How can it have been 12 months since Xbox Games with Gold departed us? Time really does fly, and in the past year we've seen its replacement - Xbox Game Pass Core - prove pretty popular amongst those who want XGP access at a cheaper price point. But for me, a regular subscriber to Ultimate, I still find myself missing Games with Gold.
And yeah, I know... the last year of the service was not particularly enticing by any means. Looking at the 17 games that were given away with Xbox Games with Gold in 2023, I think I've only played, like, three of them? Those three games I did really enjoy though, especially Star Wars Episode 1 Racer which was a fantastic blast from the past!
Go back a bit further, and there are games like Yoku's Island Express, Gears 5, Dead Rising, Portal 2 and so many others that I may not be playing regularly anymore, but I've definitely dipped into now and again. With Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster on the horizon, I'm really grateful I can still access Dead Rising thanks to Xbox Games with Gold.
And you know what? There was just something really nice about that time of the month when you knew you were getting a new batch of Xbox Games with Gold reveals. It's like the Game Pass announcements we highlight these days - they're a bit of an event that you can look forward to, even if the result isn't always what you'd ideally hoped for.
12 Months Later, Do YOU Miss Xbox Games With Gold? (459 votes)
- I miss it a lot!
- A little bit, yeah
- I'd forgotten about it to be honest!
- Not really, I prefer Xbox Game Pass Core
- No, I don't miss it!

With Xbox Game Pass Core, we're just not seeing that yet. In the 12 months since Xbox Games with Gold finished up, there have only been eight games added to the service (in December, April and August respectively). That's not necessarily a bad thing as they have to draw the line somewhere, but it's also just pretty unexciting.
So yeah, this isn't me saying - "Microsoft, you were wrong". I'm not sure it was the wrong decision to kill off Xbox Games with Gold. But as we look back 12 months later, I can't help but miss it. I'm just glad the games are still playable!

I always knew this would be the case. It was the same thing with Club Nintendo. People loved to complain about it, but once it was gone...
We're definitely paying more for less. It's really sad. A lot of people complained the games were crap but now we've got nothing in its place, and I did enjoy quite a few of them even in its last days.
Yeah, I miss it too.
And also obligatory comment complaining about having to pay more than PC users.
Towards the end the games they were offering were disgraceful but I got a load of 360 games to keep from it and some decent xbone titles would of got more if I didn't constantly do the new profile gamepass free trial thing to get it on cheap but Dark Souls has to probably be the top game I got from games with gold considering it got me into that genre and similar fromsoftware games that came out after!
I'm glad I have Forza Horizon 2 via GwG from years back, but tbh that's about it...
The consensus around Games With Gold in the comments section on this very website was always that it was bad.
Honestly I don't miss it at all. The last few years were just awful not like it was during the 360 era or even Xbox One.
I got exactly two games from it that i actually played (Sacred 2 & Chaosbane.) Both were on my wishlist so i would have purchased them eventually in a sale. Now that I think about it I ended up buying the series x upgrade for chaosbane .
In any case all the rest i already owned or were just a load of garbage I had no interest in. So to answer your question no I don't miss Garbage .... um .... Games with Gold even slightly.
My first week back to Xbox with the 1X after the end of 360 I got AC: Syndicate. Such a far cry from the scheduled trash dumps of the last year.
Is it embarrassing to admit this completely flew under my radar?
I miss it. It was a good way to discover games. I always hated how much ridicule the actual games got. I would much rather find a new game I have never heard of or never would have considered buying. In most cases, getting an old game with name recognition free doesn't interest me as much. I have probably already played it or could buy it at a heavy discount.
Amazon prime, epic, and GOG are carrying that torch for me now. Amazon in particular gives away some unheard of games that can be gems (as well as some clunkers).
They only redeeming value for me was games with gold for 2yrs then doing the $1 ultimate trial to get 2yrs of game pass ultimate. After that it was just monthly complaining about how bad the games were.
To be honest, I don't miss it - the anticipation that this month will be 'worth' adding to a growing backlog of games I still haven't had the time to play.
Then you get the utter disappointment of games II and it seems many others wouldn't play and many of them would voice their negativity on the internet too.
So no I don't miss it in the way it was going for the previous years - since they dropped the 360 games really.
At least for those who only Subscribe for Online Access, they do have access to those games in the core - an 'intro' to the more expansive 'Console' tier collection of Games it offers and 'Ultimate' adds even more on top for obviously more money - so to me it, it makes much more logical sense.
All the XB1 games required you to remain subscribed to Game Pass Core at least to keep playing, keep 'access' to. If you cancel your Subscription, you'd lose access and have to 'buy' to keep playing.
As a Game Pass Ultimate Subscriber, the Games with Gold added 'nothing' of value to me after they stopped giving away 360 games. Whether its the 'latest' games in Game Pass or the XB1 games from GwG, they all require a 'Subscription' to keep playing, and the delivery method is exactly the same too...
I do think the game selection got a little poor at the end but even with game pass ultimate I feel like I am getting less for my money.
It would be one thing if GWG was gone but they put the money into GP in some way, but they didn't. Core's line up is a bunch of games you could buy on sale for almost the same price as a year of the service, we didn't see an increase of quantity or quality of GP games, and the Perks w/ Ultimate are the same if arguably worse than they were when GWG was around, the Persona 3 Reload Pass being the single exception.
Xbox keeps on taking away value and charging more for less. Epic and Steam still give away games. Maybe it's time I bite the bullet on a PC but my Xbox library is so freaking big 😭
I forgot about it, and I only don’t miss it because Microsoft gave up on making the games worthwhile a long time ago. Not that there weren’t any good games in recent years, but the days of getting consistent hits like Forza Horizon, Sunset Overdrive, and others was long gone.
The games given out were largely of poor quality, but I infinitely prefer the business model behind GwG. There is no world where I would rather rent than own. So in that sense it is indeed a step backward for gamers, but a step in the direction of more money for Micro$oft.
Sign up for PS Plus Essential. The quality of free monthly games on there is rapidly approaching XBox Live Gold levels of *****.
All people did was complain about the games.
I miss Microsoft Points lol.
Even as a newer Xbox user, the concept of getting a 5+ year old game widely available on most platforms was rarely worth downloading it.
While going through Eurogamer's recent top 100 current games (games you can play on current systems) I found out I already owned a few like Might & Magic Clash of Heroes through GwG.
Moreover there are many great X360 games I OWN due to GwG that I might want to replay. GwG was good for a while, but the trouble is it was AWFUL by the end, literally scraping the barrel at the end, and that leaves a bad impression.
How often do Amazon give away games, @BacklogBrad? And can you add them to your Xbox library, or are they only playable via Amazon?
I don't miss it. In recent years, the games offered were below Epic store weekly freebie standards. My main goal in checking GwG was in the hopes of the digital counterpart of a physical game I already owned being offered, so I don't have to track down the damn disc.
@Fiendish-Beaver
Amazon have at least one new free game a week. Most play through 'Amazon Luma', but some of the larger titles have their own launcher or will use the publishers launcher.
If you are a prime member anyway, with a PC, its a good service. Check out more here : https://gaming.amazon.com/home
@Fiendish-Beaver every Thursday they give away like 3-5, and they are available for a month. They are pc only, sometimes they are codes for Epic game store or GOG but mostly playable in the Amazon launcher. I believe there was one instance where it gave me an xbox/microsoft store code but I don't remember which game it was.
They currently have some bigger old titles free. Borderlands 2 and prequel, lego lord of the rings, lego indiana jones, middle earth shadow of mordor, shadow of the tomb Raider, baulders gate 2, cat quest 2, and probably 10 more lesser known games.
Between amazon and epics 1-2 freebies every Thursday, you can really build up a library fast.
Almost all x360 games offer with Games with gold were not bad. Originally the X1 titles were good but unfortunately the quality of titles on the X1 dropped off. Example the X1 version of AC4 black flag was offered after the launch of the X1, later after the launch of the series Xbox you got games like Aground and Awesonots.
Ive got a huge collection of 360 games thanks to GWG. PS is still giving monthly games to play if you maintain your PS+. It's a no brainer and MS should bring it back but I understand they don't want it to conflict with GP
Ideal, thank you, @BacklogBrad. As it happens, I do always get the Epic games. I have an alarm set for every Thursday so that I don't miss them. I'll take a look at Amazon too now, so thank you...
Thank you, @Titntin. Yes, I have Prime and a decent gaming PC. I just wasn't aware of the games being offered by Amazon. Live and learn, I guess...
