Last year's Xbox Developer Direct event laid down a big marker for 2023 on the platform. The show focused on what Microsoft was hoping to put out that year, and by and large, the team stuck to its plan. However, as we near 2024's event later this week, the next 12 months still seem very up in the air for Xbox - and we can't help but speculate further about what's to come!
Last year we kind of knew everything that was likely to drop ahead of time, but this year is still largely a mystery. Xbox is expected to be aiming for 2024 for each and every game showcased at Dev Direct this week, but there's still so much else that could feasibly happen over the next 12 months or-so.
As most Pure Xbox readers won't have forgotten, Activision Blizzard x Xbox is still an ongoing process - a process that's hopefully going to deliver some tangible results in the near future. We're still waiting on that big Xbox Game Pass drop, not to mention news on the next Call of Duty and whatever else the teams are cooking up over there. None of this will be at Developer Direct, as confirmed by Microsoft, but ActiBlizz will still likely have a massive impact on Xbox's 2024.
And then, we have plenty of other bits and pieces scattered around all over the place. Today's news about Stalker 2 has reminded us that we have another major Xbox exclusive due to drop soon (albeit a third-party launch exclusive), and then recently, Xbox's South of Midnight was also loosely confirmed to be targeting 2024 - although that's perhaps less likely now that the game isn't announced for Developer Direct. If both of those happen alongside the four Dev Direct titles, then we have a massive year ahead - we'll have to wait and see!
Of course, each year comes with its own surprises, and so we're also trying to expect the unexpected over the next 12 months too. Plenty of Xbox's internal studios have been very quiet in recent years — alongside silence from the likes of Contraband — and you never know, we might see another Pentiment or Grounded appear out of nowhere to further bulk-out Xbox's 2024 lineup.
Having said all of this, what are you hoping to see from Xbox over the next year? Even if it's not a game release specifically, are there any big moves you're anticipating before 2025 rolls around? Who knows, there might be another big acquisition saga to talk about by year's end!

Gears of War 6.
Gears Tactic 2.
The Marcus Fenix Remastered Collection.
Anything else is a bonus... 😉
Double Fine to drop a game this Thursday. Ava to get a console release. Hellblade 2 and Avowed locked on for this year, Indy targeting this year and then Towerborne, Flight Sim 24 and a Quake 3/Hexen remaster to finish things off nicely for Team Green.
The next game from ID please
I think South of Midnight is going to be a shadow drop in the Direct, the game now has a Xbox store listing.

My thoughts exactly, @Kaloudz...
Keep doing what they have been doing, they are on a good track right now. Deliver on the games they have already announced and don't announce games 4+ years away again.
Biggest change I would ask for is if games aren't 100% ready then delay them again until they are. We've seen too many high profile Xbox releases that could have done with more time in the oven like Halo: Infinite, Forza Motorosport, Starfield, Redfall, etc. You only get one chance to make a great first impression.
I would love to see some quality of life improvements. Stuff like Dolby Atmos being fixed so we’re able to use it without a massive delay.
@Fiendish-Beaver Exactly definitely something gears related if not they might aswell sell the ip to Sony as they undervalue it so much compared to halo but then again they are talking about making gears 6 open world which would ruin it just like halo infinite was ruined which was basically far cry in a halo skin
@Grumblevolcano hmmmmm
Something Gears related.
Fable.
Elder Scrolls: Oblivion Remaster
Something shadow-dropped.
Series x kettle
Series s coffee machine
New AAA games that compete for overall quality in all areas with Nintendo and Sonys best achievements.
And being blunt not at the Redfall, Forza and even Starfield level. They need to rise above that level and blow me out the water.
Since they have so many studios now I would love to see them do a 1 or 2 week game jam where each studio makes a small game based on an Xbox IP. Can be anything. And if something ends up catching on then it could get a budget behind it. Double Fine knows how to do these
Even if nothing gets a full dev it would still be a fun experiment. Could end up with a Halo puzzle game, Banjo metroidvania etc.
I'm really looking forward to seeing what Indiana Jones is like. Fingers crossed for 3rd person, with Tomb Raider or Uncharted style gameplay. Hellblade 2 release date would also be the cherry on tip from the developer direct.
For the rest of the year from Xbox, just a steady flow of releases in game pass and continued support from 3rd party studios
It’s no good relying on third parties to bring the best from the series x, like Elden ring and graphically something like Avatar. You can play them on PC and more importantly PS5.
Xbox know the formula they did it in the Xbox360 days. Even if they went full publisher and no hardware you still up against other third party games and other console exclusives to achieve good sales of your game. Do we really think Redfall, Forza and even Starfield would have sold that many if available on PS5 or Switch(not that switch could run the games)so maybe switch 2.
It’s all about your games be it hardware or just a publisher, or game pass subscriptions, you still got to make great games to sell them.
Looking forward to seeing Halo Infinite continue to be the best way to play modern Halo.
Also would like to see where Halo as a franchise goes next. If the rumours are true of course.
i would love a console version of world of warcraft with full controller support.
Hellblade and Avowed are all I need.
This is simple. More games like Ghost of Tsushima, God of War, The Last of Us and Uncharted. These are the best games. A good story with single player action and upgradable/skill trees are the best. Less Souls-like games, less FPS games, and more 3rd person single player story campaign games with lots of collectibles and areas to explore in the open world/semi open world that give us an amazing experience to play by yourself.
Hellblade II is all I need.
@NarutosBiggestFan exactly this!
I'd like to see some sort of a deal done that brings Ubisoft+ to gamepass just like EA Play.
They've proven they can do business when they sold the actiblizz streaming rights to Ubisoft so surely they can work something out?
I have massive hopes for the Indiana game, exploring action and adventure are my favourite games.
If they can nail it at top quality then I’m in for a real treat and can’t wait. If we get sub par and the others are sub par within reason of course, then I will be almost convinced they can’t compete at the same level of quality, if we like it or not with Sony and Nintendos top games. And that will be a shame for me. Apart for some reason the Forza Horizon series, keeps a very high level and chosen by some critics as the top of the tier open world racer.
But I really hope they can, as more top AAA games on the market the better it is for me and for competition. Come on Xbox nail these games to be some of the finest games there are.
Games, games, games... updated controller with hall sticks, games, games, games
@The-Grezzly-Bear I reckon that's their workaround for the whole "Ubisoft get the cloud rights for Activision games" deal. Oh look Gamepass ultimate gives you access to Ubisoft cloud games.
Looking forward to seeing all the 1st party releases this year, especially avowed.
It will be interesting to see how they intergrate ABK over the year too, and if they finally comfirm a new Banjo game!
I’m hoping for South of Midnight. It looks more appealing to me than anything else currently slated for 2024, minus perhaps Avowed. Depends on Avowed looks later this week. I’m hoping that this year we finally see an update on Everwild and other games that have already been in development for more than five years. It’s going to be a solid year for Gamepass, that’s already confirmed.
Really hoping for a shadow drop at the Developer Direct.
Also, I’m really curious to see what happens once Activision goes full on Xbox, and the ramifications of that. I’m hoping Diablo, Starcraft, Warcraft, and pretty much all vintage Blizzard sneaks onto Gamepass.
@abe_hikura it has to be right?
I'm not really bothered about most of the actiblizz stuff. But there's a few Ubisoft games I'd like to try out
I want to see MS actually "merge" with the companies they bought instead of this ***** hands off approach we've been getting. Why the hell do Bethesda accounts still exist? The only account I should need to play any game is the one I bought it with. MS owns Bethesda, so at the very least, their ***** should've been folded into the MS account system. Same with Activision.
Nothing particular - things will come when they come but I hope it will be a 'memorable' year for Positive reasons.
There is a 'lot' to be hopeful for and the 'memorable' year always seems to be on the Horizon but not quite within our grasp, teased but not yet realised...
So I don't want to get my 'hopes' up for a Gears trilogy or maybe Perfect Dark news, Fable or whatever games I personally want or hope for - I'll just keep enjoying whatever games I have access to - whether on Game Pass or I bought, until games I want to play 'more' release and then look back and hope it will be 'memorable' instead....
I would love some Bethesda franchise stuff to ease the wait for Elder Scrolls 6 and Fallout 5, like a full remake of Morrowind, or the rumored remasters of Oblivion and Fallout 3.
Would also love new games from other developers set in those two universes, like they did with New Vegas. Obsidian would be the obvious choice for this, but I’m sure others such as Inxile or maybe even Playground Games could do a great job.
A silksong release date it's taking forever 😥
Banjo-Kazooie remakes before a new game, something new about Fable, ABK games on Game Pass... I would love Microsoft to acquire Crystal Dynamics because it's one of the best and they came to The Initiative's rescue. They are much better than Naughty Dog in my opinion. Gears of War 6, the next Doom game, the Indiana Jones game, news about Perfect Dark 3, State of Decay 3... The future of Xbox is bright! We also should know what's next from Square Enix. Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster Collection?
Regarding multiplatform games, I need to know about the Project Zero/Fatal Frame remasters of 1, 2 and 3.
Honestly, more one off projects like hi fi. Fps games are great, as are 3rd person like GoW games. But different experiences are why I love nintendo so much. More indie gems like xbox is great at putting out there, especially on gamepass. More gears games. And finally, silksong in the first quarter. Everything else would be gravy for me.
Unrealistic of me to be sure but how about some good games? No more buying IPs and publishers and developers for awhile. Make some f**king games. The only thing my Series X has done this entire gen is be a glorified back compat machine.
Am i delusional to expect avowed at some point this year? it's one of my biggest anticiped xbox 1st party with maybe hellblade 2.
Stalker 2, At least some good news about KOTOR remake
Games without bits missing only for them to be sold laters as DLC ,we can all dream can’t we .
Gear Of War 6
State Of Decay 3
Besides what has been confirmed for the Xbox Direct, I want to see more of Contraband, Perfect Dark and Towerborne this year.
Also, would be nice having next Gears of War and maybe a Halo Infinite campaign expansion or the next Halo.
@Grumblevolcano yeah ,shadow drop a game with no gameplay trailer ,that makes total sense, well unless it's absolute garbage that is
Want a balance this year. Continue to gameplay reveals for already announced games that where announced way to early. Have several new IPs premiere. The main thing I would say is to start have more consistent release dates all across the year. They need to continue with having AAA exclusives all year long. Also focus on the teams you have now and no large acquisition, aka no publisher. If they make smaller purchases like say Asobo or even GSC game world is one thing but no publishers. Xbox needs to get into a good system for the teams they have already before buying another one.
Velocity Architecture features promised at launch that are still late to the party.
Being honest, over the last couple of years I've became a big supporter of Phil Spencer. What he's done and continues to do for gamers is incredible. His "for the gamers" attitude has really worked and he's created a great legacy.
So, in the coming year, I have full faith that xbox will deliver. We really are in a fantastic moment, and we're lucky to be part of this gaming revolution. Gamepass is amazing, and continues to give us great games and hidden gems. I'm sure that there will be a lot of ABK stuff dropping in the coming months too. And MS rewards seems to have sorted itself out, so, if we all stick at it, there's alot of good stuff we can cash our reward points in for.
Game on people!
I wanna see WoW Classic in Steam.
Gears of war 6
Avowed
Never got on with gears tactics as I don’t like turn based games.
Activision Spyro/Crash games made backwards compatible.
Alpha Protocol made backwards compatible.
More backwards compatible 360 and original xbox games in general.
