So, the folks over at Digital Foundry have posted another interesting analysis today exploring some modded titles on PS5 - mods that manage to unlock frame rates in certain PS4 games. To be clear, these mods aren't official and can't be applied on normal PS5 consoles, however the results are interesting nonetheless - and they have us wishing for more 'FPS Boost' titles on Xbox.
Yes, we know, the FPS Boost program has now winded down and Microsoft seemingly isn't adding any more games to the lineup. However, these unofficial PS5 mods have games like Red Dead Redemption 2, Batman Arkham Knight and more running at 60FPS - and they look absolutely amazing doing so.
Of course, Red Dead 2 is the biggie here; it's such an amazing-looking game on Xbox and one that'd benefit so much from doubling its frame rate. Will it ever happen? Who knows, but the PS5 mod has no trouble running the PS4 Pro version at 60FPS, so we'd imagine Xbox Series X can manage similar results.

There's always the chance that Rockstar goes in and unlocks the frame rate itself - after all, the company did just randomly drop a brand-new version of the first Red Dead Redemption out of nowhere last year. Again though, that seems unlikely given the team will now be full steam ahead on GTA 6.
Moving back to FPS Boost for a minute though, something else DF looked at in today's analysis was a pair of Crash games in Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy and Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled. These are 30FPS titles on Xbox right now, but what if Microsoft went back to its Boost program to get certain Activision games running better on Xbox Series X|S? Microsoft has the power to do so now that it owns those ActiBlizz teams - if the games would work properly with the FPS Boost tech anyway!
FPS Boost has been an amazing Xbox Series X|S feature, some of us think it's one of the best bits of this generation so far, but we'd still love for more games to become compatible with the program. Microsoft, make it so!
Any of these games you'd like to see running at higher frame rates on Xbox? Drop your top suggestions for Microsoft down below.

Red dead Redemption 1 & 2 but rockstar will probably cash in on the game like what they did with the recent update to GTA V which will be unfortunate but it's a no brainer I suppose.
I would be pretty nice if Microsoft had a System Setting (with a huge disclaimer attached regarding potential game instability) where the DX layer simply attempts to run all BC games at 60fps. Of course it would default to Off.
Maybe add a new FPS Boost dropdown with 3 Options ("Always On", "Supported Games Only", "Off"). And the Default option is "Supported Games Only".
I hope that Fallout 4 is the next one.
@Romans12 Fallout 4 is getting a native Series X|S/PS5 upgrade.
@Gollum the first game runs at 60fps on ps5 now in the re-release they did for Switch and Playstation. So strange to release a new port for newer systems and not Xbox & no fps boost for the existing 360 version.
Now that Xbox has ABK they aren't going to even try anymore. The money from King alone is enough to make everyone complacent over at corporate. The proof is somewhat in the pudding too as Rockstar gave Red Dead Redemption a free 60fps patch for PS5. Let that sink in for a moment.....................Rockstar....Free. They're asleep over at Xbox headquarters guys.
@GamingFan4Lyf we'll more than likely get this feature as an AI tool with the next Xbox.
Heck, yes, I won't say no to more FPS Boost and Backwards Compatibility titles! Crash Team Racing is a no-brainer but there are so many candidates. Just introducing the option mentioned above would make me happy. FPS is a game changer 😊.
We all know why they won't release a 60 FPS patch ....because they will eventually re release red dead 2...and want all that extra cash
@StylesT It's maddening too, I've got it for PS and have been patiently waiting and waiting and waiting for that sweet 60 before diving back in to finish.......... and dang it still waiting
@Kezelpaso - I’d love more titles added too. I’ve recently played through Half Life 2 on my Series X (The Xbox 360 Orange Box version) and it can be modded fairly simply and perfectly to 60fps (at 4K). I might have missed it, but I don’t recall Pure Xbox covering the news of the mod - yes, it is only possible for a minority of people and isn’t official but it is a nice work around for Xbox users that are interested in making a classic game run brilliantly on Xbox Series consoles in the same way that FPS boost improves performance.
@Gollum Rockstar most certainly will try to sell a 60fps red dead 2 update because they are grifters.
Considering how R* basically abandoned RDR2 I doubt we'll get a 60fps update short of some rerelease next gen.
Red Dead 2 and Arkham Knight really need 60fps updates, the fact some third party "mod" can enable it goes to show just how little work is actually required to do so, I am sure it is literally as simple as a config.ini file somewhere changing a "fps cap" value from 30 to 60.
The real question isn't will it happen, the real question is why HASN'T it happened?
@JokerBoy422 The "60fps patch" on PS5 for RDR wasn't "free". It was damage control because everybody was talking about how greedy R* were for releasing it with a 30fps cap. For 50$ with no multiplayer it's still a robbery.
@vrubayka you don't know that. That's pure speculation. More then likely the 60 fps patch was always planned because it's already been said in the past that RDR would be a nightmare to figure out how to make 60fps work since the games code is practically held together by glue and duct tape. They wouldn't have been able to just release that particular patch for "damage control" that fast. It's most likely they had been working on it for quite some time and weren't able to release it at launch. Nice try though. However even if you're right and they were able to just double the frame rate in a couple days, what's Xbox's excuse for not getting that game running with fps boost if it's so easy or working out a deal with Rockstar to get the newer version with the 60fps update on Xbox?
But even besides all that. I gladly paid the $50 to play it at 60fps on PS5. Worth it when the Xbox version is still stuck at 30 and will likely never be patched to run any higher.
@JokerBoy422 I've seen Digital Foundry playing RDR on an emulator and they said that aside from a few glitches, the game functions just fine, nothing "nightmarish". Some work obviously needed to be done so FPS Boosting it wasn't possible, but it wasn't some insane work that is often being done in remasters of very old games.
@vrubayka ironic because I heard the code was a nightmare from Digital Foundry. However if what you say is true then that makes Microsoft look even worse for not getting it to run at 60fps on their system. Especially since it's apparently so easy to do lol! Oh well, I have my copy on PS5 running at 60 and it's a blast. Maybe one day if Microsoft can pull their head out of their ass and FPS Boost the game on Xbox then I'll go back to the Xbox version.
@JokerBoy422 The point is despite spaghetti code, the emulated game runs almost fine on PC at 60fps safe for some problems that need to be adressed in the source code. Xbox can't do that. It can't be done with FPS Boost because they can't change the source code regardless how minor that change is. They simply don't have access to it.
