The Xbox One has enjoyed a lifespan that's differed to every other Xbox console so far. Over 10 years since it first released back in November of 2013, this is a system that still continues to deliver in 2023 with countless new games.
Microsoft clearly built the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S with the Xbox One in mind, incorporating an extremely similar design across all three consoles - including cross-generation features such as Smart Delivery and backwards compatibility, the latter of which extends to the entire XB1 catalogue aside from the Kinect-only titles.
Amazingly, we're also in a position where someone who bought their Xbox in 2013 can still enjoy some of the latest AAA releases such as Diablo 4, Hogwarts Legacy, EA Sports FC 24, Like a Dragon Gaiden and a whole lot more.
For some of the games that aren't natively playable on Xbox One, there's Xbox Cloud Gaming as well. All of Xbox's first-party titles in recent years have been exclusive to the Xbox Series X and Series S along with PC, but through the power of Cloud Gaming and Xbox Game Pass, they can all be streamed to Xbox One instead.
Each of these features have allowed to the Xbox One to enjoy a much longer lifespan than you might expect, and as things stand we can't see an end in sight! Sure, it makes sense to upgrade to a newer console for all kinds of reasons, but if you're just a casual fan who doesn't care much about visual improvements or frame rates, it's still a decent option.
So, is it fair to suggest the Xbox One era isn't "over" as we approach 2024, even though the Xbox Series X and S have been available for over three years now? If so, when do you think games will actually stop being produced for it? It's a system that stopped production quite a while ago, but many developers clearly haven't given up on it yet.

I consider all "eras" of Xbox to be over because Xbox has done such a great job at ensuring you can be an Xbox customer regardless of if your on the Xbox One, One S, One X, Series S, Series X, PC, smart phone, tablet, or smart TV. I sometimes access my Xbox games on the One S in my man cave, or on my PC on my 75 inch big screen, or on the go when I travel for work. So, to me, the Xbox One is every bit as relevant as it was in 2013, especially if I'm streaming games (which I love).
In all honesty I think the last gen consoles will probably get games until the day the next gen consoles come out at this rate. The install base is so large between the ps4 and xbox one I imagine most publishers and smaller developers wouldn't try to put a version out on those consoles.
Microsoft is a bit odd with their consoles at least to me. Since the Xbox One they seem not to worry about gens like Nintendo and Sony do. They almost seem to follow a system like PC where a Series X just is just an upgraded Xbox One. Its like owning a PC from around that time you can play newer games on it sure but they wont run as well and of course you can play games that came out 5 years ago for the Xbox One on a Series X/S.
@Tasuki That's the idea. Xbox has been quite clear that they want their hardware to be much like a family of hardware where your accessories, accounts, and software, all carry over to the next and that the hardware is meant to be improved upon every few years or so. Think of it like a good, better, best scenario.
They're also not looking at just the console base. In order to succeed they're going to have to expand beyond, which is the idea with game pass. Make a service where any vertical or horizontal screen can deliver the information you need via the Internet and your going to expand your user base instead of just hitting the console ceiling. Game pass was a super smart idea for Microsoft and they're set up for such a bright future with it.
I think it all depends. For me, yes it’s over. I moved on from that system and I’m onto my Series X. For my youngest, no. He still loves his Xbox One as he mostly plays free games like Fortnight. I think it depends more on the demographic you’re asking.
I only have an Xbox One so I’m happy that recent games which have been brought out are still being released on it like MW3 but I’d say because they don’t produce the consoles any longer then it’s over. Don’t forget that PS2 games were still being brought out in 2013 when the PS4 was released but I doubt people still thought of that generation as being ‘active’.
Definitely. It is over.
However, the Gamecube generation is over too and I still break that sometimes so it doesn't mean that people can't still enjoy their XBOX One's.
Yes and no. On the one hand it was discontinued all the way back in 2020, but on the other like @Tasuki said Microsoft don’t seem as interested in generations and you can play ALL Series S|X games on Xbox One via cloud.
Yes, it’s been over for what? 3 years? However, it still feels like the Series era has barely started
Don Mattrick made sure the Xbox One Era was over even before it started.
But will forever say kinect was and still is an awesome idea that got hate for all the wrong reasons.
When the platform holder has moved on, I'd say the generation is over
I was playing my ps1 this morning. I don't really consider an era ever over.
Started with Xbox one then went onto the almighty Xbox one X. I did the same with PS4 to PS4 Pro.
It’s probably why I don’t see a massive difference between this new generation and last generation.
Also probably because we started with a lot of cross generation games as well.
Playing avatar on series x in the jungle zone did make me think we have started to move on a bit now finally, especially when some of the weather effects kick in as well.
But you can then play gears 5 or hive busters on series x and they both great looking games with some good effects and environmental effects, even at todays standards.
But I have started to recently notice how top tier PCs are pulling away already from this generation of console when maxed out in a games top settings.
Slowly but surely but......
With the way the Xbox interface/eco-system is similar across two generations and maybe for the future generations I feel it is a great starting point to build an Xbox catalogue of games for those who don't care about the latest and greatest games so on that note It's hard to say to be honest.
I considered it 'over' the day the Series X released - just so happened to be the day I got my Series X. However, I consider the day they ceased production, stopped making them to be the day the 'Console' over - Anything after is 'legacy support', keeping things ticking over for those still using it - which for MS may still be worthwhile for their Game Pass Ultimate Subscribers for MANY 'years' to come - but I still consider it 'over', like the 360 era stopped when MS ceased making them, but I'm sure for some-one, its still not 'over' for them...
I leant my mate my Xbox One in February when I got a Series X. He used it to play Starfield via streaming, and we play Halo online together. You can still buy most new games for it. To me, that isn't a dead platform! There is just a newer model that plays games at a higher resolution, frame rate, etc. As somebody said above, it's a different model to what we've had in the past.
@Tasuki As mentioned, MS want you keep bringing your library forward - much like upgrading a GPU doesn't stop you playing games you bought 10yrs ago. So I do expect more an 'evolution' as such - but you also have to look at it from the other side too.
Games are built to use CPU/GPU/RAM at a basic level so ALL consoles have to have the same basic parts to run multi-platform games. 30 years ago, they were developing their own hardware and Software but most games had to be 'built' for their specific hardware.
With modern Consoles also sticking with AMD/nVidia chips that are essentially superior to their former ones, its more like the PC too in that new games are feeling like prettier, maybe more performant versions of games you played a decade ago because Story telling isn't evolving, your not really doing anything you couldn't do before - albeit with fewer polygons and lower quality textures - but still conveyed enough emotion. But really once you have full surround realistic sound, able to practically do anything from 'fly around the Globe, to have hundreds of enemies swarm you at once, there isn't much more they can 'do - other than make it look more realistic, with better lighting/physics and improve the frame rate - its up to the 'devs' now to create something you've never seen or done before to feel truly unique. I doubt you'll have that 'first time' hearing proper speech or the ability to move in 3D instead those asymmetrical attempts at simulating 3D in 2D in gaming because there can't be a 'first' they can't or haven't ben able to with Hardware - unless 'Cloud' and the potential hardware resources they 'could' use to create something unique - but I bet it will still feel more like 'evolution' than completely fresh that changes the gaming landscape
What are the “countless” games being made for it still that aren’t being made for the Series consoles
Yeah I moved on from Xbox One and PS4 for the most part. It kinda blows my mind how they are still making so many cross-gen games to this day.
It's fine they still make games for Xbox One absolutely nothing wrong with that. I like Smart Delivery but not for discs because they have done such a poor job of implementing it for Series X games.
One Xbox boxed game that shares Xbox One and Series X is a stain on the physical release.
I'd love to buy more Series X games physically but simply majority of the Series X games are NOT on the disc, which is vastly different from Switch cart or a PS5 disc.
It really makes me not care about to want to get games day one anymore on the Xbox platform.
I care now more of a game is Series X and PC in one digital purchase now.
@BacklogBrad this is true especially with people making new games for old consoles. But more of is the era of most games coming to Xbox One over?
Yeah I think we are about 6 months from the end.
Now in the next two years phasing out the Series S so developers can maximize the performance of the Series X.
@GuyinPA75 I might not fully agree but I agree with the lack of quality games that were created for Kinect technology, even 360 Kinect.
If more games would have used a controller and the camera to create newer experiences we all might be using a camera with our consoles today.
But we just didn't get those experiences, hell I'll say we got less for Kinect than we have for VR as a whole in a few years. RE4 (twice), REVillage, Astro Rescue Mission, HL Alyx just those out shine anything we got for Kinect.
@jdwight1 Not gonna happen, they will phase out S and X before just the S is gone.
This isn't just like Kinect 2.0 where it wasn't used for games they could cut it off from being needed. This is a mandate for games to work on two different hardware. Not that different from a PS4 and PS4 Pro at the end of the day, just a different situation.
It's still getting new games and being supported so the era of Xbox One is not done.
Doesn’t feel over to me. Truth be told I’ve yet to see any game that needed to be next gen. Seems all we get is slight graphical upgrades with no gameplay innovation across the industry, hard to believe we’re almost half way through this generation.
It was unofficially over two years after its release. I never touched my Xbox again after playing through Rare Replay. I'm still pissed that I never sold it and it just collected dust. It still does somewhere in the closet.
@jdwight1 The Series S isn't going anywhere since it's selling relatively well and serves as an entry point to Game Pass. I'd imagine it may get phased out once they release a Game Pass streaming stick bundled with a controller in the near future. I still believe the shelving of that project was a lie since they didn't want to bring any more attention to streaming during the ABK investigation before the deal was closed.
Bearing in mind you can play all Microsoft released games up to this point on a Xbox One (although through the cloud) I say it lives on!!
No because I’m still using my one x
Yakuza 8 is coming to One, so nope.
Yes but no, they dont make the consolrs anymore, but at the same time it still has 1 to 2tb of storage (i think theres a 2tb model?) but there's still games getting made for it. I mean, MWIII is on it!
No, because there's still games being released for Xbox One. And thanks to backwards compatibility I still play plenty of Xbox One games whether it's favorites of mine from the early part of the Xbox One cycle or games for the system that I never played before.
As I am still primarily playing xbox one games on my series x (same with ps4 games on my ps5) I am still really waiting to feel like we are playing in the next gen.
@Baler Same
@old-dad things are starting to change now but I’ve seen no reason so far to upgrade to series x
I'd say it over for the best part but the one set of consoles do still have time to go before they are totally obsolete
That future Microsoft was working toward... where the new Xbox is just an upgrade over the last, like upgrading a PC, is here. Only, I don't think anyone expected the old Xbox to continue on as old as it has, effectively competing with the latest and greatest. But here we go... not only does the system have among the greatest backwards compatibility through emulation and enhancements spanning multiple generations--its "forwards compatibility" appears to be pretty damn good as well.
I have both a Series S and a Series X, and even I sometimes wonder why--I mean, hell, I still have my Xbox One X and it still not only works so well, but it is still so relevant today. I think Microsoft really just knocked it out of the park with that one, and the lines between generations really are blurring.
@Baler I feel the same way, played the newest Xbox releases this year on PC but I do prefer console gaming so the Switch and X1X gets the most love. Hellblade 2 and Avowed will probably push me over the edge lol.
@old-dad wow I have the exact same setup and in the same situation 😆 I’d call myself middle aged dad though being 35.
@Baler haha yeah I got a few on ya being 53 but gaming is pretty much an ageless hobby.
