This is total bullshit by WB Interactive - they will have known about the quality issue for months but because there was a bidding process for retailers to get exclusivity on a particular collectors edition, then WB are under legal obligation not to reveal the fact that they are withdrawing an edition from sale until the last minute, otherwise the retailer would lots of pre-orders to a rival
