has ramped up. However, I am now much better equipped and armed. Still very much enjoying it - it feels like the Fallout game we clearly won’t get in this console generation.
That Direct was something wasn’t it? Got me really excited for Xbox in the run up to Summer.
With Spider-Man 2 and its platinum firmly in the rear view mirror I can safely say I don’t need any more Insomniac or superheroes for a good long while. If I do get any gaming time I’ll be edging closer to 100% in Indiana Jones and The Great Circle, absolutely love this game even if some of the collectibles and icons are a mess.
Happy gaming, friends 👍
I’m playing a good amount this weekend. My main focus is Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. I’ve been playing Lies of P on Steam Deck. I also fired up Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, which plays as beautifully as I remember. Finally, I played a game that i believe I’m the only person on the planet that enjoys it, Crackdown 3. It’s considered an awful game, but I have fun every time I play it.
Playing a handful of indie games right now, including new release Ender Magnolia, Brotato, Brothers: A tale of two sons remake, and may give new GP release Starbound a go. Also downloaded Ninja Gaiden 2 black last night. Never played a NG game before so not sure what I’m in for yet.
@Brigurugi Koei Tecmo’s Ninja Gaiden games are some of the best action games ever made. Respectfully, I couldn’t disagree more.
World of Warcraft Classic (PC) Still going through the Barrens on my Tauren Shaman, I forgot how long this zone takes to run through everything. Currently level 18. I might run some Ragefire Chasm tonight if I can find a group.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle (Series X) Just about done with Giza. I just have a few ancient relics to collect then I just need to finish up the main quest line to proceed. Still really enjoying this game.
I've been playing Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth on Legend to finsh up the final 3 achievements I need (all around finishing new game+). I beat the game last year when it released and its still a fantastic game!
Mass Effect Legendary, never finished them before. I really missed out on this series.
Wwe 2k24 and Visions of Mana on xbox
DQIII HD2D on switch.
Ninja Gaiden 2 for me too. Already booted it up to see what it's like (jumping over from NG Sigma) and the visuals are stunning.
Hello there fellow gamers.
I´ll be playing the awesome Ninja Gaiden 2 Black.
That is all...... Ok, maybe some Street Fighter 6 online as well.
Cheers everyone and happy gaming weekend to us all
Started the weekend with buying too many games but really enjoying the Lego Harry Potter remaster… I do think that I will try Doom 2016 and bashing my head against Brotato level 4. I thought my backlog was bad before but it’s embarrassing at this point…
I’m playing NG2 but I don’t know how much of it I can take. It feels ancient AF with the jank and terrible camera.
Playing through Mario 3D World with my daughter, but after bedtime I’ll continue on Dead Space and Ninja Gaiden 2 Black.
I’m back baby! Just got my Series X (third one this gen, yeah I’ve bounced around quite a bit since 2020 lol). Can’t wait to get stuck into some Game Pass goodness, as well as the games that I bought a while back.
This weekend I’m finishing the glorious Alan Wake 2 on PS5 (meh console tbh) and I absolutely love this game. Remedy are geniuses. Have a good one everyone! Oh and Xbox is NOT dead!
Im currently playing The Division 2, After that I'm gonna jump into Ninja Gaiden Black 2..
@Odium Crackdown 3 isn't awful, it's a very fun game, I even have all the achievements for it too. The game is even better when you play co-op
I suffered a gruesome looking injury yesterday while cooking and have now lost the use of the middle finger on my right hand due to strapping/bandages. So unfortunately I'll be getting zero game time in this weekend.
I did have plans to crack on with WRC & have a look at Ninja Gaiden Black though.
Hopefully I'll be able to grip a pad by midweek 😐
Happy gaming everyone!
@OnePunchDante I meant to say it’s considered to be an awful game. I’m with you, I love it. It has its jankiness, but that’s part of the fun with it. When I want something mindless to jump into just to have fun, that’s one of my main go to games. I haven’t tried co-op yet, most people I game with either hate it or haven’t played it.
@The-Grezzly-Bear That sucks dude. Best wishes on a speedy and full recovery.
Microsoft Wordament (Android) - Adventure mode and Dailies as usual.
Gravity Guy (Windows Phone) - Nearly done with it now.
Microsoft Minesweeper (Windows Phone) - This is still a blast(Pun intended ).
@FarmDog08 it does suck.
But it means I've got out of doing loads of jobs around the house for this weekend at least 😂
Having a blast with Ninja Gaiden 2 Black on my Series X. Thanks GamePass!!!
Dear friend @Isolte
As you know "Nioh 2" is among the best games ever developed.
Please enjoy
I am playing non-stop
1 - Warhammer 40.000 DarkTide
2 - Grim Dawn (with all DLC's)
3 - Little Big Planet 3
@The-Grezzly-Bear Silver linings...silver linings...
Just a bit of Indiana Jones for me this weekend
@Kraven I haven’t played Unicorn Overload, but it’s always great to see a fellow gamer with such passion and enthusiasm for a game 🙂
Playing Lonely Mountains, Snow Riders this weekend. Such a cool game. And some Ninja Gaiden 2 Black. I can confirm I suck as much at that game now, as I did when I played NG on the original Xbox all those years ago. Happy gaming.
@Isolte Great plan. If you find the time try to play though all endings, it really ads something special to the experience.
Dear @Isolte
Thank you my friend.
Grim Dawn is so much fun. Especially in these winter days
By the way,
"Nioh 2" nothing but pure joy. It is all about progressing step by step (without rushing) and making our warrior stronger and stronger, along with our guardian spirits (thanks to amazing soul cores).
By the way, which skill did you chose for your character?
Ninja gaiden 2 Black. Game plays super and it looks amazing with the updated graphics!
Just finished Mafia definitive edition saturday morning, fun little game, linear but with a good story. Just bought Star wars outlaws on sale and planning to start my journey this morning in a galaxy far far away.
Dear @Isolte
Ok.
I platiniumed both "Nioh 1" and "Nioh 2"
Therefore, please feel free to advise if you need any assistance and/ or companion. I can re-install them and help you.
Both great games...
Dear friend @Isolte
As long as you level up constantly and keep upgrading your weapons should be fine (on the first run).
You'll be able to make your guardian spirit stronger from "new game +" onwards.
You won't believe how invincible you'll become.
Enjoy!
Well here we go with another interesting WAYP. The week was some new games and more of the GOTY hunt again. Should be wrapping that GOTY hunt this week too. Trails Through Daybreak, Metaphor and some Mario and Luigi and WWE2K24. Got to start that Tales of Graces F Remastered and I mean it sure is fun so far if not a little slow. Very cute game tho with very charming character designs. Most of the weekend was spent with GTAV. Yeah that’s right GTAV. Had a hankering to go back to it and honestly was pretty busy most of the weekend so I figured why not. Yeah I got that copy of Donkey Kong Country Returns HD amd GameStop finally got my copy of Dynasty Warriors Origins in but I had a cute amazing like a dream date in NYC so I’d dare say I had more fun doing that then I would ever have had with either of those games. Got to go to a Genshin pop up store in Times Square which factors in later. Rest of the weekend I’m thinking is gonna be some YS Memoire The Oath in Felghana or some of the story mode of WWE2K24. Maybe some Infinity Nikki or even a freshly redownloaded Genshin too. Yeah honestly my super cute super amazing date has inspired me to get back into and hopefully keep up with and enjoy Genshin and it’s story. Speaking on that date I also got to complete my FFXIV artbook collection and grab a Fire Emblem Heroes Japanese Artbook import. Man I really want a new Fire Emblem game ahaha. Otherwise I’m thinking this week is mostly gonna consist of some Trails Through Daybreak, Emio, Dawntrail, Metaphor, YS, Mario and Luigi Brothership, Super Mario Party Jamboree, Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake and WWE 2K24. Try to start Donkey Kong Country Returns HD and Dynasty Warriors Origins too. Yeah I didn’t finish Emio last week like I said but maybe we can get a two for one shot of Emio and Metaphor this week. Here’s hoping. Preordered Atelier Yumia and am looking to preorder Claire Obscura: Expedition 33 and Doom: The Dark Ages too. The wrestling thing this week being the WWE Royal Rumble. Yeah the event I’ve been looking to the most since getting into wrestling I can’t wait to see the surprise returns or debuts in the Men’s and Women’s Royal Rumble matches as well as the two currently other announced matches for the PLE that being DIY VS MCMG for the Tag Team Championships and Cody Rhodes Vs Kevin Owens for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship. Shoutout to the press event for WWE 2K25 they’re gonna do this week too as well as the more recent Saturday Nights Main Event. Hey whenever we can see Rhea Ripley is always a good time man hahaha. Anime of the week gotta go to Dragon Ball Daima and Shangri La Frontier and Solo Leveling and 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really Love You and OKITSURA: Fell in Love with an Okinawan Girl, but I Just Wish I Know What She's Saying and Sakamoto Days. Winter Picks are in yeah and I absolutely love basically all my choices but I really love Sakamoto Days. Its like the new Spy X Family. Podcasts of this week gotta go to Castle Superbeast, Big Think Dimension, Into The Aether, RPGsites Tetracast, Minnmax, Jeff Gerstmann, Kit and Krysta, Last Stand Media, Easy Allies, Second Wind, Nextlander, Cultaholic Wrestling, Weapon Wheel Podcast and Remap Radio. As always yall stay safe, be cool to each other. Have a totally amazing weekend and of course Happy Gaming.
