Since Xbox basically ghosted The Game Awards in late 2022, I've talked at length about the form of future Xbox events; asking the question of whether Xbox should go down the 'Nintendo Direct' route for upcoming showcases.
Well, that future is almost upon us, as the Xbox Developer_Direct conference takes place this coming Wednesday, and the clue is in the name - this is going to be a more direct event than we're used to seeing from Xbox.
That prospect alone, whatever we see of the games themselves, really excites me. While Xbox has come on leaps and bounds with the likes of Xbox Game Pass in recent years, the platform hasn't been great at communicating, especially when it comes to its own first-party pipeline.
Some of that communication likely comes down to the fact that these games haven't been ready to show off just yet, but still, we're getting to that stage where Xbox Game Studios is going to be bringing the games, and the company needs a more efficient way to show them all off.

What better way than a regular, direct showcase schedule? It's worked wonders for Nintendo especially in the Switch era, and Xbox regularly showing off its exclusive games as and when they're ready to be shown will be great for the fans.
Xbox has its existing studios, all of Bethesda's teams, and potentially Activision Blizzard in the coming months, so it needs to break these events up in a proper, organised manner. Xbox's summer showcases have been strong recently, but I think we just need more regular, official communication from Team Xbox.
I really like the sound of Developer_Direct as well. While we don't know all the details right now (good, I want a few surprises!), we know that the team's involved are getting the chance to talk to us directly about the games they're making, and the more direct communication we get from Xbox's dev teams the better, in my opinion,

The move also feels like a good one for the future of Xbox. If Phil & co. really can turn things around on the content front and deliver a steady stream of first-party titles on Game Pass, it only makes sense to have a regular schedule of showcases as well. I really enjoy the excitement that comes with a big Xbox Game Pass roundup, and if regular Developer_Direct showcases follow, Xbox is going to be a part of the conversation a lot more often in the coming months.
The very first Xbox Developer_Direct is almost here, then, and honestly I can't wait for it. Not just for the announcements and the gameplay reveals, but for what it could mean for Xbox going forward.
What are you most excited about at Xbox Developer_Direct? Let us know in the comments!

Excited to finally see the release dates for Redfall and Forza but more excited for game pass announcements
Heck yeah, very excited to see how it shakes out. Unfortunately, I'll be traveling for work that day and won't have time to watch live. I'll check it out after though and stay off the internet.
Xbox Direct sounds infinitely better.
Again, they need to announce specific details about, at least four, Triple A titles (exact release dates). And those four titles need to be four of the best games in gaming history - no excuses. I know some of you are going to think I'm being a bit harsh, but I'm sick of this shoddiness. It's time to Get Sh** Done! Tony Robbins once said "Stop telling me about your future goals, tell me what you're going to do today?" Do that Microsoft!
Hopefully we get some release dates for a few games. My series s hasnt been used much this past year tbh. A few games here and there, hopefull for this year though some really good games (hopefully) should be releasing.
They had better bring release dates. Time is running out.
Let’s hope it is really something special and finally we have something to shout and get excited about for in house AAA game development.
Surely Xbox can’t mess up this year.
So far MS seems waaaay too comfortable acting as the little guy in the shadow of Sony as they try to move their latest acquisition along. Time to get things moving!
I just want dates for games like Avowed and State of Decay 3 or some gameplay at least.
As much as I love my Xbox, and their attitude toward the industry (as opposed to Sony) I must say that none of the exclusives, that are supposed to be released this year excites me. I just hope that they revive Scalebound, or Lost Odyssey, even Conker. Avowed seems interesting, but seems in limbo. Let's hope for a surprise on the show.
after a rough January... lay offs, poor PR, silence on GP, 3rd best selling console even in US.
this showcase is their chance to bring it back to games and generate some excitement. hopefully too its proper vids not cgi. think they need to give info on some 24 release, just some names
I wouldn't expect much apart from deeper looks at the 4 games announced with the show. I think it's supposed to be the developer showing off those games as they release soon and a couple of release dates. I don't think it's going to be like a Nintendo direct or similar.
@Sakai Yes, this is what I'm expecting (as it's what they've said it'll be). I fear everyone is setting their expectations far too high and there's gonna be a lot of grumbling afterwards
“This year will be our year lads” is wearing thin on me.
Like others have said. Concrete info, and then dates that stick and a steady flow of really really good games.
Deep single player campaigns.
Less GaaS aspects.
They have the studios…. They had plenty of staff… less so now…. Time is to deliver.
> It's worked wonders for Nintendo especially in the Switch era...
Arguably it worked wonders in the Switch era because Nintendo has frequently used their Switch Direct events to promote indie titles alongside an internal strategy for attracting indie developers to the console in the first place.
If they don't mention why there's been less additions to GP and if they're gonna go back to how it was, I can see a mass exodus happening in February.
@Sebatrox @FatalBubbles SpawnWave wondered why this wasn't called the DirectXbox, a beautiful callback to the original codename for the first Xbox.
I’ve even seen this advertised before watching YouTube videos, it’s nice to see Xbox advertising this like that.
Admittedly I’m not interested in Redfall, I don’t like what I’ve seen so far, but I’ll give the Direct a watch. Will be nice to see how far Forza has come along.
I kind of strongly disagree that a developer direct is what Xbox marketing needs. This sounds like we will be listening to people talk and that's not what most people want from these events. Xbox is always panned after their talking heavy events.
The thing they need is release dates for first party and better marketing partnerships with third parties. These are the best parts of Sony and nintendos marketing events and what makes them feel exciting.
If this isn't big & has stuff I care about then like dezzy says Xbox will be 100% dead to me
@Sebatrox I think they probably called it developer_direct to keep expectations in check it sounds like it will be alot if talking from the devs
Everything is always coming soon. Just you wait, just be patient ,we have so much to show you at a later date, wait til next year....
They'd better nail Wednesday, or this is going to be the longest, shortest generation.....since last generation.
Yeah, my guess is that it is what they say it is. Devs talk and demo 4 games without any stealth drops or new game announcements. Hope I'm wrong though!
@lechugajr people are setting themselves up for major dissapointment in my opinion. This is not an e3 style show and was never meant to be, it's a developer direct focused on those 4 games, like they announced. People's imagination is going wild, despite MS telling them what to expect. It's quite literally in the name
Im worried that people are building up expectations that the event cant meet.
We should only be expecting the games they have advised us about and I hope they deliver that well.
A couple of game pass drops would be nice as thats been slim pickings for a couple of months.
Like many others, I hope this is the start of a more productive year for them! 😁
Trying to keep expectations in check, but their relative silence this month and little announced for Game Pass in Feb is leading to huge levels of expectation. Hopefully they aren't shooting themselves in the foot.
@Kaloudz yep! Maybe they’re going hard this year!
@Titntin I agree, I wouldn’t expect much more than the advertised games, I can see people being majorly disappointed if they expect more.
I’m looking forward to Starfields own presentation more, whenever that may be.
Counter Soapbox (dirtbox?): They were banking on Starfield being ready and the ActiBlizz merger being in the bag by now, and so they're at a loose end to show off what they have for 2023 so didn't give a big showing at the Game Awards, etc. They'd planned on slapping the "Xbox" name on everything ActiBlizz have been up to.
The Developer Direct is trying to get something out there, but will turn out to be a lukewarm look at stuff we already expected: Mojang will showcase their latest "cash cow milking mechanism", Forza will show their latest "real-time fuzzy dice physics", ESO will be exciting only to those who already play ESO, and Redfall will look fun, but will be forgotten about in a year or two.
@Kaloudz I see Xbox ads constantly. I'm in Canada, so maybe their advertising is different here than in the UK.
@Kaloudz hahaha I can say the same thing about Nintendo advertising for me. I very rarely see Nintendo ads. Xbox and PlayStation are almost daily being marketed to me in some way.
@Kaloudz Yeah that is pretty crazy. Maybe someone in the Xbox marketing department just doesn't like the UK.
I mean, we'll have to wait and see. It will be nice when an actual current game arrives. No game at this point is actually using the newer hardware after 2 years. It makes me laugh how pre-mature these consoles released.
@Would_you_kindly
If you are expecting more than release dates and deep dives into the four games already mentioned, as well as a sizzle real of game pass games... then prepare to be let down. If that is what you are expecting though, you will be happy.
The only surprise I'm hoping for is the date of the Star Field show right at the end of the show. The comments wanting stuff from Avowed, and I even saw a comment wanting 2024 titles... you are just not listening to what they have told you to expect
