Welcome to the weekend! We've got new Xbox Game Pass titles, Free Play Days additions and a whole bunch of Spooky Sale deals on the Xbox Store to take advantage of over the next few days - there's plenty to be getting on with!
Here's what we're playing this weekend:
Fraser Gilbert, Editor
I am shattered this week! It's been a long few days working mostly on my own on Pure Xbox, so I haven't really got around to playing anything from Monday to Friday - it's just been one of those work-and-sleep kind of situations! Therefore, I've got a backlog of stuff that I potentially might dig into on Saturday and Sunday.
I'm definitely in wrestling mood right now, so WWE 2K25 may get my attention, and I still haven't really had a chance to dig into Atomfall much yet. There's also another game that I'm hoping to get access to before Sunday night - it's coming to Xbox soon and I'm pretty excited for it - so perhaps that'll end up getting most of my attention.
Have a great weekend, folks!
What are you playing on Xbox this weekend? Let us know down in the comments below.

PlayStation 5Pro - completed Uncharted 5 last night, not as good as 4 but it warmed up after the halfway point. Next up R&C Rift Apart, more God of War and Wipeout Omega Collection. Also need to check out RoboCop on PS Plus.
XSX - looking forward to South of Midnight next week but until then F1 2024, AoE4, and Forza Horizon 4 (just realised that’s quite a few 4s)
Have a good one everyone.
The only thing I've been playing lately is Assassin's Creed Shadows of which I'm loving every second. It's an amazing game with beautiful relaxing moments one second and crazy action-packed situations the next.
I'm something like 80 hours in, and I haven't had enough. I'm trying to do everything. There's quite a few really good side-quests that are very cinematic and just epic. There's also some funny ones.
And the combat never gets old. The main missions are awesome too, and raiding kofuns is always a nice change of peace.
I also like the parkour with Yasuke to be honest! It ends up being like a puzzle sometimes!
Have gone back to Borderlands 3, now it's on gamepass might encourage some of my friends to jump on, also trying to Japan finished in World War Z, that level is such a pain
Path of Exile 2 early access mostly I expect. A new patch just dropped with a new class (The Huntress) and enough changes elsewhere that I am interested enough to want to play it again.
Also want to find some time to properly check out Minecraft Preview (on Series X & PS5.) They also just dropped a new patch with the vibrant visuals & happy ghast content that was recently announced at their live event.
Elden ring for me playing through shadow of the erdtree!
I'll also be on Callisto protocol GTA v and maybe some Witcher 3.
Happy weekend people ✌️
Avowed...still! Been playing since day 1. Just got to the Galawain's Tusks area.
This weekend I'm gonna be playing Atelier Yumia, Guilty Gear Strive and Balatro on Series X, The First Berserker: Khazan on PS5 and on Switch I'll most likely play Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet.
@Feffster Uncharted 5? Hmmm...
I'm playing The Last of Us 2 part II on PC. Such a shame that they didn't release these games on Xbox. That's why they'll have no money from me.
The game is obviously fire though, but I knew that already.
XSX-Saints Row (2022) and I'm going to try Resident Evil 7.
Finally got round to starting Metaphor: ReFantazio, which I am very much enjoying. Currently about 32 hours into it, so I'm not sure how much longer I have left to go...
@RamiBalek - sorry, I just think of it as number 5 - I meant Lost Legacy.
I’ve not played TLOU p2 yet - just the first game, which I really enjoyed. You’re right, these games should be on Xbox too and would sell really well. Not going to happen anytime soon though and you can see why Sony don’t want to do that. I’ll pick up TLOU p2 on sale somewhere down the road, likely on 5Pro but who knows, maybe I’ll end up playing it on PS6 or even XBPrime if the PC version works on there.
What's The First Berserker: Khazan like, @Fishysensei?
No idea how you can play so many different games without finishing one first though! I forget where I'm at if I leave a game for more than a day as it is, without trying to remember 5 different games... 😂
@Fiendish-Beaver
Well, truth be told, I currently don't really have any game I am super-focused on so I just play shorter sessions here and there until I find something that clicks with my mood.
That, plus two of the games are literally ones I play when I want to turn off my brain and relax(Balatro and Guilty Gear) so I do not count them as games I need to concentrate on but that's just how my brain functions. 😅
As for Khazan?
I'd say it's basically a much better take on Nioh's general formula but with bigger emphasis on Sekiro-style deflects and with a much better combat system than the one in Nioh, it just takes some getting used to it's particular rhythm.
Of the two bosses I've defeated so far, both have been challenging but fun as hell to learn the patterns for.
But it's still too early for me to form any substantial opinions on the game other than that I like it a lot.
Finished AC Shadows last night, great game
Will start Atomfall this evening.
Having finished Avowed which was awesome (my favourite so far this year), I was planning to play Atomfall but the sound issue made me pause this until sorted. I'll be getting back to my Yakuza backlog, SW Outlaws and some FM racing.
Happy gaming everyone.
Nothing so far , we are having a bbq
Monster Hunter Wilds and Disney Dreamlight Valley. Might throw in Street Fighter 6.
I've finally finished Avowed and thoroughly enjoyed it!
I've been playing ' prince of Persia the lost crown' today and it's really excellent, well crafted with lots of options to tune it to your abilities. So far it's fantastic.
I'm downloading Assassin's Creed Shadows now that I've finished Avowed as my new virtual world to get lost in 😄
Whatever you are playing this weekend, I hope you have fun!
AC Shadows, which I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with. Love exploring Japan, and the combat is great, but then I look at the objectives board with countless people I have to kill and roll my eyes.
South of Midnight Really enjoying this so far. The game looks absolutely gorgeous, story is good, and the voice acting is excellent. I understand some criticisms about repetitive combat. The skill tree isn’t that big, so can imagine fighting potentially getting a little boring after several hours. We’ll see.
Also bought Hard reset redux this week in a sale (under £2!), which seems like a fun FPS.
I'm still on 33 Immortals. Not because I'm necessarily enjoying it anymore, more of i really can only play 1 game at a time and don't want to start anything that I won't be able to finish before South of Midnight drops (I didn't pay for early access). So I'm just mindlessly running the dungeons to kill the time
That makes more sense to me, @Fishysensei, though I still struggle to deal with more than one game at a time.
I'm glad The First Berserker: Khazan sounds like a decent game. I played about 10 minutes of the demo and decided there and then to pre-order the game. I'm currently playing Metaphor, and will probably be doing so for another week yet before I finish it. Whether I play Khazan next I'm not sure, as I also want to play Assassin's Creed Shadows, which I also pre-ordered, and am yet to start!
So many good games right now, @Titntin. I pre-ordered both Shadows and Prince of Persia, and am yet to start either of them, plus I want to play Avowed and South of Midnight. Just way too many decent games about right now...
Will be finishing off Atomfall although I did play some of the original XCOM this morning on Steam and Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
I just wish I could play through 2009 Wolfenstein by Raven on the Series X as I've still got my physical 360 version.
@Sol4ris - I noticed a patch for Atomfall earlier this week….not sure if anyone knows if that fixed the sound issues?
I’ve been playing short sessions of Monster Train and Dead Cells but have to finish Harold Halibut before it goes…. Have a great weekend y’all!
Avowed (Series X) Starting to get into Emerald Stair. So.far I did a few of the main quests and a couple of the side quests. I think now I will tackle a few bounties.
WWE 2K24 (Series X) Continuing onward with GM Mode.
EA College Football 24 (Series X) Decided to start a Road to Glory play through. Currently a quarterback for Boise State.
@Feffster
Oh, thank you very much 😊. I'll check it out.
@Fiendish-Beaver
ikn, too many! I've pre ordered expedition 33 as I want to keep it and my wife wants to play it, and also pre ordered Forza horizon 5 on ps5 despite owning it on steam and having played it on game pass. I can play it multiple times and it will stop the misses moaning about the controller. With any luck it will be slightly better on the pro too.
In the mean time I've only just finished Indy and Avowed and we have South of Midnight too. No wander I don't want switch 2 yet, I've no time to play it!
Avowed and Xcx
Microsoft Wordament (Android) - Adventure mode and Dailies as usual.
Final Fantasy (Windows Phone) - I'm finally in the endgame now.
Droplitz Delight (Windows Phone) - Still playing here and there.
Avowed. THEN SOME MORE AVOWED.
Wish I could say I'm playing Oblivion this weekend, but that rumour didn't pan out and as much as I wanna play it, I don't want to boot up the original with the remake hopefully coming soon.
That said, I have nothing to play at the moment. I finished Avowed and nothing else worthwhile has come out yet this year. Just been dabbling in Powerwash Simulator and American Truck Simulator while I wait for something interesting to launch.
Mass Effect 2. Legendary edition. Having a go at hardcore mode
Does the Series X not play 360 discs, @Sy-B? I have around 200 360 games on disc, but haven't attempted to play any of them on my X. I am fortunate enough to still have 5 (yes FIVE!*) Xbox 360s still in my possession, but none of them are currently set up.
And the reason for so many 360's is that I have 4 different Collector's versions... 😉
@Fiendish-Beaver
Not all X360 games are playable on Series X/S, sadly.
Out of 2,155 games that were released for Xbox 360, there are "only" 632 games that are.
Wolfenstein from 2009 is not among them.
And out of those 632 games, some are only playable if you have the disc version, primarily ones that never got digital versions, examples include Batman: Arkham Origins and F.E.A.R.
Thank you, @Fishysensei. Unfortunately, I own Wolfenstein on disc, but then fortunately, I own both the latter two you mention on disc too.
So for maybe the 2nd time in decades I'm playing a free weekend game. I roped in a few friends to try Age of Wonders 4, we set up a lobby and are playing PBEM - my fellow geriatrics will know that is play by email. The idea being none of us have any time, so we'll run a campaign, you get an email when it's your turn, and it should be a fun slow burn of a turn or 2 per day for months if we buy it. Loving it, the faction creation alone is worth the price of admission. Half of us on PC and half on Xbox, gotta love crossplay.
@Fiendish-Beaver I rolled credits at 104 hours. I do sit and watch all conversations though. Wonderful game with a great ending which is very much appreciated after spending that much time.
I like the wikipedia back compat list better than the Microsoft one, I find it easier to peruse.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_backward-compatible_games_for_Xbox_One_and_Series_X/S
I've mentioned a few games, @Jenkinss, but I'm guessing that you are talking about the game that I said I am currently playing, which is Metaphor. I'm loving the game, and like yourself, I watch / read all the conversations. I also like to search absolutely everywhere, and collect every thing there is to be found. Had 3 or 4 nasty surprises when opening chests though, and I hate being caught off guard! I like every enemy to be stunned to begin with where possible, so those damn chests can be a right issue... 😂
That really is an interesting way of playing, @Jenkinss, though I assumed that these days people would not still be doing it that way. I have over 60,000 unread emails, so it probably wouldn't work for me! 🤣
I might be able to do WhatsApp though, so I might suggest something similar to my mates... 😊
Just finished up Avowed. I really enjoyed the world design and hunting for secrets, but I can't say the story grabbed me very much.
Now I'm waiting for South of Midnight to unlock. I was debating getting the Early Access upgrade, but decided against it. Aside from playing early, really the only other thing that interests me from this bundle is the soundtrack and that's available on streaming services.
So I decided to wait and instead jumped into the "Ancient Gods Pt. 2" expansion for Doom Eternal, which I hadn't played yet. It's really fun and really hard and I'm having a blast. Can't wait for Doom: The Dark Ages!
Happy Sunday everyone!
Hunt Showdown all weekend
Assassin's Creed "Shadows!" LOVE this game!
Well here we go with another absolutely amazing WAYP. The week was some awesome games all around. Mostly Trails Through Daybreak, Mario and Luigi, Monster Hunter Wilds, Pirate Yakuza, WWE2K25, Dynasty Warriors Origins, Donkey Kong Country Returns HD, Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Atelier Yumia. All of those games continue to be absolute bangers and a pleasure to work on while absorbing all the Switch 2 news. Yes I’m excited as all the rest of you for it I’m really hoping to be able to get one Day 1. Most of the weekend was spent with….. nothing. Yeah GF was over again this weekend but we kinda just enjoyed the beautiful weather and nice meals and all that. Rest of the weekend im thinking is gonna be Monster Hunter Wilds. Think I may be coming close to the end of the story of that game? I dunno but without spoilers the way the story’s going I would think we would be getting ready to fight or at least put a name to and encounter the Flagship Monster of this game. Otherwise I’m thinking this week is mostly gonna consist of some Trails Through Daybreak, Mario and Luigi Brothership, Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, Tales of Graces F Remastered, Split Fiction, Donkey Kong Country Returns HD, Dynasty Warriors Origins, Monster Hunter Wilds, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Disgaea 7 and Pirate Yakuza. Still wanna wanna try to start Xenoblade Chronicles X Definitive Edition but work just keeps getting in the way. I really wanna start it tho because man did I miss this game and I’m kinda jealous seeing people like Alana and Gonçalo talk about it. Plus I’d love to get the work started on it like now so the backlog is less before Switch 2. Also wanna pick up Tekken 8 again with the Season 2 update and Anna being added and all that. Think maybe we could get Tifa in Season 2 as well. The wrestling thing this week being AEW Dynasty. Yeah we going with AEW this weekend but to their credit we literally have a PPV as this WAYP is being written. Hopefully some cool things happen throughout what with stars like Toni Storm and Swerve Strickland there. Anime of the week gotta go to Solo Leveling, 100 Girlfriends and Shangri La Frontier. Got my spring anime picked out too I think so I gotta get those Winter ones finished up so I can get the Spring ones underway before they get going too much. Podcasts of this week gotta go to Castle Superbeast, Big Think Dimension, Into The Aether, RPGsites Tetracast, Minnmax, Jeff Gerstmann, Kit and Krysta, Punching Up, Easy Allies, Second Wind, Nextlander, Cultaholic Wrestling, Weapon Wheel Podcast and Remap Radio. As always yall stay safe, be amazing to each other. Let’s hope we can all get a Switch 2. Have a totally safe and amazing weekend and of course Happy Gaming.
