2023 has been a particularly fantastic year for great games on Xbox, from the first-party goodness of Starfield and Hi-Fi RUSH to the stunning third-party releases of Alan Wake 2, Resident Evil 4, Baldur's Gate 3 and so much more.
It's also been a fruitful 12 months for the Xbox sales, as we've been gifted with hundreds of discounts per-week on a regular basis, and sometimes even 1000+ deals in some of the big promotions such as the current Countdown Sale.
However, we know that a lot of Pure Xbox members like to enjoy the incredible offerings on Xbox Game Pass rather than buying additional titles, so we wouldn't be surprised if a few of you haven't bought anything in 2023!
Whatever the case may be, this is your chance to tell us how many games you've bought this year. We'll be keeping an eye on how the polls compare to last year, where the majority only picked up 1-5 games, and 66% of those purchases were entirely digital. Let's see what happens...
How many Xbox games have you actually bought in 2023? Tell us down in the poll and comments below.

Having game pass means a no go for buying games for me……however BG3 was the exception and worth every penny! After being so disappointed with Starfield, BG3 is unquestionably GOTY.
Not a one. Just used Game Pass all year. Might pick up Remnant when my Ultimate sub runs out.
11 games between Series X and PS5 for me and 0% physical. I haven’t bought a physical game since PS3/360. I have zero intention to return to physical media even tho i do like the steel box limited editions and i know they will be worth good money in the future.
Not many due to Gamepass. I don't have the time to play everything that comes out nor do I want to buy every new game for $70+. However, I did digitally buy Star Wars: Jedi Survivor and Hogwarts Legacy brand new and the Borderlands Collection: Pandora's Box for $30 digital as well. I haven't played all the latest games. But I have had a blast with with I have played this year, mostly through Gamepass.
Do collections count as single games?
I’ve purchased 30 Xbox games so far this year, all of them digital. It’s been many years since I bought a physical copy of a game.
i bought the old dead island and riptide games for a few bucks. non game pass games didn't interest me.
most likely will buy star wars outlaws and dead island 2 next year.
@rustyduck same for me. I don't generally buy much with Gamepass through April 2025. I am using my rewards points to get Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth for free next month though!
I haven't counted but I played over 200 different games (almost 300) and I know that less than half were from gamepass
Oof, must be in the hundreds... I'm a bit loco in that regard.
0% physical. I bought 1 game and 1 Starfield early access this year on Xbox. I bought an old Midway Arcade Compilation and that’s it. My Xbox is pretty much a Gamepass machine at this point. I think I bought around 35 games total this year across all platforms.
Almost 300 (may be 300 if we count collections as individual).
0% physical
50 to 100 . Non physical , more dlc to games ,I've gotten so much dlc now I can't keep up to what I own and what I dont , it's like a suprise everytime I run a game and see I've already gotten the dlc lol
I'm guessing somewhere between 30-50 (100% physical). My slow shift to PC continued this year as I bought more games there than xbox,ps, switch combined.
about 50. all digital... beat about half of them
I would buy physical games if my kids were older, but I really can't justify it. But I've probably bought about 8 or 10 games, this year. On Xbox, alone.
If Xbox thinks I'm going to buy games on top of overpriced GP Ulimate they're nuts. I bought 4 games this year all on PS5. I think we bought a couple Switch games for the kids too.
There is really no upside to buying physical copies of a game on Xbox or PlayStation anymore. You typically need to download lots of patches (sometimes large day 1 patches), then if you get dlc that isn't on disk, I guess you can resell the game, but it's value is often nothing by that point. The only system I'd buy hard copies on is the Switch since it saves space on the console and Nintendo resale value is typically quite good. Hell, I sold 3 Pokemon games and bought a used S-series with the trade in.
100+, not including DLCs, non-backwards 360 games, or the few instances where buying 1 game gave you others, like KI Definitive coming with KI Classic 1 & 2 or the ones that come with the Rare Replay.
More than I thought! - just checked and 16 games purchased. Only £46 ‘cash’ spent, the rest was Microsoft rewards. All digital.
I bought Halo Master Cheif Collection and Alan Wake remastred for Xbox this year. Hope to pick up some more games next year.
None, I've just stuck to GP. I've bought about 30 or so from the Windows Store on PC however...
This year on my Xbox I bought Phantom Liberty, Tony Hawk 1-2, Witcher 3, Baldurs Gate 3, Diablo IV and Starfield Constellation Edition (only physical purchase this year).
I’ve bought loads of physical OG Xbox and 360 games and a few Xbox One games. They are so cheap at the moment.
Three, all digital. D:OS 1 & 2 and the Castlevania Collection.
Normally I only buy games for my PS5. The Series X is my Game Pass machine. This year I bought the Starfield upgrade (because of the steelbook) and Dead Space Remake (because it was € 7,99) though.
Bought handful, played zero 😂😭
Bought Starfield, Skyrim, Fallout 4, Wildlands, Far Cry Primal, Far Cry 4, Division, Mad Max. All digital. Subscribed to GP for 3 months only.
I think I have bought Smile For Me, Strange Horticulture, Midnight Suns, and one other which eludes memory. Mostly play gamepass on xbox. I purchased more on Switch because I can get nintendo gift cards through a reward program where I work
Xbox One? Uh besides maybe confusing with 2022 as well Ride 2, Demon Turf (only physical copy, digital on other platforms, is an One/Series smart delivery game).
Crackdown 3, some 360 games (Force Unleashed 2, Prototype 2, Test Drive Unlimited 2, many more I just remember these 3 as more recent) some that are BC, some that aren't I know I did this year.
Still more PS2/PS4 games this year/last year, some PSP then Xbox I think. The odd Wii game not many.
Series console none.
All retro purchases I mean here from EB/Gamestop or a local retro game store. I know some Xbox/Microsoft published came out on Xbox and other platforms but I haven't touched them. I haven't played Hi Fi Rush digital via Gamepass like I trialed out Psychonauts 2. I don't have much interest in the rest. I WOULD HAVE Forza Motorsport 8 but it wasn't appealing to me from the marketing to the game design so I skipped it. I haven't Age of Empires, I haven't Minecraft Legends, Redfall I haven't either, Starfield I only cared to see the tech when a family member played and was like well that was disappointing. The rest is probably fine but tech wise nope. Not great space travel appeal.
I haven't really cared for much of anything from Microsoft this year or certain years. They just don't offer concepts/IPs/game design I'm looking for. So I look to OG Xbox/360 mostly.
Do I pick up the odd Xbox One games yes but mostly 360 games to put in my Xbox One/360 or if I don't see a PS4 copy I like to give the Xbox One some use besides it being mostly my Blu-ray player because it's silent unlike the PS3/4 and you need a PS5 for the silent setting after all. XD
But what Minecraft Dungeons maybe was the last I remember via Gamepass with a family member at least probably others but not memorable enough.
The fact JB Hifi one of my entertainment/applicance/tech stores had no Xbox section when I checked yesterday scared me, I thought they reduced the shelves or it was a different section but nope.
Either more digital or they really had little sales for them which isn't surprising but is annoying as I only buy physical for my Xbox so retro game stores only it is now even if I think I have a fair amount of first party, not as many second/third party exclusives or anything I had to research what most of them were and never heard of them/likely to see them or probably care for them I think, major games at least that were, oh course digital ones I'm not going for, and third party I just pick up what I see for either platform regardless.
Between Gamepass and PlayStation Extra I have too many games to play to think about buying something. Only games I purchased were on the switch because Nintendo doesn't offer a competitive service and that's why I've only played 2 Nintendo games all year.
Not absolutely sure but between Xbox OG, 360 and One/series I bought probably 30+ games this year with most of them physical copies for the collection (just yesterday I bought 8/9 games).
I try to play at least one GP per month in addition with other one from other systems or backlog on xbox
I’m a sucker for a good sale and that’s how I got 50+ this year. However can’t see getting too many more now that have a great backlog … but I have my eye out there for a couple of 2024 presents to me….
More than I thought actually. 23 games this year. And some are collections so I didn't count each individual game. Not bad at all and with gamepass, it could've been a bunch more.
I bought a metric butt ton of games...though all were heavily discounted and were steals.
@Serpentes420
I couldn't agree more, Game Pass is massively expensive at over $200 AUD per year to own nothing and have to rebuy the games you liked to replay them later. It only works for non-genre-specific players (play anything) but not for strict-genre-single-players like me.
About a dozen for Xbox. And the same for Ps5. Way more than I care to admit for switch and steam deck…
I haven’t bought an Xbox game since Forza 7 (preordered before Game Pass came out). I used to buy about 15-20 a year. But haven’t bought anything since Game Pass came out. It’s completely changed the way I use my Xbox.
Zero, gamepass gets me everything I need. I've bought dlc for a few games but as long as gp is going, highly unlikely to buy a full game
I bought most of the major games this year. Even the ones everyone else hates. I've thoroughly enjoyed Redfall and Starfield. I don't utilize gamepass. It has nothing that interests me that I haven't already owned.
@Serpentes420 For me GP is useless. It's got a tiny handful of decent games. And besides, you don't own those games. I'll stick to actually owning the games I play, thanks. If your subscription runs out and you can't renew it for whatever reason, then you now have no access to those games or if your Internet goes out. But I can still safely play any of my games offline and with no subscription needed.
I am PRO physical generally but on Xbox I realised I have bought 0% physical this year. I think that has a lot to do with Game Pass as usually I buy Day 1 physical and add games later digitally when on sale, but Game Pass negates that.
Additionally the Xbox disc usually contains the Xbox ONE version of the game, you have to download it all anyway which negates some of the disc advantage.
But I’m probably a slightly niche case, I buy most games physically on Swhich and buy all my day 1 games physically on PlayStation. I only buy digitally later when on sale.
Having a digital library is the only way to go ain't bought a physical disc game in a very long time
I bought around 20 games this year, and it's still some time left for browsing through the count down sale, so it might be a few more 😅.
Most of them are indie gems from Game Pass with the occasional heavily discounted AA/AAA, all adorably digital 😀.
About 10 for me which is lower than usual plus an additional 2 for ps, 2 for Switch and more on Steam (having just got a SD).
I've played so many games through Game Pass, that at first I thought it was zero games purchased. But then I realised, I did purchase Antstream Arcade, The Division 2 on a great sale, and regrettably I purchased early access for Starfield... all digital.
About 50/50 for me. I had to have MW3 physical (even got a sick steel book) but digital sales are so prolific these days.
0 games bought in 2023. My game time is limited so gamepass has more than enough for me to play. I'll be looking out for a huge sale on Avatar either physical or digital as kid's are really into avatar after our trip to Disney. Watching the second movie over the break so that might be something I'll actually buy.
I can't keep track — there's Xbox, Steam, Epic, Gog, Uplay, EA app, and Game Pass.
I know I have paid for several games this year. New and old.
None on xbox. I only play GP games on the series X and Ive let my gp lapse now.
2 on the switch, abiut 10 on ps5.
i was on a big buying spree this year, much of it physical. still have a bunch of games still shrink wrapped actually
6 games for me. Not bad as the majority of my playtime this year on xbox was on Starfield. Gamepass really does save me money overall.
I’ve bought quite a few indies and oldies. Of new games, I bought Hogwarts Legacy, Company of Heroes 3 (still unplayed, awaiting a ‘play a WW2 game mood’) and Baldur’s Gate 3. All digital.
Not a single one. My Xbox is exclusively a gamepass machine. I think I only bought 3 games total on it actually.
Bought Starfield for the early access, refunded it after an hour, decided early access wasn’t worth it. Played it on gamepass later and confirmed I hated it.
Other than that? Nothing. I prefer to buy games physically for switch and digitally for PC via Steam.
My last console was a PS3, so I had some content catching up to do! Even with GPU I was surprised I bought 27 games in the last year. Since I'm catching up it's good that I can get some good older games on sale and not be paying full price. Diablo IV was what I consider to be the only fully priced game I bought, I should have waited... I will probably add Hogwarts legacy soon, then slow down on the purchases to play the backlog of accumulated games.
Most of my game purchases this year was on Switch and Quest.
Gamepass did a lot of the heavily lifting on Xbox.
@HonestHick
It’s amazing people go on about physical and a massive 65% is no physical.
Purchased 2 new games on Xbox of course both third party as GP has the rest covered.
@OldGamer999 yeah physical is slowly but surely dying off. If the PS6 has a disk drive it will for sure be the last. I think MS is in the making of going all digital. Stores have already started shrinking physical media and Xbox being in 3rd in sales and having GP, they are seeing the biggest reduction of physical. Disc’s in stores.
Playing mostly Gears 5 multiplayer , I sometimes flick to Fallout 4 and less often now Skyrim.
I did buy the Dead Space and Alan Wake remake plus Alan Wake 2
all digital purchases.
Way too many. Even with Game Pass, I am still a sucker for sales. Probably purchased on average about 5 games per month. Oh the backlog…
@AshKirin19I can't really disagree with you. I got 2 years of GP with my Series S. Now that it is expiring, I'm done with GP. The plus side of GP though is it saves me from possibly spending money on the bad and mediocre games Bethesda put out this year and I played the good one at no additional cost.
