Today, Capcom has announced the impending closure of Re:Verse, its weird multiplayer spin-off that launched as an additional extra to 2021's Resident Evil Village. Following Resident Evil 3's bundled-in Resistance online mode, Capcom has now delivered two pretty pants RE multiplayer experiences in a row - and we sincerely hope they don't bother with 'Resident Evil 9'.
Over the last few years, Capcom has proven that it can deliver some pretty incredible single-player experiences with RE these days. Sure, a batch of these recent releases have been remakes with a certain framework to build from, but when you also throw in the well-received Resident Evil 7 and the aforementioned Village, it's a pretty darn good lineup.
And, while Resistance and Re:Verse haven't detracted from how good these single-player experiences have been, it does make you think about what could have been created instead - using their budgets and development timeframes. We might have had another incredible RE remake by now if these two didn't exist!
To be honest, Resi and multiplayer has never really worked in a big way, has it? Even going back to the Xbox 360 days, the series has pumped out some strange and often lacklustre online entries, and we really think it's time Capcom stopped bothering to be honest. In a world where online games need more and more content and developer attention, now's probably the time to stop trying to make Resident Evil multiplayer a thing.
After a spell of strong rumours, things have gone pretty quiet on Resident Evil 9 right now, but we know the team is working away on the next main RE game. We also know that Capcom has expressed its desire to do more remakes after the incredible sprucing up of Resident Evil 4. Whatever their future plans are with this long-running series, we hope they're finished with all of these online shenanigans. Resident Evil campaigns are all we need, Capcom!
Who here tried out Resistance or Re:Verse? Tell us why RE9 should stay well clear in the comments section down below.

I'm not a MP guy at all, but I do think there could be some room for a good MP RE experience.
I always felt that the opening of the Division with the deserted city showed real promise as a possible zombie game - as well as its bullet sponge enemies.
I'm not sure about the asymmetrical gameplay thing though frome REverse.
I want them to continue experimenting with other game modes in addition to the great single player experiences. They have had some pretty great additional content in past games like the raid mode in RE Revelations. This genre is perfect for horde mode type content. I think they could do some cool things with procedurally generated co-op survive modes. I hope they aren't discouraged by what hasn't worked and keep trying to innovate.
I completely agree. What they need to do, if they absolutely must add an online mode, is re-create Resident Evil Outbreak, and add to them over-time. One way to gauge interest is remaster the classic 2.
Yeah, I basically just want a solid campaign. I don’t need or want the multiplayer stuff. Save your money, Capcom. Invest that money in getting us Megaman Legends.
RE works so well because it’s a cinematic action game with tight gameplay. The only time multiplayer really hit for me with the series is RE5. If I didn’t play that one multiplayer and have someone to laugh through it with me, I’d have been far more disappointed in it than I was.
Give me couch-coop raid mode and we're golden.
It's weird, because Capcom has kind of straddled a weird line when it comes to multiplayer RE. It's either a great idea tied to unpopular hardware, like with the Outbreak games, generic-looking games with no clear hook, or bonus modes that are not quite fully featured to stand alone.
They're usually fun, is the thing. Raid mode is great, but it's great in the way that, like, The Club was great. It's arcade fun in a way that's hard to market to a general audience. I mean, The Club sold 4 copies. Not necessarily what you want to emulate. And when they try to shoot for mass adoption, you get Umbrella Corps, which looked like a cynical trend chase that got no love or push from the fanbase.
RE 5 and 6 sold really well, but the fandom rejected them. RE 7 and 8 were well received, but had gameplay that didn't really lend itself to co-op. The fandom wants classic-style, single-olayer games, the shareholders say multiplayer games sell the best. It's no wonder that they've been stuck doing half-measure attempts. I wouldn't know what to do with the series, either.
I love the RE series but haven’t touched their multiplayer modes. It doesn’t bother me they try their hand at multiplayer. I’m sure they sell extras in that and are looking for their own live service type of game they can keep updating. As long as they have great single player which they’ve been on a roll with, I’m happy with what they’ve given us.
Another RE fan here, but I don't like the campaigns of VII and VIII very much. They lack good characters and some story bits and cutscenes are shoehorned, with additional gore to make up for the poor stories and lack of intrigue and subtle horror. Even 4, 5 and 6, that are more action-oriented, are better than the last two entries, so my only wish if that next game is some kind of reboot, with a Code Veronica remake on top of that.
Resident evil is at its best when it straddles the line between horror and camp. Too silly (RE 6) or too horror focused (RE 7) and I loose interest. The remakes of 1,2,3 and 4 manage it superbly, leaning away from some of the earlier ‘cheese’ (with plenty of their own).
I like the idea of a limited co-op experience, like I’m assuming the inevitable remake of 5 will do. What might be interesting is a co-op mode where you play through different maps at the same time and are able to contact each other regularly, trade items or leave them behind for the other player.
@Gamecuber A Resident Evil 0 remake would be perfect for that.
@Banjo- I actually just thought of that after I’d posted. Seems a sensible choice, but would a remake of zero require a remake of the first game again?
@Gamecuber As long as they don't botch it up... The first RE (remake) is my favourite. They could start with Zero, it's the first chronologically.
Code Veronica-
Please and thank you!
I want a new operations release
I liked this kind of multiplayer as an added bonus to the single-player emphasis.
No one wants it and soon there will be no one left. But it was a nice experience to be able to play multiplayer as an extension of my favorite game. (I'd love to play multiplayer in Farcry and Assasin's Creed someday too)
@xboxjapanfan I agree, I don't consider them a flop, when they are an additional and free expansion that uses the resources made for the main game. Actually, they are great for focusing on the shooter part, and it's nothing new. The first time was The Mercenaries in the original Resident Evil 4, although multiplayer was added later.
One I beat in the hardest mode was Resident Revelations Raid, with an online friend. It was madness, but it was satisfying. I also beat the co-op campaign of 5 in hard mode with a friend, but I only beat the final part when he left and was replaced by the AI. 🤣
The story for RE0 could easily be folded into a remake of RE. It's not the most complicated plot out there, and a lot of it could be condensed. Hell, you could eliminate Billy's character completely, seeing how he has never re-surfaced in any form since. Just have a 2 or 3 hour prologue with Rebecca and call it a day.
@XxEvilAshxX Actually, I like how Capcom expanded the story of Zero in The Umbrella Chronicles and would love a remake included everything. I also love how the game recovers and resolves the characters mentioned in 1, with Umbrella Chronicles adding more background and nuance. This would be one of my most anticipated remakes ever along 1, if they don't mess them up.
