The big Xbox Game Pass release (in fact, the only Xbox Game Pass release) of the past few days ended up being Mafia: Definitive Edition, which is a stunning remake from 2020 of the original title in the series that debuted in 2002.
Back at the time of launch, the critics had some very nice things to say about this one, with the game racking up a 79 on Metacritic for the Xbox One version. We've definitely enjoyed our time with it too here at Pure Xbox!
"At this point in the series' life this is the best-looking Mafia game, just about pipping 2016's Mafia 3. It's amazing to see this era in such minute detail — especially the vehicles and weapons — and four years since its Xbox One launch, it's hardly aged at all."
That's not to say there aren't any downsides - the big one for us is that it's stuck at 30FPS on Xbox consoles, regardless of what you're playing it on. Some might say the gameplay and the story don't hold up despite being remade, either.
So, what are your thoughts on Mafia: Definitive Edition so far? Have you already finished it on Xbox Game Pass, or are you just getting stuck in? Perhaps it's one for the backlog as you're not that interested? Let us know down below.
What Do You Think Of Mafia: Definitive Edition? (2,835 votes)
- It's fantastic, I'm loving it!
- It's pretty good so far, yeah
- It's alright, not bad
- It's not as good as I'd hoped to be honest
- It's terrible!
- I haven't played it yet, but I will!
- I haven't played it, and I probably won't...

Played on PC, loved it after I'd sorted out the inconsistent frame rate (disable windows full screen optimization in properties).
I completed Mafia on PC back when it originally launched. The race mission was tough for a lot of people. Windows-compatible controllers were a toss up back then. I've fired up the remaster on Game Pass and it's fun to play through again.
I get nauseous from the low frames
The story is awesome.
Nothing at all can compete with gamepass especially gamepass ult. So tired of hearing these one brand PS5 boys talk like PS5 offers us anything at all of value for our money. I have a PS5 and a sx ..and a SS and a switch.
The SX absolutely is the better console with the better games over the PS5 this generation. I don't see a world where sony is gonna be catching up . Not unless Xbox decides to tank itself but it won't happen. Nobody spends upwards of 100 billion dollars just to hand the W to Sony. Xbox is the smart gaming company. They will let ps5 only players pay FULL price plus tax for games(only a few) that weve had access to already forever. Also, the games so far have not been big budget. And if they do put a big budget game on PS5...good...sony only players need games BADLY. Whatever u Read on the net about Sony doing good is absolutely untrue. Sony is down very bad. They're in the very last place in profits which means even lower output of first party titles. Somehow...sony only players think having timed exclusives is a W for them (it's not..you're always paying full price for a game u dont even know you'll like). Meanwhile xbox players are literally more active in numbers and actually buy the games that are good off gamepass.
People are truly starting to see how bad Sony is lying...even their console numbers aren't as good as they said. but guess what? Xbox console numbers are factually BETTER than what the moronic one brand Sony content fans are saying . The Xbox series is either close to or surpassing the console numbers of the 360. Yes, Xbox will dominate PlayStation. Mark my words , this here is a receipt.
@theduckofdeath that race mission was pissing me off...lol. I had to do it on easy because I couldn't beat it. But finally did after a handfull or 2 times of losing
Loved it. It was nice having pacing in a crime story (compared to GTA, SR, LaD, etc) because it's not worried about open world shenanigans
Did feel like the story skips over stuff. It's weird for a story that is essentially a man trying to save his family, and we never see his kid.
@Krazee5255
I take you thread and do agree with some points but it depends what type of gamer you are.
I have like yourself all 3 consoles.
Why do we have all 3 because of exclusives.
Switch draws me in with TOTK and Mario Odyssey to name two. A bit quiet this year but we know Switch 2 is coming. I think 🤣
PS5 the first two years only with HFW, GOWR, Ratchet and Clank. It has been quiet recently
But Astro Bot is looking very good for a platformer.
Then there is my series x with GPU until March 2025. It’s a strange one I’m a big new games top quality AAA game player, always have been.
Yes Forza Horizon 5 top AAA quality.
Starfield was ok, but very clunky and old fashioned system wise. Maybe this year Indy Jones let’s see. So my series x and GPU seems to bring me old AAA top quality games say gears 5 etc but nothing new in that vane and is my hang up with Xbox. GPU is full of old big AAA games and minor AA etc which I’ve played the ones I wanted to already.
At the recent showcase DOOM was looking the most polished and biggest quality AAA, guess what it’s multi console.
Then there is the trust issue going into next generation. Microsoft have show no signs outside of the USA of any advertising or pushing or PR for Xbox in general but especially consoles. That’s not a good sign for this generation or next generation console wise from Xbox. I’ve been with Xbox since day one original Xbox but this is the most disillusioned I have ever been with them from Xbox studio big quality AAA releases and to trust in future Xbox generation.
You also need to remember I’m in Europe the UK and there is just no Xbox brand momentum or publicity, it’s like a third place reject over here.
So when Microsoft don’t try in Europe or UK to advertise or PR, you must understand it’s like the Xbox console brand over here has been dumped, which is a tragic shame and we have no trust of the brand over here.
It’s probably different in the USA Xbox home country where gamers have Xbox consoles as much as maybe Switch and PS5 and they talk about the brand etc in a positive manner.
But when a company Microsoft has driven a brand Xbox in Europe and UK etc downwards, its hard for us to try and be positive about Xbox.
You have your own trillion dollar USA Microsoft to blame for that, not us hurt Europe UK original day one Xbox fans.
@Krazee5255
By the way don’t get wrong the others have their issues for sure and haven’t got trillions of dollars behind them.
And consoles in general across the board are down in Europe as of the month of July 2024 a massive 46% down and all three have their part to blame in that.
Would never have played it if not for Gamepass.
Very good on PC.
Runs great, plays great, awesome story.
10/10
Got it on PC back in the day (grrr that race piece) and played it again on OG Xbox. Got Mafia 2 on 360 and bought the Definitive Collection (1/2/3) on PS4/PS5 (didn't buy 3).
Now playing through it for the X time and still having fun. The story and set pieces are great in this Remake. Had no problems so far with the XSX version, so I'm truly enjoying myself and forgetting about time. There's some muscle memory so I can enjoy the little details more than before. Weird how your brain HDD sometimes works with information you don't really need
There are some dips but overall it has been good so far!
@OldGamer999 @OldGamer999 I hope people read your comment and see this is exactly how someone should reply when they don't exactly share the same beliefs.
Heres the thing though, I cannot say you're wrong at all. Ive heard of Xbox being not existent in Europe. They're crazy if they don't focus over there...so many gamers willing to play whatever good games come out. Also, (Im just hoping that Xbox has realized their shortcomings wth how they handled hardware) Xbox does have some (alot) of new leadership ..and these people are talking very highly of Xboxs next gen consoles development. So,I don't think its great that Xbox gave players more choice with the Series S...but i cannot deny anymore that the system is being blamed for a couple major releases delays(not including first party delays might actually be due to ss). It is so odd though that some devs can make the most badass games run on the SS but others can't...i guess that's not the point though.
Maybe I was a bit harsh in my first comment...but I just feel like Sony...who is normally king at putting out story driven games with good gameplay especially last gen are so low in output this gen. It's not like Sony to be so quiet this gen (for alot of it so far).
Id never in a million years would want Sony out ...us as gamers have 3 console choices...that's it...so I do hope for all 3 to thrive so we get asany players choices as possible.
Also, astrobot looks AWESOME. I'm the type of gamer who will absolutely switch up who's my favorite depending on who I feel Iike more in the current generation. IDC if it's halfway through..a quarter way through...to me that doesnt matter. Ill switch up from liking Xbox to liking PS5 in a quick minute if I'm getting good games for my money.
I am a fan of both the ps5 and Xbox, btw. Huge fan of both...but I have no prob criticizing either one of them. U should have heard me last gen about Xbox and Ive definitely criticized Xbox this gen ALOT as well ..like them being morons for selling hifi rush...it wasn't my fav game but so many people liked it...how stupid of a decision was that.
Anyways, there's really no debate right now because I can agree with your reply
@Krazee5255 somebody started on the beer early. Or bit late for April fools.
@OldGamer999 I really hope Xbox can treat their European players A LOT better. That really sucks because I know how important players choice is. You guys definitely deserve Xbox at it's best. They need to work that out.
I wonder if its because the CMA over there in Europe? The FTC is attacking xbox in America but I wonder if the CMA is why Xbox is so low in Europe. If not Xbox has no excuse...they need advertise to our fellow European gamers and hook em the fck up! I'm European btw...by blood...lol...family moved to America 2 generations back
Fun game. It still felt a touch outdated but a great time none the less. This is based on my memory from playing it a few years ago. I probably won't get around to replaying it on gamepass.
We are due for a 4th, I am ready.
Sometimes it’s hard to get excited about older games coming to game pass that are probably in the sales for $3. On the other hand, I’m not super interested in this one; if I were, I’d probably be excited. I def get more than my moneys worth on GP either way! I’ll never catch up.
@Krazee5255
In the UK and in the xbox360 era they were joint top with Sony giving them a run for their money and all those amazing AAA from Xbox and paid third party’s was one hell of an Xbox ride which was fantastic for me.
Sony is just a little weird right now. I mean look at Naughty Dog 4 years in and not a sniff due to bad decisions a few years ago.
PS5 sales down 5 million against PS4 in Europe same time line, that’s got to hurt a bit.
Nintendo also having a silly moment waiting for Switch 2.
I also think in the UK anyway our amazing fantastic hobby is slowly declining, console sales show this and we have thousands of all three on our shop shelves.
I employ lots of apprentices and graduates, ages 16 to 23. A few years ago and further back I would hear them talking about gaming consoles and games.
No No No, not now my fellow gamer, it’s sport, Netflix shows, other interests and dare I say even work. All that and no gaming chat.
It’s this new generation released 3 and half years ago, people the young ones, are just not as interested. And that definitely is not good for the future, because if they are not interested as much and normally their children won’t as much.
My gaming days was handed down to my children who are now adult gamers, if that line breaks then gaming will be less.
Always preferred the Mafia over GTA. Played the first one on PC back in the day and then 2 on the 360 and 3 a few years ago. Bought the Remaster a few years ago on PS4 and played through it. I plan to replay it through on Gamepass at some point.
I never liked the original one on PS2. Was clunky as hell and adhering to traffic laws was pretty annoying, I don't know how different, this remake is.
2 was better but pretty boring.
3 was kinda good, but so far I couldn't bring myself to finish them.
Might give them a chance (again) someday, but not in any hurry.
@Krazee5255 screw it, it's Saturday. I'll take some of what your smoking buddy 👍
@Deljo
Hang on I participated, I get some as well 🤫
I love this game had an amazing time with it when I bought it a while back story and graphics are amazing the gameplay is actually good after you get the hang of it because it's a bit old school the only thing is the achievements are a bit buggy but apart from that one of the stand out games of last gen would love if they rebooted this franchise and start from this era again or even earlier!
Play the original and the story and characters were pretty good but the gameplay was absolute garbage. Why is no one talking about if there’s been any gameplay improvements?
@tslog I guess because it’s not a new release, most people talked about it years ago?
I never played the original only this version when it was on PsPlus ages ago.
I just bought the trilogy in the sale right before this got announced for Gamepass, but I haven't played it yet. Since I don't have to worry about getting to it before it leaves, I keep pushing it down the backlog... 🤣
Im gonna get stick for this but..
Mafia was on PS+ last year, maybe even before then. But please bash Sony because it's now on GPU. 😂 I love GPU but please this generation has been awful for both series X and PS5 in regards to exclusives.
Though PlayStation exclusives are better than Xbox exclusives. For me anyway, I love single player story games. GoW, GoT, HFW, Ratchet and Clank.
Ghost of Tsushima was a PS4 release but dam it's amazing looking with the PS5 upgrade. It's also my favourite game of all time. The story and gameplay are just amazing and I've been informed I'm old now.
PS5 down on sales compared to PS4, can't remember the PS4 having a pandemic and economic issues affecting sales when it was released. People are a lot more careful with their money now. And rightly so, a lot of PS4 players have yet to upgrade. Same with xbox one!
Xbox sales are tanking! It's awful to see, because I used to skip Tec to play Halo on a jap import console at my local game.
Got a 360 on release and had to take it to my uni to display it at a show.
Xbox one I got after wrist surgery, because the controller was perfect to use while in a cast.
COD moving to GPU has made me go back to my series X. Forza Motorsport has improved ten fold since I played it on release. It, Halo, Gears and Forza horizon are my fave original Xbox exclusives. I've got GPU paid up until August 2026 thanks to MS reward points. Long may that continue as well as I've had GP and GPU since it was released and never paid full price for it.
The amount of exclusives coming out for xbox is unreal over the next couple of years. I would recommend people remember it hasn't always been like this.
@Nexozi I have to disagree about Sony single player stories. HFW is an Ubisoft clone with nice graphics, GOT, while a nice looking game, is another map marker click fest with janky fighting. Both are so overrated by the media just because it is Sony.in fact, I think all the Ubisoft games are much better and fun. Don’t get me wrong, Sony has a lot of great games. But Microsoft has a lot coming up that interests me much more than what Sony can offer. And they have much more variety than the typical single player open world with cinematic movie cut scenes.

@TheSimulator Not trying to sound as picking on you. Just asking. How were you able play games on original Xbox, 360, Xbox One, or another comparable console?
Again, not saying you. Just it seems be the very, super, trendy thing this gen to poop on frame rates, say causes headaches, etc.
Honestly not calling you out. Has been couple games in my years of playing that bothered me. One example that really bothered me was Rage on 360. Think it was the 60 frame rate (if it was?) when coupled with the screen bob while sprinting /running. Actually it's screen bob in general bothers me. Borderlands 1 remaster, same issue whole sprinting.
Tried play Rage numerous times. But that bob had me turn it off after 10 mins or so. Never got far, never finished it.
@Krazee5255, totally agree, mate. Xbox is better in all aspects.
Played and completed it on PS4 a few years ago. It's a fantastic game, a little masterpiece.
I liked what I played of it, but honestly, it's just got too much "race car" stuff in it for me. Stopped playing it when I got to the race you have to win. Not much on the high speed car chases and such in video games.
@Krazee5255 Yeah, that's pretty much where I left it. I really enjoyed what I played of it, but it seemed to be ecking towards a racing game, and I don't do racing games.
@GuyinPA75 idk what to tell you quantum break made me nauseas as well. Could be the screen shake / player movement
Loved every minute. Played it all the way though. Really did feel being part of a gangster movie.
Great attention to detail.
My quick review for those who want an update!

Fans of #gta5 will love this older title now available on #XboxGamePass
As Tommy Angelo, you will join the forces of Don Salieri and look to defeat the opposition.
Set around the last 1920’s and 1930’s USA, you run drinks rackets, cigars and other contraband , all whilst popping a few bullets between the eyes of other ‘hoodlums.’
Visually it’s still looking fine and in some ways the slight ageing fits the game anyway. Voice acting is good and you feel really part of the story.
You will have to make some tough choices between life and death and not always your own.
A decent 8 hours will see through the main campaign and I highly recommend this one for its story, plot line and it’s well worth your time!
Graphics - 7/10
Sound - 8/10
Gameplay - 8/10
OVERALL - 8/10

I thought it was excellent. Great world - like a movie set. Great story, though I thought the end seemed a bit rushed. Some clunky mechanics - the shooting is pretty old fashioned. I might get slaughtered for this, but it's one of those rare games that is a better experience on the easiest difficulty. Then you can just have fun with the world, the story, the characters, and the excellent writing and voice acting.
I finished it and went straight to the store to check out Mafia 2 and 3! (Though I reckon waiting a bit for a Gamepass release would be a decent bet)
It was also the perfect length. And personally, I didn't once notice any issues with performance/frame rate.
Will undoubtedly be one of my favourite games of the year.
Game pass has really turned around this past year! Felt like all we were getting was filler games and maybe one actual title a month.
And everyone who quit at the race, that's 1 mission at the start of the game... You missed everything... It is NOT a racing game or even close to one
No option to say I have already played it years ago
30fps on series x, the same as crash bandicoot
Lame
It's a great game, but I played it on PC. There's just no way I'm going to tolerate 30 FPS these days.
@Krazee5255 Who hurt you?
Just finished it this weekend. A really enjoyable game that tells a good story, and keeps up the pace as it's not really an open world game so it's not packed with time consuming side missions, etc. Like I can hardly remember the plot of any GTA games since it's such a small part of the experience.
It also scratched the "genre" itch same as western games, or Sherlock Holmes detective games. It's nice to have something set in the 30s Gangster era that's a faded genre in modern pop culture.
Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to get my double breasted suit and fedora out of the wardrobe.
