As we saw in yesterday's Pure Xbox Game of the Year 2024 roundup, Xbox fans have been treated to a massive range of great games on Xbox over the past 12 months, but naturally we can't afford to buy every single one of them!
Of course, Xbox Game Pass is a huge factor here as well, as it's become very evident in recent years that many Xbox owners play most of their titles via the the subscription service, and ultimately limit their game purchases as a result.
When we conducted this same poll in 2023, the majority of Pure Xbox users told us that they only bought 3-5 games in the calendar year, and it was a similar situation back in 2022. Now, we're keen to see if that's changed in 2024!
So, we've put a couple of polls below - give us your vote, and feel free to elaborate in the comments. If you've only bought a few, we'd love to know what they were, and why you felt they were deserving of your hard-earned cash.
How many Xbox games have you actually bought in 2024? Tell us down in the poll and comments below.

Just 1, Horizon 4 only because of the delisting. Gamepass got us covered 👍🏾
Looking at my year in review I played 212 games and only 39 by Gamepass. I'm propping up the average purchase numbers for the likes of @redd214
Happy Christmas you filthy animals 💝🥳🎉
Just one. When I still had Game Pass, my niece was playing Paw Patrol: Mighty Pups Save Adventure Bay. I bought it when I got rid of GP because she was super into it.
Probably more than 100, and 100% digital. 🎉
100% digital all GPU on series x
Switch Luigi mansion 2 HD Digital
PS5 Astro Bot and new Dragon age Digital
Quiet year for me on Switch and PS5
Currently mainly playing Indy GPU.
So that’s 64% on full digital purchase I think.
It’s all going that way slowly.
Seems high and of course only includes purchased games outside of GPU.
Does that include purchased on GPU as you have purchased a subscription?
Probably around 25 on xbox and almost all are physical. Also probably 5 or so on both ps5 and switch.
Steam is my main platform so that is where most purchases are. Can't even begin to count those. Easily over 100 with seasonal sales, humble bundle, fanatical, etc.
Mr. Rogers once said “There is a direct correlation between a person’s competence and overall worth and the number of physical games they buy. The lesser the one, the lesser the other.”
It was a light year for me with 20 on Xbox, 2 on Switch, and 6 on PS5.
I only bought a few games this year on Xbox.
LaD, Dogma 2, Veilguard Shadows of Doubt, Alan Wake 2.
Bought much more across Quest, Switch, PC and retro (recent boguth and replayed King Kong, held up remarkably well). I would have got more on Xbox but MS has been rather clear about not wanting my business on console, so spent that money elsewhere.
I did get one XB game in physical this year an Xmas gift.
Not a lot for me, but all digital. Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth and FFI-VI.
Fc 25, Undisputed, hogwarts legacy, harrypotter quidditch, suicide squad, gotham knights. All digital on the series S. Although I bought the last 4 this month on sale!
If buying The Crew 2 for $1 counts. One.
All digital again this year for me bought about 5 games I think this year don't need to buy many with the value of gamepass this year!
VERY few, maybe 2-3, but that's mostly because I have Game Pass, played 30+ on that. I also play across all platforms, most of my digital library is on PlayStation or Steam (Deck).
Additionally after buying a PS5 Pro that will likely be my preferred platform now for the rest of the gen.
As for physical I still buy plenty and strongly value CHOICE, but at the same time I haven't bought any on Xbox this year, they have all been Switch or PS5.
Not a huge deal but the poll says 2023 not 2024.
Maybe two or three steep discounts for under € 10, but other than that I only buy games for my PS5. My Series X is solely for Game Pass. Never even used the disc drive.
I would say around...maybe 50?
Around 90% of them were physical, of course.
I purchased 17 games on the Xbox ecosystem in 2024, most of which were OG/360 games, and 4 newer games. The most amount of games I've purchased in years.
it’s fine to do a mix of physical and digital.
just saying that not everyone is going to pay full price for a game, especially if the game is ultimately isn’t worth the money
The last games that I bought at full price were the FF13 trilogy and FF15. I don't mind to have the option to play physical games but I find they are increasingly not available for the Xbox or only at full launch price. After getting a series S I only get digital games and don't have any need to get physical games again since they simply are not ready available.
I've bought a lot of digital games this year. I'm talking absurd numbers. It's also at a point where I live in such a small place that I could not hold/keep more physical games with me like I could in the 360/PS3 days.
I’m a gamepass user so I only bought 4 xbox games this year. Half and half on digital vs physical as I buy based on price but prefer digital. Bought about 30-40 switch games though and 2 PS5 games. Nothing for PC because gamepass.
Only bought Dragons Dogma 2 on Xbox series X. Probably about 30 PS5 games and countless Steam games (can’t resist those deep discount sales). Nothing on the Switch for the first year since I bought it though
Well, I’ve only had an Xbox since April of this year, but let’s see here!
37 physical games
35 digital games, including some free-to-buy like the first two Crackdowns, and the recent EA freebies.
Not bad for eight months of ownership!
…don’t ask me how many PS or Switch games I’ve purchased this year, though…
My series X is a GPU console only.
@themcnoisy Not doing much for the average it seems champ lol
Hope your Christmas was great!
30 - 40 all digital. Mainly back compat to be fair. Or a deluxe edition on sale. Sub to GPU but use my points to buy or subsidise my games.Trying to slowly build a one stop shop digital library. Replacing even physical games with digital ones and games I own on other consoles, just so I eventually will have every game I have or want to have, ready to play at any time. I know, I have issues.
Around 5-6 I think. I sub to GP ultimate so play most on there. If it's a great game I'll buy it just to give the devs some help.
Can only remember 2 titles of the 6 or so I bought. Got Robocop just after Xmas last year. Also picked up the Castlevania collections when they were on sale.
Will be buying a few more over next few days - maybe Hogwarts Legacy as it's only £18 atm on sale.
Enjoying taking my time with Indy atm, easily my GOTY.
Overall I bought 5-6 games I think. All of them on PS5 (xCloud on GPU is my Xbox console). I decided to start playing the games I own. Also, I’ve been all digital since 2017 more or less.
@Rodimusprime13 Was the trilogy for console? If so, where did you buy it? I would love to replay it on my Series X or PS5, since XII-2 was one of my favorite games, but I can only find the PC games.
Edit: I overlooked the fact that you can play 360 games on Series X. They’re very expensive for such old games though.
Didn't really keep track. There were so many sales of older games that I bought. I bought at least 20-25 games , of those only 3 were physical copies.
About to buy 4-5 more in the Countdown sale.
Bought 74 on GOG
19 on Switch, 80% physical.
7 on Steam
3 months of Xbox rental program
Just Horizon 4 due to delisting. I have it on Steam, but wanted to ensure I had a console version.
I buy my games on the other platform and probably bought about 50 titles this year, but only about 10 at full price.
I've been digital only now for many years, can't remember the last time I bought a plastic download ticket and Im happy with that choice.
I only recently resubbed to GPU, primarily for Indy, which I can't play due to motion sickness! Real shame as I was enjoying my time with it 😀
So far this year I bought:
The majority of games I bought on Xbox were games I've tried/played on GamePass and it's one of the reasons I love the service.
I got Dark Souls 3 on disc as my son wanted it for his birthday but other than that its mainly GPU games, and he plays some free to play games as well. Trying to keep our Xboxes and gamepass-machines only!
@BacklogBrad Your username is probably appropriate then 😄
Hello there fellow gamers.
I bought quite a lot of games for my Series X this year, but I would say that 60% of them were digital since there were some great deals this year.
I got 10 physical games and 12 digital games for Xbox alone.
Will probably get a few more digital games because of the Christmas deals on both Xbox and Playstation.
Wich means, the backlog keeps on growing....... But some of these deals are to good to miss out though, so yeah, there is that.
Cheers and happy gaming everyone
Somewhere between 40-50 because they've had some great sales this year and Gamepass is the gateway drug for 3rd party publishers - there's no way I'm ever letting go of Persona 3, as example.
0% physical though. I don't need more coasters.
I find I am buying less and less games and spending less and less in total. First, there is not a lot of innovation out there right now with tried and true formulae used in many games. Second, the price of new AAA games is ridiculous so I have to wait for sales. Third, I am tired of games shipping as buggy messes for the first year and waiting for them to go through enough fixes for the games to be decent enough to play. Finally, GamePass allows me to try before I decide to buy helping me make more informed decisions on what to buy.
With all the Xbox uncertainty I haven’t bought a single game in the entire year, only got Forza Horizon 4 for free as I owned DLC and Game Pass, and used Rewards points to pay for a month of Ubisoft+ and play SW Outlaws.
I realise now that I only actually bought ONE game this year.
I bought Dragon Age Veilguard, for the Xbox.
And I must buy Indy, some time next year. And I want to give Starfield another go, too.
However, I also got five games this year for the PS5.
They are Flintlock Siege of Dawn, Astrobot, Black Myth Wukong, Avatar, and Star Trek Resurgence.
6-10, but none of those were 2024 releases. This has been one of the worst years for games I've ever experienced. Honestly can't name one memorable new title I enjoyed.
Far too many for what I actually have time to play. Over 10 titles, but I also have Game Pass Ultimate, so factor in those games too and Its too much. I also picked up 26 full length PS5 games, and a dozen switch games. (and PC games for my deck as well) All Digital.
New Year Resolution for 2025 is to buy only games I have time for, so under 10 across all platforms.....
30+ on Xbox. Guilty of buying $5–10 games on sale in droves tho.
8 on PS5
4 on Switch
Newer games that I bought were Astro, Wukong, DA Veilguard, Spider man 2, death stranding (on xbox), diablo 4 dlc, worms armageddon remaster, age of mythology, lies of P, zelda TOTK and mario wonder.
Went full digital 6 years ago and never looked back. Only own like 2 physical games on switch.
@Runex2121 lol same issue. Kinda liked the idea of Gp as a way to cap my spend to subscription and only buy games that I am 100% planning to play now/nearest month.
Yet still guilty of buying those 80% off games during sales haha.
I actually actively use the xbox refunds system - saved ton of money. I think a good 1/4 of games I bought I was able to refund as soon as I realized its not for me.
I don't buy games, I rent them. I mainly use my XsX as a gamepass console.
I don’t know how to answer. In addition to game pass, I get about $20 per month in Microsoft rewards. And beyond that, my health insurance and credit card give me Best Buy credit. So… even the games I buy, I don’t buy.
In some ways, it’s a good time to be a poor gamer, even tho it’s not a good time to be poor in other areas of life!
