It's time for another round of Pick One! This week, to celebrate Far Cry 5 arriving on Xbox Game Pass, we thought we'd take a look back at the history of the series once again, which goes back almost two decades.
We did this poll back in May of last year, and Far Cry 3 was the winner by a long way, with Far Cry 5 and Far Cry 4 taking the second and third spots respectively.
Which of these titles is your favourite? Remember, you can only pick one!
Let's take a look at what we're working with:

Take the role of charter boat captain, Jack Carver, who finds himself hunted by an unrelenting team of highly trained mercenaries in this nature-gone-wrong FPS adventure. Far Cry 5 is my favourite so far, it’s one of my favourite games from the last generation. I love the setting, and the cult as the bad guys.
I've only played Far Cry 3 so that wins by default..
I picked 3 but really enjoy 5
Tempted to say 3 but the 'caveman simulator' was really refreshing, technology free and they even created an ancient dialect for it. Blood Dragon was a short but nostalgically sweet time too. 5 had promise but the cult thing played it a bit too safe considering the current insanity in the US. I'm sure Ubisoft were trying to stay away from politics as much as possible though, can't blame them, they might have been cancelled.
Primal hands down
I've been playing the Far Cry series in order the past couple of years. The first one was pretty good although it doesn't really showcase the identity that the franchise has established with the later entries. The Far Cry Instincts Predator games are literally the bane of my existence. I couldn't get past them for over a year because of how long, tedious and difficult they were. Far Cry 2 is the first game in the series that gave us a glimpse of what the series would become, but it felt way too linear and repetitive. Far Cry 3 pretty much perfected the formula right off the bat and it's the latest one I've played, so I'm voting for that one. Not to mention that it has the tropical setting that the first couple of games had, which makes it the one that truly represents the series in my eyes. I have no doubt that I'll like the games that came out after FC3, but they all lack the nice tropical setting that FC3 has. Because of that, I don't think my answer would change even if I'd play them.
That's actually why I'm so excited for Far Cry 6 since it takes place in a tropical setting once again.
FC5 hands down
Far Cry 2 for me. God knows it has its problems, but the setting, style and tone really did it for me. I know I'm in the minority, but I wasn't as keen on the direction the series took from Far Cry 3 onwards, although I have to say I'm liking the look of Far Cry 6.
Far Cry 2 wins for me. Like TimG13 says it did have it's problems, but I loved it. I think I've only ever finished 2 and 4 but have played all of them apart from New Dawn. Is Far Cry: Instincts available on Xbox through BC?
3, blood dragon, 1, 4, 5, Primal, New Dawn, 2, Instincts.
I think Far Cry Instincts: Predator was one of my first 1000gs on 360. That was a great game, having 2 campaigns.
Otherwise its hard to say since 3/4/5 are very similar. I still need to play Blood Dragon though. Maybe soon!
3 is still the best one. They just can't seem to find a way to surpass it, despite the other ones being all good/great tbf
Gawtdamn! That's a lot of farcry
I've only played 3 and 4 and went with the latter on the basis that I preferred the setting, however the actual gameplay and characters were better in 3. Also, 4 just felt like more of the same with no real innovations over it's predecessor. I get the impression that 3 set the formula for its successors, and certainly seems to be the most influential, so on that basis, I can understand why people would go for 3.
Voted for Blood Dragon. It’s simply my favorite Far Cry experience. It was different and unique and funny. 1, I never played, but 2 was good. I liked 3, thought 4 was more of the same, Primal was interesting but didn’t grab me, 5 started great but I just lost my interest in it a few hours in.
Blood Dragon by far, it's beautifully self conscious. Not too long like most ubisoft games, and just hilariously written. FC5 looked good but I disliked it alot, same old ubi formula. Couldn't get into fc2 because it looked horrible sadly.
Didn't even have to think about it, easily 3 by leaps and bounds.
The first game was amazing for it's time but it aged rather poorly, and all the spin-offs were mediocre. The second game was a real misstep with some terrible ideas and a dreary world, but the third game was lightning in a bottle. Blood Dragon was just a spin-off DLC/expansion for the most part, and 4 was okay but not nearly as fun as 3. 5 wasn't bad but it wasn't great, and New Dawn was just sort of a cringe DLC/expansion. Primal is different, it had it's moments, but not a top game for me.
Not really into the series personally but I am curious about 6.
Blood Dragon by far. I’ve played 2 to about half way through, but it’s so repetitive that I didn’t see the point of finishing it. 3 was great, but the drug factor just got dull very quickly (though I know it isn’t like they had an agenda) and the protagonist wasn’t particularly likeable. 4 was good fun, the grey morality involved in the story and it has a great bad guy. Likewise, 5 is fun to play and I liked the whole cult angle. I actually think that New Dawn is even better. However, Blood Dragon is just 6 hours of perfection. Spot on 80’s movie and cultural references, a really likeable badass protagonist (Michael ‘Hicks/Kyle Reece’ Bene), ridiculously overpowered weapons and a focused (though short) campaign. Add the brilliant 16 bit cut scenes, Dad joke-esque sense of humour and awesome soundtrack, it is the Xbox game I revisit time and time again (it was the first 360 game I collected all the achievements for). I only wish we had a proper sequel (the trials games was enjoyable but pointless) or some sort of physical release. Mark 4 style mutha-f****!
It was a toss up between Far Cry Instincts / Evolution / Predator and FC3 for me, in the end I opted for FCIEP as I remember really enjoying the enhancements you could get for the character and the more sci-fi feel of the games.
I intend to give FC5 another go as I played it in co-op and it just didn't feel right as a co-op game. I felt I missed elements of the story, and was rushed through the game because my mate didn't have the time to explore the game as I would have done.
Really looking forward to FC6 though, and hope that it too is not a co-op game...
Tough choice for me I loved both Blood Dragon and Primal but I have to go with Primal due to how creative it was with weapons since there were no guns.
FC3 has my favorite map to date and may be my favorite if it looked and played as well a FC5 does on my PS4 Pro. The FC3 port to the PS4 looks and plays worse than it does on my PS3.
With that said FC5 is the winner as it has my second favorite map to date, looks/plays great on my Pro, and has the fun Arcade mode.
I have played, on PS3/4, FC Classic, 2, 3, 4, Primal, 5, and New Dawn. FC2 is my least favorite and i have yet to finish one play through even though i purchased the week it was released. Lack of fast travel and guns breaking/jamming every other magazine just made playing more annoying than fun.
I’ve only played up to 4 with 4 being my favourite. Now 5’s on Gamepass I may jump back in.
Far Cry 4 has always been my favourite, refined a few things from 3, more things to do around the map and the himalayas levels were really good
Farcry Primal for me. I loved running around throwing spears at everything that moved.
I hope the next one is another oddball one like blood dragon or primal. I liked when they went every other with numbered games and the wild off shoots. New Dawn was just Far Cry 5.1, I wish it was a crazy different setting.
The formula still works for Far Cry but taking it to a completely different/unexpected setting did enough to mix it up. I would then be more excited for far cry 7 to return to normal where I need to take over some dictator run paradise.
Haven’t really enjoyed any since far cry 2. 3 was fun but 4 was awful
Far cry 4, I just like the setting and the fatigue of the series hadn't set in for me yet.
I couldn’t pick one. Have played most of them though. I probably enjoyed 3 & 5 the most, but I really liked Primal as well as it did something different (which reminds me I have to try it with the fps boost one day). Also liked 4 for the setting, and New Dawn for the way it took 5’s map and changed it.
When it comes to the next FC game they really need to introduce some NEW gameplay mechanics and start mixing things up.
I heard the jackal in farcry 2 is the protagonist from farcry. That's the stuff I like to see.
As for my favorite, itd have to be my first foray into the series, 3. I would like a farcry 2 remake, if they're reading.
I know I am the minority here, but Far Cry Primal was my favorite. I really liked the setting and weapons. It came at a time when I was burnt out on FPSs so the weapons made it alot of fun for me.
I bought 3, 4, 5, and Primal on sale a couple months back as I have friends that recommended them. I’m looking forward to giving them a go and based on the results of the poll, they seems to be some of the best.
I voted for the first Far Cry, it was ahead it’s time upon release. It stood out among the FPS genre with the freedom to roam the island while having spectacular graphics, I was in awe.
Far Cry 2 was in the worst in the series imo. The constant battle of keeping the malaria at bay and the constant checkpoints attacking you, no matter how many times you’ve wiped them out they just kept respawning, it absolutely done my nut in to the point where I barely even got through the first part of the game.
Far Cry Instincts Predator is still my fav. There's a tight group that still plays to this day.
Blood Dragon was my vote. I’ve never finished another far cry game until this one. And haven’t finished one since. BD was just the right kind of insane and just the right length.
3 was my favourite so far, though I really enjoyed the first ones I played, which were Evolution and Predator (so they would get my second vote).
The only one I have played in co-op was 5, which I did not particularly enjoy, mostly, I think, because I was rushed through the game by my friend who's time was limited. I wasn't particularly keen on the setting, either.
I have yet to play 5s sequel, or 6, despite owning both of them. I have a massive backlog of games, but hopefully will get to them at some point...
4 is still my favorite. Kyrat was such an awesome setting. Pagan Minn is only behind Vaas for best villain and he wasn't cast aside too early like Vaas unfortunately was. I also appreciated the choice between tradition and progression for the story.
3 was revolutionary, but 4 ironed out all the issues with it to perfection. It's a great series overall though. Far Cry and Assassins Creed are the two Ubisoft series I always come back for.
Wow I'm very surprised with how low 6 is at the moment although I didn't vote for it, I just figured it would have more as it's the newest entry. I played it and I have to admit I just wasn't wowed by it, I didn't enjoy the setting either. 5 is one I never played properly so I'll be playing that now it's on GP.
Far Cry Primal for me, I wish we could revisit the land of Oros again and feel the Wenja blood run through my veins again!!!
Primal. I just wish I could have played as a woman.
