It's that time of year again! We're looking to crown a Pure Xbox Game of the Year for 2023, and in order to do that, we're going to need you to vote for the best Xbox games of the past 12 months — only the top ten will make the final cut!
Last year's winner ended up being the outstanding Elden Ring, followed by A Plague Tale: Requiem. Before that, the 2021 winner was Halo Infinite and the 2020 winner was Ori and the Will of the Wisps!
We'll publish the full top ten here at Pure Xbox around Christmas time, but we'll need a few days to put the results together — so we're asking if you can submit your votes by Wednesday, December 20th. If the game you want to vote for isn't in the poll below, write it in the comments instead and tell us how many points you would have given it.
It'll be fascinating to see what wins this year, whether it's the massive Bethesda first-party release Starfield, the shadow-dropped masterpiece that was Hi-Fi RUSH, or maybe the recent Xbox arrival of Baldur's Gate 3. The list is absolutely ridiculous in 2023, and there are so many games that could grab the number one spot.
Bring on the votes, and may the best game win! If you haven't played enough games to vote for all five this year, that's not a problem - you just need to choose one game at a minimum in the poll down below.

Hi folks! Just to reiterate, if there's a game you want to vote for that's not included in the poll (we can only put so many in there), please mention it in the comments and tell us how many points you would have given it! We WILL still count those votes.
Hogwarts Legacy for me. Didn't enjoy anything as much as that.
I shall vote in this poll once I play through Avatar, or at least as much as I can by Tuesday night lol.
Lots of good games on the list has been a good year my favourite gaming moment of the year by far was in high on knife dlc seeing Frasier in cheeks bar just can't be topped great game!
Starfield is awesome.
Alan Wake 2 hands down. Not only my favorite game this year, but probably in my top 10 of all time
@FraserG These weren't on the list and I left blank.
Technically Chained Echoes came out late last December but it skipped everyone's GOTY lists including your own.
I haven't played enough 2023 releases to have a full view yet (no BG3, AW2, RE4 etc) but for now my list is:
#1 Hi-Fi Rush
#2 Chained Echoes
#3 Cocoon
#4 Starfield
#5 Jusant
Starfield was my most played game and definitely my game of year for xbox. Hi-Fi Rush was a pleasant surprise and is number 2, Sea of Stars number 3, Resident Evil 4 and surprising Wild Card Football would be number 5. I'm absolutely addicted to that game.
2024 is gonna be even better for xbox and i can't wait. Hellblade 2, Avowed, ooooo weeee!
@FraserG 2 points for blasphemous 2 for me bud, thanks!
Alan Wake 2 was great, but no game had me playing more than RE4, the game and the Separate Ways DLC were both stellar.
Happy with my 5 choices, but Lamplighters league might have bumped something if I saw it on the list; I give it an honorable mention. Had a lot of fun gaming this year
Project Zero/Fatal Frame and I really hope that the other three games are remastered... That said, it's been a very good year for games!
Hi there fellow gamers.
This is my Xbox Game of The Year List of 2023:
And then there´s other games that I played on my PS5, Nintendo Switch and PC.
As well as many others that will go to the backlog and will play them eventually.
What an absolute amazing year for gaming all around.
Cheers, stay safe everyone and happy gaming to us all
Is it bad that I put a 26 year old game as my top choice?
Don’t we get to vote for Jusant? Not my number 1, but up there! Four points from me.
My picks:
The Finals 3 Points
1 resident evil 4 remake
2 Alan wake 2
3 forza motorsport
4 hogwarts legacy
5 dead space remake
My honourable mentions go to starfield and ghost wire tokyo and sea of stars
Almost voted Goldeneye #2, was stoked when it made its way to Rare classics.
Starfield, it's glaring issues and all was still my best time gaming this year.
My picks:
1. Baldur's Gate 3 - 5 pts
2. Lies of P - 4 pts
3. Dead Space Remake - 3 pts
4. Hi-Fi Rush - 2 pts
5. Starfield - 1 point
Honourable mentions: Resident Evil 4, Dredge, Cocoon, Stray, Planet of Lana.
I haven't play Alan Wake 2 yet, but I suspect it could break into my top 5.
5 - Ghostwire: Tokyo
4 - Like A Dragon: Gaiden
3 - Cocoon
2 - HiFi Rush
1 - Starfield
#1 - Chants of Sennar (5 points)
#2 - Bombrush Cyberfunk
#3 - Hi-Fi Rush
#4 - Hogwarts Legacy
#5 - Sonic Superstars
I haven't played Baldur's Gate or Jusant yet, but those both look right up my alley.
1. Hi-Fi Rush
2. Starfield
3. Baldur’s Gate
4. Like A Dragon Gaiden
5. Wo Long Fallen Dynasty
Baldur’s Gate is awesome but the issues are holding me back from playing it more currently. I loaded a save and it was just a ghost cam flying through the floor. And im stressed about losing my save. Plus only 6-7 hours in so couldn’t give it 1st or 2nd yet. I’d say my 3 and 4 are interchangeable. And between Hi-Fi Rush and Starfield I gave HFR the nod because it was the bigger surprise.
@FraserG hi Fraser, I would give 'The Gunk' 2 pts. Great little indie game on GP.
Jusant - 4 points
I guess it doesn’t help when most of my gaming is over on the Switch…
Eh, I’ve still got some stuff to vote for.
In terms of stuff not on the list, I’m giving Guilty Gear Strive 4 points. It got me into fighting games and has continued to be my main fighting game even after trying others like Tekken 7, and it’s also quite possibly the most ridiculous game I’ve played all year and I love it. At least go listen to the music if you haven’t, people call it an album that comes with a free game for a reason.
In terms of what’s on the list, Persona 4 is my GOTY and it isn’t even close. No game has had an impact on me like Persona 4 did, and to give it anything less than 5 points here would be doing it an injustice.
Persona 3 fittingly gets 3 points, it’s a really great game like 4 but Portable specifically is a bit outdated gameplay-wise, and personally the story and characters don’t hit the heights that 4 does. Still a great game, but I’d recommend playing Persona 3 Reload in February and maybe 4 Golden now instead of 3 Portable at this point.
@themightyant I also really enjoyed chained echoes( played on switch though).
If you liked chained echoes give sea of stars a look.
5-Hogwarts Legacy
4-A Plague Tale: Requiem
3-Starfield
2-Diablo4
1-Dead Space
@FraserG My opinion might be controversial but I have had much fun playing the finals that I would consider adding it to the list although it is a brand new title I think that it might make for some cool “creative (diy map designer) game modes” with its cool destructive engine. Embark definitely deserves some credit and I think it would make for a fresh addition to the options.
(Please excuse my poor writing I’m typing from my phone and English isn’t my native language)
Everspace 2 for me was a pretty good game.
1 Lies of P
2 Wo Long
Sea of Stars got my top vote, but there are so many good choices!
5 points: Alan Wake 2
4 points: Baldur’s Gate 3
3 points: Other: Final Fantasy XVI
2 points: Hi-Fi Rush
1 point: Hog Leg
My 2 points would be Moving Out 2, builds on the original and great fun
Look I know Halo Infinite didn’t come out this year but the return to form for the series has been incredible. It’s my game of the year.
Phantom Liberty hands down. Starfield disappointed me so much but refunding it and getting Phantom Liberty instead was the best decision I made all year.
Man I went to vote but I have armored core sitting upstairs, boulders gate sitting on ps5 plus others I haven’t even gotten to yet. From what I finished this year I prob did like starfield the most, flaws and all
Best Xbox game of the year is obviously Dead Island 2, game came out of nowhere and was an amazing experience both solo and co-op.
Best game of the year in general is tougher though since I haven't really beaten that many of 2023's releases.
Kinda have been too focused on clearing up my backlog.
1. Hi-fi rush
2. Dead space re-make
3. Can't pick as there are some many other contenders
4. Bring on more in 2024
5. Gotta love GP
Hi-Fi Rush is my top game of the year xD
Cyberpunk phantom liberty by a mile. Nothing else on xbox achieved anything close to goty status imo. All the heavy hitter exclusives are deeply flawed. This list brings it home pretty hard how badly MS fumbled 2023. To compensate I've been finishing off the year by mopping up a bunch of switch titles I missed. Onward and upward I guess!
Not enough love on the poll for Lies of P. Such a great game. Not to say Elden Ring is a bad game (which it isn't), but the combat feels so clunky now that I've played Lies of P.
@NintendoByNature definitely looking forward to Sea of Stars. I fast tracked Chained Echoes as it was leaving Game Pass and It seemed fairer to play it first
Homebody: 5
Little Goodie Two Shoes: 4
Killer Frequency: 3
Lamplighters League: 2
Spookies Jumpscare Mansion: 1
... yeah I like horror games lol these are my 5 personally
We've been really lucky this year with games, and it's cool to see so many different choices in everyone's top five.
For me -
CP2077 Phantom Liberty: Delivered on the game's initial promise in phenomenal fashion.
Alan Wake 2: Remedy's masterpiece. Atmospheric, inventive and really fun to play (though those jumpscares were created by Satan himself).
HiFi Rush: Unexpected GOTY contender from Tango Gameworks. Left me with a big grin on my face.
Like A Dragon Gaiden: the Man Who Erased His Own Name: Every time I think I'm burnt out on the Like A Dragon series, they pull me back in. Stoked for Infinite Wealth now.
Warhammer 40k Darktide: Incredible world, stupidly fun and a great co-op experience.
I have a few weeks off now so excited to play Lies of P, Jusant, Cocoon and Sea of Stars (time-permitting!). Hope you all find the time to tick a few off your backlog, too.
Rather surprisingly neither of the Yakuza/Like A Dragon games made my top 5 this year.
Neither Ishin or Gaiden was bad, just Gaiden felt like DLC and beside from the ending didn't do much for the overall or Kiryu's story.
My first and second picks were based on my year in review results.
Bladur's gate 3, Starfield, Alan wake 2, Dead Space remake, Sea of stars in that order.
Hi-Fi Rush is my GOTY
1. "Baldur's Gate 3" - 5 pts
2. "Lies of P" - 4 pts
3. "Remnant II" - 3 pts
4. "Wo Long" - 2 pts
5. "Hi-Fi Rush" - 1 point
Dear @Elsa_Gethwine
Great (top two) pick...
EAFC 0%!? It's not THAT good 😂
All I can say is, that anyone that did not give Baldur's Gate 3 5 points, simply has not played the game... 😜
Ses of Thieves: Monkey Island - 4 points
Alan Wake 2
Resident Evil 4 Remake
Dead Space Remake
Hogwarts Legacy
Remnant 2
Honorable Mentions:
Jedi Survivor
Cocoon
Slayers X
AoE2 DE for me. Mostly from my lifelong obsession of breaking down the PC barrier. The phenomenal job done with the radial controls is so perfect. I can only hope this is implemented with Starcraft and possibly WC3. Maybe provide a resurgence to the Moba genre.
Ghostrunner 2 with 0% yet, can only mean: because it's not in the Gamepass 🙄
1. Street Fighter 6
2. Sonic Superstars
3. Starfield
4. Forza Motorsport
5. Hi-Fi Rush
I never count remakes/remasters and kept the list strictly to games I played on Xbox, otherwise the list would be a little different.
It was really hard. Mine is
1. Sea Of Stars
2. Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty
3. Lies Of P
4. Robocop Rogue City
5. Planet Of Lana
5 points: Starfield
4 points: Atomic Heart
3 points: Alan Wake 2
2 points: AC Mirage
1 point: Hogwarts Legacy
@somnambulance It's easily one of the best stories in gaming.
@CHAOSbutler117 One of the best stories and surprisingly some of the best gameplay as well. There’s an aspect of Alan Wake 2 that just feels like gaming “home” to me, if that makes sense. Everything about it felt right, but also incredibly surprising as well. It’s an incredible achievement.
@somnambulance It is incredible!
