So, after years of anticipation since We Happy Few first launched almost a decade ago, Compulsion Games is back with South of Midnight; an Xbox Game Studios title now available in early access on Xbox and PC.
Yep, following the recent trend of early access DLC bundles, folks can hop into this Southern gothic adventure right now on Microsoft platforms - ahead of the main Xbox Game Pass release on April 8th. So, who's been tempted into grabbing the Premium Upgrade DLC, and what do you make of the game so far?
We've been excited about this one ever since we got our hands on it for preview back in February - in fact, South of Midnight has had us highly intrigued since its stunning debut trailer almost two years ago now. Just a few days ago, we posted the full Pure Xbox verdict on South of Midnight - and it's safe to say that we had a fantastic time playing through this new Xbox Game Studios release.
So, if you have been tempted into picking this game up in early access, what do you make of it so far? Has it been worth the years of anticipation, or were you expecting a little more from a game so long in development over at Xbox?

Played up to Chapter 4 so far and really enjoying it. Runs at a smooth 60fps
Really enjoying it, but wasn’t expecting to be hit in the feels quite so hard.
Loving the music, helps with the feels of the story in the area. Love how beautiful the art is. The combat is good but almost like not looking forward to it. Not sure how to explain that. Reminiscent to games like Soul Reaver and 360 era tomb raider if I were to make some comparisons.
I am loving it and will probably finish it this weekend 😎
@Aniscape once your done. You should play Kena: Bridge of Spirits.
@ChopperCampbell havent completed the story yet but man some topics get dark/deep and it's done in such a human non patronizing way.
@Simu001 the brother and the tree, and the song that played when you had to climb to the top was pretty heartbreaking and dark as hell.
@cragis0001
Kena was a great game. Played on Ps5 when it came out.
Another good example of a fun game and there are some similarities between the 2
@ChopperCampbell sniff damn onions 😭
@ChopperCampbell
That song took it over the top for me. I wasn’t paying attention then it started registering what they were singing about and i just got pulled in.
@Aniscape Usually I don’t spend too much time on the digital extras that come with pre-orders (this one was only £10 so decided to jump in) but on this occasion it’s been on whenever I’m not playing the game. The full soundtrack is on there, including the song about poor Benji
Just started chapter 5, and so far really enjoying it. Playing on Series X, and it looks sooooo good, some absolutely stunning environments. It’s almost criminal that there’s no photo mode! The music is great, as is the voice cast. Gradually unlocking more and more traversal abilities, though combat is nothing special.
Finally had some time to sit and play it for a couple hours. Really love the atmosphere. The voice work is excellent. Only complaint is Hazel is always in a rush! A 'slow walk' toggle or button would be amazing. I wanna look at everything. The art-style and detail is excellent! I love that this is 40$ while Nintendo wants to sell you an 80$ Mario Kart.
It does look really good this one, hopefully I’ll grab it at some point!
Another dud with almost no players in pre-launch.
@VoidPunk so the games that bad?

@Aniscape exactly. I felt the Kena connection the minute I started playing. I hoped after watching footage of South of Midnight before launch that it feels like Kena as I loved that game. I played later on Xbox. But will probably play again on my PS5 as well.
Game is great. Beat it on Saturday. Story is good, Music is great, Art + Design is Great. Gameplay is okay. Got lost in the world just walking around staring at detail. Music went from soul to jazz to big band. Was fun researching some of the folk lore they presented in the game. I usually don't get hooked into Single Player games. Definitely will be up for some awards at the end of the year.
